Murphy: We Want to Play More Attractive Football
Murphy: We Want to Play More Attractive Football
Monday, 19th Apr 2010 09:47

Keeper Brian Murphy says Town would prefer to play more attractive football but that the battle to avoid relegation has meant a less pretty approach has been required this season. The Irishman was speaking having made it to Saturday’s game despite being stranded in Ireland by the cancellation of flights due to the Icelandic volcano.

Murphy said: “We want to play attractive football, but we’ve been at the wrong end of the table for that. We’ve had to dig in, work hard and graft in order to get the club going in the right direction.”

The 26-year-old says he only expected to be in Ireland for a day: “I went home on Tuesday after training. It was for personal reasons, to attend to a family matter. We had a day off on Wednesday and I was due to fly back that night.

"But with all flights cancelled I had to book the ferry and it was Thursday night before I was back in Ipswich."

Murphy refused to reveal whether he had been fined by manager Roy Keane: "I'd rather not say - that's between me and the manager."

Meanwhile, Town groundsman Alan Ferguson is due to be part of a delegation from the Institute of Groundsmanship (IOG) meeting with the FA and the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) today to discuss the Wembley pitch.

Ferguson was set to look at the troublesome current Wembley surface and give the FA and the STRI — who maintain the pitch — the benefit of his experience but it has been torn up prior to his visit.

totally agree which is why i'll leave it till next season before i join in with boos and keane out stuff.

I personally, think he might be succesful, my fear is that if Evans does say you have 1 season - then he will panic buy and play the same football all next season, then yes i will say keane go

Thing is, ME has said he's only got one year. I doubt he's going to extend his contract after this season!

So he almost certainly will panic buy. The idea of the two year plan was to build this year and push on the next. But this year we've gone largely backwards which means panic buying and maybe more 'old mates' from Sunderland or Man U reserves - because that worked so well this year.

Of course, I could be completely wrong about how he'll tackle the season, I really hope so as I'd love nothing more than some sensible investments and an attractive playing style.

ME hasn';t thats the thing, also keane has come out and said it could possibly take 4-5 to get to where he needs the team to be, so really it all comes down to what ME wants.

None of us knows, i dont think he helps matters, but remaining invisiable and never actually commenting on keane, i think it only make transfers harder - for example teams will boost a price of a player up with the understanding that town will pay high amounts for urgent success. just my thought.

For me, if i was manager i'd look at Bardsley who would be a free, take a look at wallace and see what price we could get, if Cardiff dont' get promotion id' go and get chopra who i personally believe is worth about 2-3 mill, also maybe enquire about the likes of Koumas, Ledley for that creativity we need. get rid of stead, counago and garvan, quinn and others to finance the moves.

Thing is ME gave RK a two year contract. He was telling RK he had that long.

OK, it's possible he'd be willing to give RK longer but I seriously doubt it after this shambolic season. RK will have to show a lot next year to get an extension. But by then he will already have had to make his summer moves,I just hope they're sensible ones. If he signs any more Sunderland players I'll scream.

It'd be a shame to see Garvan and Pablo go, but I suspect you're right, RK would be more than willing to see them leave, no idea how much all those players you listed would raise though - not a lot I'm sure.

think for the lot we will get about £4 all together if you include trotter, upson etc as well.

False dichotomy: playing "attractive football" needs to be based on players "dig[ging] in, work[ing] hard and graft[ing]." You don't get one without the other.

Curbs is blamed at west ham but they are a fickle lot not like our supporters --rofl . they were about 5th in pl but it was after about 4 games so not exactly a liong term position and he didnt do anything after taking over from pardew. They didnt go down but pardew left when they were about 4th from bottom which is about where they finished under curbs first season

burley did have hearts at the top which is an achievemt considering the top two have won it the last 30 years maybe bar aberdeen in there one year ( probably under SAF )
Why that strange romanian ? got shot of him i dont know because after that hearts have done diddley

well one thing all them managers achieved was a good flowing game of football, and can you tell me when we achived that this year i think i see about 4 games intotal which acieved that, and one thing to say about those games was when the boniain was in goal, why you may ask well easy when the keepr had ball i hand he ditriubuted it quickly to the defence who then used some common dog and a few slick passes later the ball was heading towards goal,

unlike even arran and brian they hold on it far to long even if they do throw it to our defence its all to late the oposing team has back tracked, or they just hoof it up the pitch and its like a game of ping pong, you watch any top team the ball is relesed as early and safefully ass possible then passed through midfield with a killer pass to the strikers then its up to them what happens next.

that has been 90 % of our problem this year we just are to slow especially from midfield , on were and when to pass or run all very lack luster, peeps moan about garvan but when he is in the center of the park he does distrubutes well, unlike dare i say it grant or norris, they are 2 alike both remind me of jim but we need a matty in there, which i think garvan would do well, also the wingers need to wing more hopefully the argy can do this for us, i do like shane think he can link up nicly with the left midfield but again half the time delany or maccauly when they have the ball wont release him and just hoof it up the pitch.

which suprises me as keano use to ply in the hub of a a midfield for man u which was one of the best in the world and realy is bemusing to say the least

At the end of one of the most disappointing seasons in the nearly 50 years have been following town it is interesting to hear the GK talk about playing more attractive football. There was no pressure on Saturday and another sterile performance.Keane also bemoaned fact that we didnt hold out when leading. His GK may talk about playing more attractively but team is rarely set up to do this.Yes we have tightened up a bit defensively but play too negative to entertain. He has wasted most of money he has been provided with so far and looks as though ME is tightening purse strings so will do well to finish above Norwich next season let alone get anywhere near the prem,if this season is anything to go by.

Spot on with your comments naa...true,we weren't exactly playing good football at the beginning of the season when we had the chance to without the worry of relegation & as for promotion, well great if it comes along but the happiest years I remember as a town fan were the few under Burley leading up to our promotion in 2000...good football, promising kids being brought through in their droves & a scattering of inspired signings here and there..George used to work wonders..great times and I for one would love to see him back.

We're currently 10 points off the drop & about 40 off the top..I can't see us turning that around next year...plus i'm still waiting for anyone to explain to me what they've seen in Keane this season that makes them think it's going to be any better under him next season.......?

what makes you so sure it wont be any better.... for all you know the whole team have purposely played kak all season because they dont like the brand of pasta they have b4 a game and refuse to play properly untill the chef changes it and rightly so Keane has allowed them to because he likes not the pasta either. and when the chef changes the pasta for next season they all say rite come on then boys lets win the league.
This is football not Tic tac toe it is unpredictable because of it's very nature of infinite variables it can't be assessed as obsessively as most people do.
There are just as many signs that things have improved over the season and could lead to a more successfully year as there are signs that it might not happen.
anyone predicting failure under Keane will undoubtedly Bragg that they were correct if it happens and so will people who predict success..... and it would be almost as petty for both sides if you were to Bragg about predicting the flip of a coin and getting it rite in my oppinion the league this year was a completely different league to what it was last year at the very least by having 6 completely different teams in it not to mention any transfers changing the other teams.
it will be a completely different league next year by another 6 completely different teams again without taking transfers into account one season is not compariable to the next on that fact alone

Agree Lightning Boy - Keane has had a season getting ITFC nowhere - all he has managed to do is avoid relegation ( just ) and cause disruption within the team . One more year of the same - I can't wait ! Bring in a new manager !!

Magilton's team didn't look like he would get Town promotion but he didn't look like relegating them either. RK spent £8 million on players and farmed some of them out. Lots of talk about cheerio Pablo, Stead and Garvan what about Priskin, Edwards, Rosenoir (loan), Martin, Healy X 2. Alot of money spent to keep the bench warm or play reserves or elsewhere. Alot of rubbish bought and needs to probably be shifted on again probably at a loss. A record season for the worst start in club history, a record season for the most draws not inspiring at all.
If YOU were M E would you feel comfortable throwing more money at RK?

quite right osborne: with limited funds you can't afford to be so slapdash in the transfer market. It's been a very poor first season on the transfer front from RK.

Next season he will have to get pretty much every signing right, given he's bound to be on a more limited budget. Considering his three seasons as a manager so far that is highly unlikely - he's always bought several players to each success. He just can't do that here again.

Leadbitter and Delaney are pretty much his only successes and I'm not even sure we needed Leadbitter, as we had Norris. OK, Norris was out for a while, but he spent £3.5m on Leadbitter, so he was never intended to be a stop-gap, now he plays them both in the middle offering no guile or creativity.

Other signings have been OK, Rosenior looked OK until RK himself lost faith for some reason and was only on loan anyway, Colback has been excellent but isn't our player, B Murphy looks OK, but not really any better than Wright (yes, he went through a bad spell but so did the entire team).

That's not a great start is it?

Considering the team we're left with after loans go back etc and the need for improvement anyway, I'd say he needs 4 signings. That's quite a few players needed with limited funds.

Here's hoping.....

There's still no excuse for a p!ss poor display on saturday. I could have understood it if we needed a point for safety but there was nothing to lose.

there is no excuse but poor management with the relegation pressure off town SHOULD be playing attractive attacking football but under keane thats not possible he has drawn his team too safety and is still talking the same talk as when he took over.waffling about how we need some goal scorers blah blah
