Who is in control of the game with VAR? 14:40 - Aug 31 with 489 views | bsw72 | https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/ce93l9j0xk8o I notice that they have suspended the VAR official who was involved with the disallowed Fulham goal yesterday. How come there are no sanctions against the referee? I understood it that the referee was in final charge of all the decisions and the VAR can only refer the match day official to review, is that not the case? Surely the referee yesterday could have stuck to his original decision and not taken the advice of VAR after a review.

Who is in control of the game with VAR? on 15:01 - Aug 31 with 408 views | EastTownBlue | All that has happened is that the VAR official has been taken off VAR duties for this afternoon's match. The ref doesn't have an appointment so there is no match to remove from him. Yes, the ref does have the final say. Probably in a no win situation from having been sent to the screen.

I get the point about “only” being the removal of today’s appointment but my point was more that if VAR asks the referee to review and refs are hardly ever going against the VAR recommendation when it is either clearly wrong or 50/50 then surely the ref in the middle is no longer in control of the key decisions.

I think once he goes to the screen, if he's brave enough to stick to his decision, fans, players and media would celebrate/ accept that decision. The fact they don't think they can go against the VAR shows a real lack of awareness from the PGMOL again. They just don't get it.
