Keane Refuses to Rule Out Move for Campbell
Keane Refuses to Rule Out Move for Campbell
Friday, 25th Sep 2009 10:40

Town boss Roy Keane isn’t ruling out making an attempt to lure ex-England central defender Sol Campbell to Portman Road. The former Arsenal and Spurs star sensationally quit Notts County earlier this week only a matter of days into a five-year contract with the League Two club.

Keane says that the Blues have made no progress on making loan signings this week but are continuing to look for additions to the squad and admitted that he could be interested in 35-year-old Campbell: “Maybe so. I’m sure Sol, if he can play, I don’t know the situation with his contract, will have plenty of options as he’s a good player, but we’ll see.”

The Town boss says Campbell was probably right to leave Notts County if he wasn't enjoying life in the lower leagues: “He’s had a bit of criticism over the last one or two days but I admire people who are brave enough to make a decision if it’s not working out. Trust me, there are a lot of players in different clubs up and down the country sitting on their contracts picking their wages.

“At least Sol was brave enough to say ‘listen, it's not happening’, and that’s got to be admired. Obviously you don’t want players breaking their contracts every week, but if it’s not working out and he’s not happy, like Notts County said themselves, you don’t want a player who’s unhappy.

Keane says he is as yet unaware whether Campbell is still officially a Notts County player and therefore able to go on loan to a Football League club or if his contract as been formally ended: “We don’t know the ins and outs of it because I had the same situation with my contract when I left United, I couldn’t sign for anyone until January, even though I was told different, but that’s another story.

“If his contract has been terminated then I don’t think he can play for anybody, but we’re interested in any player that’s out there and available and we think could come in and strengthen our squad. It’s a big if, it would be a long shot, no doubt.”

Keane says he hasn’t heard from any managers regarding his players since Tuesday’s reserve game, with Lincoln City caretaker-boss Simon Clark revealing his interest in two unnamed Town players yesterday.

The Blues boss says he would consider loan spells for youngsters such as Bermudian international winger Reggie Lambe, who scored a hat-trick in Tuesday’s game against Stevenage Borough: “Possibly so for people like Reggie. He’s a good young player. Reggie’s done well. Going out and getting some games in the real world is sometimes good experience for these players.

“We know there are always people watching these reserve matches and if someone makes the call, I’m very open-minded for our young players to go out and get some games.”

campbell would be a cracking signing, but unlikely.

This is a stupid story; if a premier league defender is out of contract, of course Ipswich are going to try and sign him. Reggie Lambe should go get some experience in the lower leagues and we should try and sign Sol - he'd shape Bruce into a brilliant defender.

sounds like every centre back we had had since Mogga left.

Get him in. He will be a good steadying influence.

exactly what i was just about to say.

"At least Sol was brave enough to say ‘listen, it's not happening', and that's got to be admired."

Not sure if i like that kind of mentality.
Still, in Keane we trust, hopefully first win of the season 2moro

RK has got our backing.

Sven-Göran Eriksson is else a manager that would have been very suitable for Town--like hand and glove in many respects.

Is anyone else who saw Mark Fish 'play' at QPR a few years back getting the same sinking feeling in their stomach?
Not so sure about this one, but I really can't see it happening either way, so...

would be a good signing for maybe a one or two year contract
he could certainly teach our lot a thing or two about defending at international level
he might be coming to the last few years of his career but i still think that he would be a good addition to the squad

He didn't look very slow when he sailed passed Danny Haynes 18 months ago.
However , this is not really a story - I am sure every manager will have been asked about Campell this morning and every one will have said similar to Roy.
I think he might be a little better than Mark Fish though Godblue.....

Would be a good signing I think, to be honest, any defenders to add to our numbers would be good!

Sol is a brittle character and an experienced defender so I think a 'pay per play' option would be the best option since he would be looking for big wages. Would be a good balance in our defense to the obvious inexperience we currently have. The heading the ball option would be a useful addition to our defenders.

Well anyone is better than McAuley

He might be old and slow - but he is a leader - which we desperately need at the back.

But could Ipwich really pay anyone £40K per week?

As I undersatnd it, we would only be able to loan Campbell if he was still under contract with Notts County. If he is not contracted to Notts County, no Club can sign him until Jan.

The reports were that his contract with Notts County had been cancelled, by mutual agreement. This is probably what Notts County would have wanted, so they don't have to keep paying him a wage. He was meant to be on 40K a week, but even it was only 20K, that would still be money that Notts County would be happy to save, bearing in mind he will not be playing for them.

In the circs, I suspect he is out of contract now, and probably not eligible for loan in any event.

Can anyone honestly see him actually coming here, if his reasons for leaving Notts County were to try and push for an international place. I'd love him to come here as I think he could do a job, thats if the right Sol Cambell comes here, not the one that turned up at Notts County. We was well thought of here in Portsmouth.

Blimey! Sol and Keane in the same dressing room? More demons than a Hieronymus Bosch triptych... we'd have to rename PR the "Garden of Earthly Delights".

Definitely worth a pop, if we can afford his wages. He'd be a much needed steadying influence at the back.

Worth a punt on a contract till the end of the season, not too sure bout his wage demands
