When fit and able to start games consistently, you won't get much better defensively, even looking up towards the top half of the PL. But the fitness is always a nagging doubt. It will be very frustrating if he goes and plays 30+ games next season. We almost want him (not genuinely) to pick up some niggles to justify not pushing the boat out for him. Burnley feels a really anti climactic move looking from the outside but I guess you can't blame him.

Somewhat gutted on 06:31 - Jun 27 with 311 views | Churchman | He’s a very good player defensively. He has a real presence to him and looks comfortably a PL player. But fitness is more than a nagging doubt. It’s a real problem. He played in just over half the games last season and looking before that, his record is not the best on that front. It’s very much a fits and starts career. He’s not really settled anywhere and in danger of becoming a journeyman. I hope he settles down and has a full, injury free season. His talent and great attitude deserve that. He might, given Burnley possibly have better medical care and him living close to home n all that. Better money too, so it’s a logical move for him. For us, in a ham, egg and chips division like the Championship, we need week in week out players. A more settled team. We also need people here who want to be here. I know it’s a job to most players, but some buy in more than others - e.g. Chaplin, Hirst, Clarke. Axel wanted away back up north and that’s absolutely fine. Move on. I’d add that last year’s team took a real pasting. I’m against wholesale changes and like a settled team but after the debacle of the last six months we need a few changes to build another team, another mindset for the coming season. Agree totally. For me, Axel was useful but not a core player (unlike Burgess, whose move hurt me a little). However, it's clear that if we want to be more than a top 6 Championship side, we need a better defence and midfield. Wouldn't be surprised if we see 3 defenders and 3 midfielders arrive this season (both windows) in addition to another striker.
