Walters: I've Come Up Short
Walters: I've Come Up Short
Thursday, 25th Mar 2010 08:58

Skipper Jon Walters has admitted that he has not been at his best this season and says the Blues still have work to do to avoid relegation. Walters was made skipper of Roy Keane’s side in October but has rarely been at his best either when playing in midfield or up front.

Walters said: “I've not had the best of seasons as typified when I missed a first half header on Tuesday. If that had gone in - and I was well placed - it would have made a big difference.

“Without a shadow of doubt I have come up short and although I've scored six goals it should have been a lot more.

“I've played a few different roles and as captain I've adopted a different approach at times, but that's no excuse for being under par.”

Walters feels that the summer could see significant changes at Portman Road: “The manager and the whole staff will have to take stock now and at the end of the season and see where we are.

“Players that are currently here on loan may not be available next season and there may be some clearing out to do.”

But before then, the club captain says there is more immediate work to be done: “We mustn't kid ourselves, we're still fighting for our lives to stay in the Championship.”

If Walters himself is saying that he's not playing well then surely Ray will drop him this weekend.

Maybe not though!

He will never be dropped because he runs, not fast but all game and tries very hard.

Which is great if you don't want a striker or a winger to scores goals or make crosses.

I would never drop Walters or Norris as their workrate is second to none. I agree Walters has not been at his best but his heart is with the Club unlike some others I could mention. We need characters from now until the end of the season and these two should play every time. More doom and gloom after last nights results it is going to be a close call - perish the thought of this Club going down - it beggars disbelief after the hype of the pre season but make no mistake there is a real possibility we will replace the budgies. I'd get the rope now but now leaving for a weekend in Swansea

Keane will never drop him because he always gives 100% but sometimes i think when a player gives that much effort they need a rest. There is nothing to play for this season, so keane should just give him a break for a couple of weeks.

Was set next to him in the cinema last night watching Shutter Island, maybe he should have gone to the earlier show for a proper rest.

I was in the cinema last week when he was there.

Wednesday night is obviously cinema night for Mr Walters.

Orange wednesdays?

I think Walters might benefit from not being captain and just concentrating on his own game. We've got a few experienced players who should be helping to lead the side, but still no stand out big character for me. We desperately need someone in who will do the armband justice.

I agree he's not been at his best this season but consider how much he's been messed about. "Right wing last week, up front today, then left wing next week Jon". How can a player find consistency in that environment?

I don't think Walters has been poor. He's been below par, below where he has been in the past for us. But he puts in a huge amount of work and effort. And still delivers more than many of his team-mates, even when he's off form. He'd be first on my teamsheet every match.

Dont beat yourself up too much JW. There are plenty of others less honest than you who have failed the badge. The manager, the whole team for the vast majority of the season but also 18000 Ipswich Town fans who are the ones who are supposed to create the atmosphere in the stadium.Dont forget we are supposed to be the ones supporting the team, why all of a sudden do we rely on the team to produce something before we open our mouths.what has happened to our crowd lifting the team.I have surported ITFC since 1961 and seen all sorts of town teams come and go,good and bad ,managers the same, good and bad .But we always had a tradition for being a noisy set of supporters who could lift the team .People seem to think that if they whinge it makes them passionate and a true ITFC fan.You are bringing the club down as much as the manager and the team.Get your own house in order and raise the rafters at PR and just maybe we might get what we all long for ,a successful Ipswich Town.Remember,we have no devine right to be in the Premier league, there are 92 fottball clubs who think they should be and 50 odd teams who would love to be in our position. We are no longer a top European club, get over it and pull together and we can try to create some new history for this club which will be great again.I am not one of those fans who see positives in everything around me,but i am a realist and understand that a club this size will have its share of tough times. We are in one at the moment lets get together and lift the boys in blue back up where we all think they belong

dboysips - i agree with everything you say, for me the the atmosphere at home games is embarrassing, im a season ticket holder in the lower North Stand and on tuesday night all i could here was people talking amongst themselves whining and moaning, 2 guys were trying to get a song started and nobody joined in, i think the support the last couple of seasons has been dreadful and alot of the time the team needs to hear the fans getting behind them, im starting to think they need to start playing crowd atmosphere over the PA during games to get some atmosphere in the ground, we know things are tough at the moment but we still need to show support for the team even when things are at their worst!!!

on the actual article - i thik Walters needs a rest, hasnt looked the same player for ages and looked off the pace tuesday, i know we dont really want to drop our better players at this stage but he idnt performing it maybe time just to give him a chance to recharge

COYB lets secure Championship football for next season, i dont want to see Yeovil playing here in 2011!!

REST, whats all this rest rubbish, I bloody wish I could work for just 3 hrs a week or sometimes 1.5hrs aimlessly kicking a bag of wind around and get paid 10-15000 a week, I'd well happy.
OK a bit harsh I know, but jeeees, get real.
Kevin beattie would have ran all week just so he could wear the shirt.
