Walters: I've Come Up Short
Walters: I've Come Up Short
Thursday, 25th Mar 2010 08:58

Skipper Jon Walters has admitted that he has not been at his best this season and says the Blues still have work to do to avoid relegation. Walters was made skipper of Roy Keane’s side in October but has rarely been at his best either when playing in midfield or up front.

Walters said: “I've not had the best of seasons as typified when I missed a first half header on Tuesday. If that had gone in - and I was well placed - it would have made a big difference.

“Without a shadow of doubt I have come up short and although I've scored six goals it should have been a lot more.

“I've played a few different roles and as captain I've adopted a different approach at times, but that's no excuse for being under par.”

Walters feels that the summer could see significant changes at Portman Road: “The manager and the whole staff will have to take stock now and at the end of the season and see where we are.

“Players that are currently here on loan may not be available next season and there may be some clearing out to do.”

But before then, the club captain says there is more immediate work to be done: “We mustn't kid ourselves, we're still fighting for our lives to stay in the Championship.”

Jay, I'm a little worried at how jealous you are of someone sitting next to Walters at the cinema and what his favourite foods are!?

Walters needs a rest for sure, not been his best all season, and he looks knackered at times.

Couldn't agree more with others, the season is almost over for us anyway, so lets rest some of the players that deserve it.

Walters has looked a little jaded recently, and would probably benefit from a couple of weeks' rest. Although far below his peak a couple of seasons back, he is still a battler that works very hard and wins balls in the air and he has not been too bad this season. He has been played all over the place in an ever-changing team, and maybe the captain's armband hasn't helped him.

If Walters has come up short, how could we describe the performances of the new wide men that Keane has brought in: Martin and Edwards? These two cost around ten times what we paid for Walters.

As for the crowd, I agree it has been quiet but on the other hand it has not turned on the team or the manager (surprisingly) at a time when the football has been awful. The club could do more to help the atmosphere by reducing match day ticket prices and getting the empty seats filled.

The last thing we want is another "short" midfielder, with Norris doing his Ernie Wise impersonation and Leadbitter showing all the signs of "short man syndrome"!

Yes he has looked jaded of late and he has'nt had the best of seasons. So if Roy leaves him out who comes in to replace him? What are the better options? Edwards has hardly shone on the occasions he has played. Lee Martin could play there...but then who is Lee Martin? Peters maybe? Today the Emergency Loan window closes I believe....who could we get in thats any better than what we already have?

For those asking about Jon's cinema routine, he wasn't eating anything actually he just had a bottle of water with him. He was with his missus, who I can say is rather attractive.

Walters has, by his own standards been poor the last few weeks, yes he is running throughout the match, but often seems like he is running through treacle.
Definitely could do with being dropped or rested with perhaps Peters being given a go at right mid at Swansea

That's one of the biggest understatement of the year so far! He's been shocking - a real weak link. You can not fault his effort or work rate which is always very good - but is that enough? As a midfielder he has no width, pace, skill or ability. He creates nothing. As a striker he can't score. I am afraid if we are to progress Walters will have to be dropped. In fairness he was poor last season also.

He has been below par but i still rate more highly than Lee Evans Martin and Carlos Santana Edwards
Bring in Peters and we will be the Hobbits vs the Swans

Not sure that Walters should have been made captain, I would have had Leadbitter or Norris (and yes I am aware that Norris was out at the time of JW's appointment) Maybe he needs a rest, he is a good player and works hard. I'd like to see Peters come in for him in the next game, inject a bit of pace down the right (as the only other pacey winger we have is Edwards who also has come up short this season too) but maybe the burden of being captain has affected his performances too.

Walters has been poor this year, tries and works hard, but doesn't score or make goalscoring chances but has all of Keanes plaudits. David Wright should have been made Captain...but he doesn't seem Keanes 'cup of tea'.
I was a fan, but I am fed up with him living in the past, discarding our youth for Sunderland has beens.
