Town Off to Histon Not Southend
Town Off to Histon Not Southend
Tuesday, 6th Jul 2010 12:40

Town’s pre-season friendly at Southend on Friday has been cancelled and replaced with a game against Blue Square Premier side Histon at their Glassworld Stadium (KO 7.45pm).

Shrimpers boss Paul Sturrock, who was appointed yesterday, felt that he didn’t have sufficient players to fulfil the fixture with only nine senior professionals currently at Roots Hall.

Town club secretary Sally Webb told the official site: "Paul spoke to Roy [Keane] and told him that unfortunately he wasn't in a position to put out a competitive team.

"We've been in contact with Histon and they have kindly agreed to play us on Friday at short notice, which helps everyone out."

The Histon squad includes former Blue Antonio Murray, who recently returned to the Cambridgeshire club, and ex-academy players Erkan Okay and Callum Stewart.

The Stutes are managed by former Cambridge United boss John Beck. Entry costs £5 for adults and £1 for under-16s

Yep. I was there with a load of Sheff Utd mates on way home after Town drew 1-1 with them the day before.
Leeds didn't know what hit them.
Histon put a great spread on for them afterwards, but they just F**cked off.
I was working in Leeds for the following 2 weeks with a Histon scarf in the car window.
Joy!

Typical rubbish comments from Elvis!

I am actually pleased about the change of opposition - looks like i'll be able to make it!

Thanks to Histon for helping out! Much appreciated!

On the whole though, pre-season is looking pretty disappointing. A major criticism of last year was the lack of much high quality opposition, which many believe was a significant factor in the slow start to the season, hasn't been rectified. Hopefully there will be lots of appropriate training to make up for it.

They say the night is darkest just before the dawn. I hope dawn is coming soon...
