Keane: Finishing Let Us Down
Keane: Finishing Let Us Down
Tuesday, 20th Oct 2009 23:34

Boss Roy Keane said that bad finishing and good goalkeeping from Watford keeper Scott Loach were to blame for his side’s failure to beat the Hornets and the winless run stretching to 13 games. Watford manager Malky Mackay conceded that Town deserved to win.

Keane said: “Watford rode their luck and we were let down by bad finishing and good goalkeeping.

“But I've been in football long enough to know that if you don't take your chances it'll kick you in the teeth.

“We're not scoring enough goals. I can sit here and make excuses, but we've got to take our chances.

“Tonight we didn't, but I've got no problem with my team's performance, in terms of their spirit and workrate.

“We got the ball in the right areas and created chances, but when you don't get a second goal there are bound to be a few nerves.

"The players didn't deserve that. We started well, got the goal, Jon Walters hit the bar and we had some good chances to get that second goal, but when you are at the bottom of the league you can get a bit edgy at the end and we didn't see the game out.

"We should have won the game. Our keeper has hardly had a shot to save in the two matches he's been here, but we've ended up with just two points when we should have had six.

"I feel very disappointed for the players. They gave everything again and their keeper was the best player on the park.

"It's a massive test for us now but we have got to face up to it.

"Thirteen games without a win is a bad run. We can't get away from that and there's no hiding place.

“I can't fault my players and back them 100 per cent, but to go that many games without a victory is unacceptable.”

Hornets boss Malky Mackay admitted his side were second best: "Ipswich deserved to win. We were below par and most definitely got out of jail. If I'm honest, I couldn't see a goal coming.

"We kept going and going and were still fighting, which I expect, but it didn't look like we would create an equaliser.

"But when there are five or 10 minutes left in any game you've always got a chance - you've just got to keep pushing.

"It was great we got the goal and a point and we showed a real resilience and never-say-die attitude.

"This is a tough league and it's a real scrap and battle. A lot of teams are showing real resilience and I'm glad it was us tonight."

If we win just over half of our remaining games 17 and draw another 8 we will have the same points as last seasons awful year!!! ,this should be easily achievable given the right selection ,Wright is at last back in and looking great as is the defence ,now get Garvan in for Trotter as he has goals in him and give Stead a run he is a proven scorer at this level and the premiership and would have relished the amount of chances we created last night .Then we have Norris and Civelli to return which will be a welcome boost like a new signing and things will look good

Ah, thanks for explaining that Dobbie, I was wondering what was going on ;)

Certainly if we play like that on Saturday the Green Army don't stand a chance, all we need is a bit of luck for a change.

And on another unrelated topic, what is the point of playing 'My Way' twenty minutes before the match when no-one is there? If you're going to do it, play it just before the teams come out so everyone can have a sing. Just a thought.

'all we need is a striker' Keane had all pre season to sign one - wasted 1.7m on priskin.
HAd all of pre season to sign a centre back.

KEANE OUT

Keane said it all 'We're not scoring enough goals'
So why did you sell Rhodes before you got an able replacement in then, Roy?
I rest my case, Keane should go now!

Great game, shame about the result and shame about the shambles of a referee too - luck was not on our side. Little has been said about the new GK thought his distribution was fantastic - no kick and hopes up field and he didnt always pick out Walters either - nearly even scored with one of his long shots! Maybe he has helped give the defence more confidence or maybe its David Wrights return, never should have been dropped. Still at least Keane is man enough to admit his mistake in Donkey Delanney and has brought back Wrighty who last night proved he is the man for the job even if he is naturally a right back! Keanes signings..... two sunderland lads top drawer, GK - great, Roisenar quality. Prisken - needs time and is a poacher with all those balls going in last night im sure he would have been on scoresheet, Lee Martin the jury is out there, really think he could be a brilliant player but is definately rough around the edges at the moment and it is not quite working for him. All in all a good game, a good squad and i think things are on the way up... coyb.

same here i went last night well i have been to all the home games but yes last night was a 1000% inprovemnet on the first few games, as it didnt take 30 mins to get a shot at goal for a start.

the boys for once were up for it from the word go and dint give up untill the last 30 secs so you cant slate the guys.

how ever i would still like to see the playes spread out better across midfield as they are still crammed to gether to much, this way you will force the oppostion to do the same and it will been better passing and greater time of the ball.

i must admit i was miffed when he took of martin and replaced with peters, to me at the moment peters is ok running forward but lacks a good touch to turn a player and put in a good cross, i know he was out of postion, thats why it would have been better for martin to saty on the field unless he had a knock of course.

i hope walters will be fit because we will need him althought this may give pristkin a good run out, as it think in the end he will link up well with paplo, as pabs is the best we have for holding a ball and turning the defenders on there arse.

but i agree about trotter i think at the moment either colbeck or garvin will be better suited how ever liam does get stuck in and not afraid toi tackle unlike some on the pitch.

david wright was awsome for the last two games and mac and tom done a good job to except for the minor mistake of the last 30 secs!!!.

so things are looking better how ever sat will tell weather it was the fact that watford let us play better or we manged it ourselves i know it may sound stupid but thats the fact i feel, so we will see so lets kick the pilgrims greeennnnn army to touch and get 3 points.

Norris and Civelli return will be key around Christmas, it's the lack of Exec's ability to land the Loanees Keane has asked for that's going to cost us points we need to push on.

Desire, bucket loads last night and mostly from the new guys! Keeping the Big G has to be a must [he's come good quicker than last year lol]

Agree we need to convert more chances but not sure if giving a run to the likes of Stead or shipping out and splashing out wouldn't be better having already taken a turn left into Sh*t Creak!

ok we only drew again last night but the perfomance was good (against the worst team we have seen here this season) i would have gone with conner and priskin second half, i think they need to get together and form a partnership but this is going to take time, time we are running out of, forget getting out of plymouth it ain't going to happen, another break then all guns firing for derby

poor finishing let us down, give priskin a run in the side then in place of walters along side counago, i like walters but we tend to play long to him to often without him in the side we can play it on the ground thru counago,
defensively as a unit we have been much betta last few games and with counago priskin up front we will starting scoring the goals to climb up the league starting sat 4-2 town COYB

Pickles, Blue army DObbie73 and the rest none of you can handle the truth and instead aim your anger at me - someone who live in the real world! Yeah we played better but sti lcould only score once - ho's fault is that the manager for selling our best striker and signing sh*t replacements.
Your all little boys whpo need to grow up!

Little boys? I see that most of the people you've listed have written well worder critiques that do admit failings - you just seem to write sensationalist short paragraphs (normally exactly the same as your previous statement) followed by a shout of 'KEANE OUT' that thankfully echoes in to the nothingness. I'll respect a well argued point even if it goes against my opinion, but you'll get no respect from me if you throw toys out of prams.

callumgarryskeemer, ive criticised keane quite alot, but last night was our best performance in months surely its something to build upon, and many positives to take out of the game, and your really getting annoying now, you sound like someone from primary school, its ok having an opinion but when we play well we need to encourage more and keep supporting and pushing the team on not this continuous slating that i always seem to read when you post

callumgarryskeemer you are clearly just on here to criticise and start arguments with people. We played really well last night and did not deserve to conceed like we did, ok we didnt score loads of goals but we played the best football weve played in ages and created alot of chances, lots of positives to take from the game, like tommyblue said it is ok to have an opinion but you need to get behind the team and not slate them. callumgarryskeemer i bet you left 2 seconds after we conceeded last night or better than that didnt even attend......

Coulb be a long one here, so bare with me...

1st of all, let me tell you my status as a town fan. 24 years old, fan for 20 years, live in Yeovil, don't get to many games because of finances, work commitments, travel, etc, just so you know how i stand.

Last night was the most heart breaking night as a fan in my life. More so than the united 9-0, more so than the last day 5-0 at Liverpool which caused relegation, more so than any play-off losses. Some may say thats a bit OTT, but this is a painful situation. Batter a team for 90 minutes, come away with what feels like a defeat, crowd giving a solid account of themselves for 90 minutes too.
Then it goes horribly wrong.

For those 90 minutes of decent atmos mean nothing to me now, as, to my disgust whilst listening to the Ipswich player as I always do just so I can keep track of town in anyway possible, the sound of the mindless few who booed at the end destroyed the night. As some said, the players showed that they were devastated. The last thing that was needed was some idiots making them feel like they didn't deserve anything at all!

13 games is a long time to go without a win, i agree, and the longer you go the harder it gets but this isn't helped when people turn on their own.

Lady luck's being a bit of a tart as well in all fairness, judging on listening to the games since MIddlesborough, our performances might have merited 14 points at the most.

So does Keane go? If he does who the hell wants to come in mid season to a team who are bottom of the league? They won't have looked at performances, they will just see our position.

If Keane goes we might as well write to the FA and ask to be placed in league 1 now. The games are getting better and we are now playing well, many are even starting to get on Keane's side.

Not having a go at anyone in particular here, but some fans need to grow up big style!!!

I am certainly not in favour of sacking Keane but he does not help himself by selecting Trotter and Peters. Trotter is simply non effective and I wonder sometimes if Peters actually knows the game as his positional sense in woeful. Replace these two players and get a goalscorer and we'll be fine - I hope. Saturday will not be a foregone conclusion. Football is such a cruel game but then I've seen it so many times before - it becomes harder as we are rock bottom.

oh and callumgarryskeemer if you are referring to selling our "best striker" as Jordan Rhodes, just get over it!! at the end of the day the club accepted a really good offer for him, he didnt have to accept huddersfields terms, he couldve stayed but HE chose to go

Agree with most, was the best performance of the season (apart from the finishing) but will need to play like this in the next few games to make it meaningful. Although am confident we will get out of our current position am starting to worry slowly game by game - too many late goals are crippling us!
Other worry is looking above Reading in 21st there is a 7pt gap between us, so we need a run of a few games to get ourselves well and truly away from danger.

Think its definately time for Trotter to give way, surprised how Keane has rotated many other positions yet Trotter who in my view has underperformed for the last 4-5 games is still a 90min player each game. Thought as Keano was a midfield maestro he might have picked up on this! Give Garvan a chance I say!!!

orbell18 added 14:07 - Oct 21
I'm sorry but anybody who says Keane out after that game should take a long hard look a themselves and think, 'my existence is meaningless'. We played 85 minutes of birlliant football, better than any game i saw last season under dim. the only possible criticism was trotter who i think is very lazy, but still garvan is not the answer. he has been consistently poor for the time he has played this season and wasn't particularly marvelous last season either. David Wright earned his place in the team through dedication and hard work, if Garvan's ego doesn't permit that then I don't think he should play! Anyaways Colback is far mor composed and devoted to this club and he is on loan!

That said, COYB!!! absolutely brilliant display on Tuesday.... Keept it up!

gutted by the result but delighted with the performance. it shows they are motivated by and wont to play for Roy Keane. keeping it going will see results improve i'm sure(i hope). Plymouth game is first 1 in a while where our opponents are not on the back of a good result and therefore not on a high confidence wise. we can use that to our advantage. we really do need a performance saturday though!

Kept low so far, im not a keane man ,but last night if ever we deserved to win that was it. Murhen l f ,we need more than a winning run now,we need all the others down at bottom to lose too, dont kid yourself .Paddypowle, Priskin has done F A so why not play C W , Priskin is paid to do a job , he hasnt performed,as much as i dont like to see Wickham shoulder the responsibility of saving Town, i wont knock Keane for playing him at moment, Priskin is a flop, if he was half the striker he was suppose to be we wouldnt need to be debating Wickhams place ,
