I watched Mexico v SA and it was mediocre.

At halftime there were feature length adverts cram packed with players / celebs.

It got on my nerves at the sheer naffness of it.
What's a balanced view as i'm of an age before pink boots

This probably sounds pretentious but it's what I thought watching that awful Nike ad which wasn't a patch on the airport 1998 one:

I subscribe to the view that we can no longer imagine a future. Pop culture has eaten itself - we're trapped in nostalgia and rebooting old franchises because we can't imagine a different world anymore.

The ads are an example. A sort of attempt to repeat things that worked before but with far less charm and ability. Like AI photocopying something. Everything is a facsimile. A copy of a copy of a copy. All cynically produced by huge corporations who are now extracting value from past freedoms, expression, individuality. Ironically the things they've destroyed.

The world cup is trading on the joy and glory of the 20th century world cups but we no longer believe in it really do we. I thought the Nike ad looked kind of...desperate!

Or maybe I'm just getting old and tetchy.

There is a lot of ad agency ego in play. I am not sure how impactful those types of ad are, but they are generally 'liked' when tested and the execs get to hob nob with famous people on set.

Mostly I don't mind them but struggle to recall the product they are advertising. Paddy Power would be a prime example. Its just Danny Dyer being Danny Dyer, its not immediately obvious who is paying him to be himself.

For clarity.

Was Mexico v SA mediocre or the adverts?

If the former, I fully agree, watched it, got bored, thought "there's nothing here of concern" then thought, "I hope the rest of the fixtures aren't like this", then thought, "How the hell are Mexico not 8-0 up?", then thought, "why the hell is he shooting from there?", (which answered the previous question, then thought, "that was just outside the area", then thought, "never a sending off", then thought, "never a sending off", then thought "that's the most ridiculous free kick routine I've ever seen", then thought, "Is the refreshment break just an excuse for America broadcasters to throw to adverts", then thought, "thank god that's over"

As for the ads. Didn't bother watching them.

I like to think that I'm the type of person that ads have no effect on whatsoever.

Rarely have I ever watched an advert and though, mmm must go an buy that product/use that service. Maybe I'm the wrong age, wrong demographic, or just not a good capitalist!

Hardly ever watch ITV channels, so can't comment even on what the ads were, but the sight of a few multi-millionaire players/celebrities trying to flog me overpriced Nike/Addidas gear would have had zero effect on me.

Didn't some American once state that it was your duty to watch TV ads because they pay for the programs, or something. Yeah, whatever....

I said to my Mrs what a joke all the ads were. Halftime they cut back to the studio,a few words from the presenter then back to ads,it was a real mess. That and that awful American female talking about sending off decisions, I mean who was she ? Was it needed ? In fact did any of them need to be out there if they are miles away from the game anyway ? Talk about a waste of money. Probably why so many ads to pay, Keane, Wright and Neville’s fees.

As well as the adverts being annoying , the 3 studio pundits were awful ,

I turned off before the 2nd half started
