Town Announce Squad Numbers
Thursday, 8th Jul 2010 10:44

Striker Connor Wickham has been handed the number nine shirt for the 2010/11 season. The 17-year-old takes Pablo Couñago’s number with the Spaniard one of several players who have been moved out of the ‘first 11’.

Aside from Couñago, Alex Bruce goes from being Town’s number five to 21 and Owen Garvan switches from seven to 17. All three were amongst the eight players recently made available by the Blues, with only Lee Martin from that list getting a number between one and 11, picking up the final shirt.

There are various other moves with skipper Jon Walters going to number 10, David Norris switching to eight, Damien Delaney to five, Shane O’Connor to three, Jaime Peters to two and Brian Murphy to one. Kevin Lisbie gets 33.

Couldn't they give Lisbie a 0 or negative number?

hhmm... Do no one on here read the articles?

So many of you are complaining that Keano has brought in no new players. Am I the only person who has seen the articles all summer where we must sell or move on players to lower the wage's overhead before Marcus Evans is willing to bring in new players.
Even with both Wrights gone (which I dont fully agree with either) That high wage over head has hardly moved.
So why are people getting on Keane's back when it is not his money to spend and has his hands tied. I am not sticking up for Keane, but just pointing out what some of you seem to be over looking.
I might not be able to get tomany games in a session, but that do not mean I care any less about "OUR" great ITFC !

Why are people calling for 3 upfront.... anyone remember last season!?
Hopefully the vote of confidence in Lee will get it out of him, does anyone know how long his contract is, out of curioristy?

Reduce the wage bill, Sack keane. That'l save a few million!

If i remember correctly Civelli asked for the number 13 shirt when we signed him as its his "Lucky number", if thats what a good player (Who cost £1mil) wants then why take it away and give it to Ian Mcloughin... Sorry but ive seen him play more than once- Absolute pants.

Wickham, 9, Nice to see we arnt relying on any one player in particular!

And how immature to give lisbie 33, I know he hasnt show it for ipswich but he can score goals if he plays regular football, double figures for col u and played out wide alot. Keane needs to give these players a chance. Good way to demoralise 8 players by transfer listing and demoting their numbers, thank god they didnt score 8 of the 9 goals against newmarket...............

I think that rather than saying we want to keep Keane because of his name I actually think it's the reverse and you want him out because of his name.

Surely people must see we are Ipswich Town and we give people a chance like we did with Sir Alf and Sir Bobby who also had poor first seasons at Fortress Portman Road.

Cheers Yallop for getting rid of IpswichElvis! Sick of it that every time someone shows faith in Keane they're dismissed as being blinded by his celebrity. For me the jury's out ,but he said he'd get us up in 2 years so lets give him this season to see if he can back up these views or otherwise. One of the things that makes me proudest as an Ipswich fan is we give our managers time, we are not the sort of club who sacks managers after one disappointing season. I'm sure the magic of the 91/92 season seemed unforseeable at the end of the 90/91 season when a few of the so-called "realists" on this site would have no doubt been begging for Lyall's sacking!

I don't think you can read too much into this at all.Okay - it's unlikely that Counago or Garvan are in Roy's plans, but you can bet Civelli will play if fit. Squad numbers are interesting - but little more. I doubt Edwards will be a regular first choice player. Ditto Martin - unless his form improves dramatically.

im reallt chuffed that wickham got number 9, i agree with most others, a bit supprising that martin got number 11 and not civelli, not unless civelli is supersticious in any way and didnt want the number 11 shirt????

Tampa Florida Blue: I've been posting that for a while now, but some people just don't want to hear it... RK has been told to clear out before he can buy, so we are NOT gonna see too much happening until people come in for some of our players. No matter that people post on here that A is great and B is the best passer in the club, none of the 8 on the list really showed much last term and so may not be that easy to offload. I also think RK might want to give Martin another go... but that's just my gut feel.

Jamie22: I think Martin's contract runs to 2014... not 100%, but pretty sure.

NScarff: You're correct Chiveli did ask for no 13 Shirt when he came as I believe it is a lucky number in parts of South America, but given he's been out for 16 months, maybe he now thinks that as he's in the UK, it's the UK's unlucky number, so wanted rid of it... I can't see any other reason for RK to take it off him. Don't know...

Yallop: Agree 100%, RK must be given time... No I don't blindly support him, but do feel 1 season is not long enough... I also have sighted Bobby Robson's early league standings (Not Ramsey's as i wasn't around then) and have also sighted Fergusons at Man Utd... they were given time and it did their clubs massive good that they were given time.

Can't understand how announcing squad numbers causes such a reaction on this site. All Norwich fans are loving this includng me you lot are a laughing stock!!!

Find it strange that so called Ipswich supporters whinge about everything lets face it ITFC are only a average championship side your expectations are far to high. You should be proud that your manager is such a big name in the game his been there and done it as a player an has ended managing a club that has no ambition and is poorly supported at home did'nt sell out at all last season (Fact)

So if your fed watching ITFC why don't you try and get tickets for a Norwich home game, Oh just remembered we sell out every week and have 24K season tickets holders, can't wait for the derby games next season when we double you.

Enjoy pre season no new signings. KEANO KEANO.

Why is Civelli number 26 and he is now back from injury, should be 11 and martin could do 26, or maybe put him in 32 and put Jamie Gritthis in 26, sure he would do better :L

Nice one Lisbie in 33, haha, lol why even bother giving him a number :L

IpswichElvis - just one question and an honest answer. Did you call for Jim's head after a disappointing first season? Did you call for his head after a miserable away showing in his second? Did you call for his head after a very disappointing third season - or did you ask for him to be given time? Because if you did call for Jim to be given time, then surely you can see that Roy has only had one season? You don't know what the moral of the squad was when he took over etc. None of us do. Surely, bearing in mind that Jim was given three season, Roy deserves until at least Christmas?

I dont see what the fuss is about with the squad numbers. Every player has to have a number, end of. The players that have been given numbers 1 to 11 are not definitely the first choice. Whether a player is number 9 or 99 should make no difference to how they play. As someone said changing the numbers is a clever marketing ploy by ITFC to perhaps sell a few more shirts as people who have players name on the back will want the correct squad number. As for no gaps for new signings, any players that leave will mean free numbers and also they can use numbers from 34 up!!

Why is Lisbie 33? Shouldn't he be P45?

Sibo as you keep quoting remember the start of Robsons era and Ferguson at Man Utd can you tell me when either of those managers had their team in a relegation fight for the majority of the season after spending more than any other team in the league on transfers and being one of the favourites for promotion ?
Managers do not get as long now ,the same as players who dont settle straight away that is football if results are not good by October Keane will be gone good/bad decision it doesnt matter it will be a fact .
And i believe Keane hasnt been given the financial backing because Evans is obviously an astute business man who wants some return for his large transfer investment last season before doing it again willy nilly this .Keane is yet to prove himself as a decent manager at Town a fact a lot seem to forget on here ,but maybe not by the chairman or the board .
Lets hope he can turn it around and we have a great start and good season .

And if Garvan was going to lose his number ,losing it to Edwards who was a lot worse last year must be a real kick in the teeth ,play three in the centre like spain with Garvan ,Norris and Leadbitter it would work well Roy

Surco- Keane did not spend more on his team than anyone else in the league.

Lets just back the team for a good start.
