Speculation on Keane's Future Grows
Speculation on Keane's Future Grows
Saturday, 27th Mar 2010 07:13

Roy Keane’s tenure as Town manager is close to coming to an end, according to widespread reports this morning. Alan Curbishley, spotted at Town’s recent games against Cardiff and at Watford, is said to be the man being lined up as his replacement.

According to one report, Keane’s relationship with owner Marcus Evans has broken down and they only communicate through chief executive Simon Clegg, a claim which may stem from the Town manager himself saying that he rarely talks to Evans last week: “We don’t speak on a week to week basis, which suits me, I’m not a great one for talking. It suits the owner, obviously I know he goes to the games and we have a chief executive here.”

The Town boss is also said to have fallen out with his squad, about whom he has been highly critical in recent weeks with a major turnaround in playing staff likely in the summer if Keane remains at Portman Road.

Regardless of the truth of today’s claim regarding Evans, the owner is unlikely to be happy with the current situation having given Keane significant funds to make a promotion push and with Town still far nearer the relegation places than the top six and currently showing few signs of pushing on.

Last season, Evans waited until Jim Magilton’s side had no chance of the play-offs before dismissing the Northern Irishman, giving Keane the final couple of games to access the existing squad. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Town owner and chairman chose to make a similar move this time around once the Blues’ Championship status was assured. One paper today claims he could make the decision even before that is the case.

Curbishley and his Charlton and West Ham assistant Mervyn Day were spotted watching the home win against Cardiff and the away defeat to Watford. Day was reportedly on scouting duty for Fulham, but the pair are now available for work after Curbishley won his case for constructive dismissal by West Ham and were strongly linked with Town this time last year.

Meanwhile, Keane's name continues to be linked with the Celtic manager's job vacated by Tony Mowbray on Thursday.

Elsewhere, reports in Ireland are linking the Blues with 21-year-old striker Ciarán Kilduff, who currently plays in the League of Ireland with UCD. The 6ft 3in tall former Shamrock Rovers trainee is rated as one of the top youngsters playing in Ireland at present.

I hope Roy stays - UNLESS of course Curbishley is lined up to taKe over. However, how on earth can the national press know that ME is running out of patience with Roy when he doesn't even speak to the local press?

jas0999 As usual the press have put two & two together and got it wrong again, as you state Marcus does not speak to the local media. The national press are probably unaware of this fact, they are used to dealing with press hungry owners (one self publicising cook comes to mind), so when they hear RK state he doesn't talk to the owner much they read more into it than there really is.
Then the Roy out brigade use this as another opportunity to vent their spleen.
It can be quite entertaining reading their thoughts, most of whom, when RK got the job and then we won the last two games of the season, thought he was the new messiah. Now they will probably all say they didn't think this and they knew all along he would fail

Can't believe there were a minority there today chanting "keano"...what are these supporters watching?!..I don't mind it when the manager's doing a good job but Keane & his coaching staff are providing us with dross..honestly,it was abysmal & embarrassing..we barely put 3 passes together..kept sticking 2 people on corners (none of which got into the penalty area - just cross the damn ball in first time)..Leadbitter spent most of the game arguing with Keane..we should be chanting "ipswich" not bloody "keano"...we're Ipswich Town FC - NOT Roy Keane FC....thank god swansea had an off day.

Marcus Evans please bring and end to this rubbish.

CLUB COME OUT IN SUPPORT NOW! KEANO MUST STAY. (Unless Burley's coming home)

He's right, this club is too nicey. That's a euphemism for pathetic. Get some balls and stick with this man. My football club is supported by some of the most negative, boring people in England.

He has a two year contract. Fulfill.

Unless Burley is lined up, leave him be.

OK then, fine Yorkshire. I will prove the comments about being way over budget, seeing as how I'm talking to someone who not only can't add and subtract, but who seems to have a goldfish memory and can't recall who's been transferred in and out of the club for the past two and a half seasons, and also seems totally incapable of using google to find the answer himself.

When Evans took oer the club he invested £44 million (£32 million of which was to cover the club's debts. Of course the club is still technically in debt, just to Evans in stead of the bank, but that's for a different discussion). Thus meaning that £12 million was put into investing in the squad.

Now since the takeover, we have had a transfer deficit of £13.3

If you want a source for that then go here http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/en/verein/677/ipswich-town/transfers/alle.html.

Now which number is bigger? The £12 million originally put into the club or the £13.3 million spent on transfers? Now also bear in mind that this is JUST TRANSFERS. You also have to pay these players money and some of them demand to be given quite a lot of it, particulary those who were signed from Premiership clubs who are used to being paid premiership wages. With the wages at the level they are at currently, Evans has to keep pumping money into the club EVEN IF WE DON'T SIGN ANY NEW PLAYERS. Even BEFORE Keane made his signings, the club was operating at a £10 million loss for the previous year -with 'only' £6.3 million being down to Jim's signings, meaning that £4 million is bleeding out of the club per year, a figure that is no doubt much higher now that Keane has signed premiership players. Have a look at this:

http://www.eveningstar.co.uk/content/eveningstar/news/story.aspx?brand=ESTOnline

Add to this the fact that corporate hospitality (Evans' company's sector) took a pretty big hit in the recession, and you have to come to the realisation that he probably doesn't want to continue spending big every transfer window and would probably prefer to slash the wage bill considerably so he doesn't have to keep putting even more cash into the club.

So, do you still think I'm just making up the fact that we're over our budget? Do people seriously still believe that the magical money fairy will come wave his wand and conjur up £millions more to finance another total overhaul of the team?

No. You're living in a fantasy world.

If you want to show faith with the manager (and there's nothing particularly wrong with that in its own right) then you're essentially either saying that THIS team AS IT IS RIGHT NOW (maybe with one or two cheap signings) HAS to be good enough to go up next year (not to get close, close doesn't pay the bills. We need promotion). OR you're saying that Keane is the right man to work at building a financially viable team from scratch after the money men force us to cut our losses on this 'project' and sell all the high-earning players that we can't afford. Now Keane MIGHT be the right man for this. Who's to say? My point was that this level of spending simply cannot continue and that everybody needs to get a much better sense of perspective.

Incidently, my season ticket renewal for is filled out and sent in already. So no matter how gloomy that huge wall of text must seem, I will remain a supporter through thick and thin. COYB.

I think from the comments on here it's fairly conclusive. Most of us want Keane to succeed but it's not going to happen here, most of us have given him a fair crack of the whip, but never have i booed an ipswich side off the park until the watford game the other week. Moga, curbs...up you step. Great squad, now make them play.

Don't believe ANYTHING your read in the media. If they don't have a story they make it up. Curbishley is out of work after all. That does not suggest that he is a winner despite a number of posters who are calling for him to be the next ITFC manager.

Keep at it Keano, next season is looking good.

I think Keane`s backroom staff are a big problem. They are not good enough. He loves them and TRUSTS them but they just are not experienced enough to get us to a better level than magilton managed.
Because he doesnt trust anyone else ( including most players, hence always buying/loaning sunderland players) he is left a bit high and dry.

I think he can succeed but he needs better staff.

just look at the woeful free kicks corners , set piece headers from our defenders etc etc , what do they do at the training ground ? Ive watched and not alot of set piece stuff and it shows.

totally agree with Washbrook and Vermund, ....jas0999 and putyabootson, you both go on about us wanting someone else in,then say you want Keane to stay ''UNLESS''. so deep down, like us, you are not convinced that Keane is the man for the job !

A lot depends on how much more money Marcus Evans wants to pour into the club this summer. If he does, he risks pouring away more of his cash. If he does not, the club will not get promoted and he won't make any money from the Premier League.

Supposing Evans puts in a few more millions in the summer. Is Keane the man to spend it? He has blow millions on Martin, Priskin and Edwards this season so what for next year? He doesn't seem to look beyond Sunderland for most signings, but surely this avenue is now used up.

Supposing Evans does not more in more money in the summer. Is Keane the man to wheel and deal to turn the current squad into a promotion team? He has no record of working without money and I cannot see the current squad improving under him.

So, the above to me points to a new man coming in. Look on the bright side, if Evans brings someone else in and gives him a decent transfer budget that is a sign of his continued commitment to ITFC and belief in our future promotion!

Also, I have to say that I'm REALLY sorry to anyone not involved in my little squabble with Yorkshire about that ridiculously long, boring, and depressing post. I'm normally a nice, happy person. Honest.

I just want the torture that has been this season, to stop. I'm afraid I just cannot see RK doing that. The main positive about him coming to PR was supposed to have been his ability to attract really good players ....hmmm..the very thing that's been at the root of our problems this season.

Him going and Curbs coming in would be a relief - at least Curbs knows what he's doing and will be able to attract decent signings + get us playing attractive footie again. Not the ideal person, but we're never gonna get that in our current predicament, and frankly, I think we'd be lucky to get Curbs - I think he'd do a similar job to that which Joe Royle did.

PS Thanks Washbrookblue and Naa for saying it for me, thereby saving me hours of typing. As for Whadzilla, Yorkshire and couple of others, it really is depressing to see people who are still wearing blindfolds and sticking their heads ever further into the sand just to make sure they don't actually see what's really going on.

What is it with Keane that there are still some myopic supporters who still back the man ! Just because he is "tough" does NOT make him a good manager as the results and the constant team changes prove . Let's get a manger who can manage and bring pride and stability back to ITFC

blueherts added 22:07 - Mar 27
keane is NOT A MANAGER AND NEVER WILL BE

IF Celtic want him , which I very much doubt, have him

No people skills , no management skills

Yes he has lost the players - no respect

Get him out before he does more damage to our club

Marcus evans has done the right thing staying with keane there is no point in chopping and changing all the time or we will end up like QPR or even like norwich if things get really bad.

So we all had 'Magilton Out' now its 'keane out' ... what's its going to be next ... 'Curbs/Mowbray out' !!
If we sake keane and bring it say curbs/mowbray then we dont start the seasn well again ..people wont give them time if you cant give Keane time when hestill has over a year left on his contract.
May i just say the contract stated .. Win promotion within 2 years !!
We havn't even finished the 1st one yet and people want him out !
We will go no where if we continually sack managers !!!!

Everyone knows that continuity is best but there comes a point where it is plain for all to see that the man in charge is damaging the club - as has been written here by others , Keane has NO people skills ( I would have thought a must in this job ) and the poor results ( far worse than Magilton's ) are there for all to see. If he were to be given another year, all he would do is fall out with a few more players and send them on their way- he would try to bring in more loan players ( it would be hard as not many would relish playing for him ) and shuffle the team around on a weekly basis ! Keane must go for the club to have a chance to become settled under a reliable and level-headed manager!
