Keane: Players Won't Play Again Comment Was Wrong
Keane: Players Won't Play Again Comment Was Wrong
Saturday, 12th Sep 2009 08:28

Town boss Roy Keane says he was wrong to reveal that he had told some of his players that they were unlikely to play for him again. Keane made the statement prior to the Peterborough Carling Cup tie, prompting a guessing game in the press.

Keane said: “I’ll admit I probably shouldn’t have said that, it came across the wrong way. The point I was trying to make was that I think I have given players a certain amount of chances.

“One or two miss out and obviously one or two people jumped the gun, talking about Jon Stead and Quinner and a load of nonsense was written about that.

“I do believe that there does come a point when you gave to say to a certain player that they’re not part of your plans, but unfortunately the media go off on tangents and mention names and all this carry on, which I think is a bit out of order really.

“Having said that, every day you come to training players have a chance to impress their manager. We had a practice game last week and the reserves had a game during the week, so there’s always an opportunity for players to stake their claim, but a lot of them don’t seem to take it. That’s what happens in football, that’s why players move clubs.”

The Town manager goes into today’s game believing that his side can gain their first league win of the season against one of the division’s current leading lights: “Middlesbrough are a good team and they’ll certainly be in the mix as well at the end of the season.

“I go into every match believing we can get a great result and hopefully that will never change, despite what’s gone on over the last five league games.

“The signs are there that we’re improving, as you’d expect, and we’ll be OK. People need to relax and trust the manager, the players and the staff that we’ll be fine come the end of the season.

Keane feels that his new signings and the loanees he hopes to bring in will add to his team’s goal threat: “I thought at the start of the season that scoring goals wouldn’t be too much of a problem to us, but we’ve come up short in that area, besides the bad goals we’ve given away as well.

“We’ve made it very hard for ourselves, but with these new players coming in and maybe with the addition of one or two loan players in the next week or two, I’m as confident as ever that we’ll be in the mix.”

Will he now admit he was wrong to come to ITFC?

Uefa. The way Marcus has responded to Keano's requirements tells me that he is very glad he came to ITFC.

Takes a big man 2 admit he was wrong. If Keano gets it right, will you be doin that at the end of the season 2 UEFA?!

If keano gets it right it will be a miracle and I will eat my hat. Everybody I speak to says he is the wrong man for the club and I have seen nothing (as yet) this season to make me think otherwise.

But, to answer your question, if things do come good and we get promotion or play-offs then I will be the first to admit that I judged him too harshly. Only time will tell, but I just can't get behind a manager who, imo, is so wrong for Town - to do so would be to betray a club I've supported for 26 years.

UEFA81 u are already betraying this club by being a divisive negative influence, part of the cancer that has crept into portman road over the last few years

I had a dream last night about ITFC. Roy Keane 's side lost the next two games and he was told to jog on. The press started speculating that it was obvious who was going to be manager, it would be the return of someone who had gone on to have relative success elsewhere. It was revelaed to be George Burley. What with everything thats happened in the last 2 years this fiction could even itself be a reality...

In the later parts of the dream Keane had returned to Sunderland to manage..

At the end of the dream Keane was raving in a massive Sunderland nightclub with strobes and fans around him. Gotta laugh at dreams.

It was a stupid thing to say and he made a rod for his own back.
It led to everyone guessing as to who he was talking about and now that it looks like it was the empty threats of a hot-head.
Comments like that should be said nose to nose in the dressing room - and stay there.
I really hope he can get it together for us, but I see a roller coaster of hope and desperation rather than the start of an era. I hope he proves me wrong.

I don't call it being negative, I call it being realistic.

That's a cool dream. I still dream of being Gus Uhlenbeek and us playing in that spraypaint kit again...

On a lesser note, no one should have expected a win today. Too many new players has removed everything he had worked for over the last few games. Back to square one I think (not League One you pesimists!)

Keane needs to calm down when speaking to the media. They are waiting for him to explode and by making stupid coments about players not playing etc...it just gives them fuel. When all said and done we are a small town club and i just don't know whether keane fits with us.
