Town Turn Down Palace Bid for Garvan
Town Turn Down Palace Bid for Garvan
Friday, 9th Jul 2010 14:13

Crystal Palace boss George Burley has revealed that Town have turned down his £100,000 offer for midfielder Owen Garvan. Garvan is understood to be amongst the eight players manager Roy Keane has made available for transfer.

Former Blues boss Burley said: “Owen hasn’t been getting a game and I would like to take him. He’s a good passer of a ball and someone who I feel who can do well for me. He’s my type of player.

“We’re short of players at Palace and I have several irons in the fire to increase our squad as soon as possible. As regards Garvan, a loan is possible for an initial down payment with more to come later. I’m hopeful I can sign Owen.”

Town are understood to want £400,000 for the 22-year-old Irish U21 international skipper, who joined the Blues from Dublin side Home Farm after leaving school.

Meanwhile, Burley has confirmed that former Blues loanee Stern John will not be returning to Selhurst Park for next season having failed to appear for pre-season training. The Trinidadian's Eagles contract was up at the end of the season.

Garvan is my type of player too... let's hope Keane goes before he has a chance to lose our better players

He won't go, Keane has realised in the last week just how good a player he is.

Can see palace doing well under Burley.. will personally be sad to see Garvan leave, even if he does have a very poor attitude, alot of potential and very different alongside Norris

GB - bit of a pishtake £100k though, come on man!

Have'nt got a problem with Owen going, as we do have leadbitter and norris with a few players back-up. Is a decent player but time to move on. On the other hand £100,000 is pretty crap and should hold on for near the half million mark

I like Burley, but 100k takes the pish. Come on throw some of those millions around like you did on Finidi & Sereni.

Garvan = attitude problem, don't be a nob mate, you don't know what you are talking about, probably the nicest guy at the club.

We want £400K! Can't see us getting that for him. £200K max. Over rated and loved by a few fans who have no idea about football and think he is a world beater because he came through the youth team.

I think GB can see a bargain to be had! Come in low initially then bite then hand off when we sell ridiculously low! Only decent deal would be to get Ambrose back but I can't see GB letting him go either!

Chislehurstblue you are absolutely spot on! All those Garvan lovers need to remember he aint a young player anymore, over 150 town games and hasnt improved in that time. Plays alright when he gets a bit of time on the ball and a bit of space, absolutely useless when the midfield is congested and we are being squeezed (which the majority of teams in this league do). Oh yeah by the way he only passes it sideways.

Its a bit late for Garvan to 'breakthrough' .... he would have done it by now! Sadly he isn't the same player he was before his personal problems a few years ago. Reasonable player yes, great player .... no. We have better lads at the club, and although £100k is a bit stingy, I'd be surprised if we get any more than £250-300k for him IMHO.

Good luck Garvs, wherever you end up.

Q: What exactly has Gavan done in his 5/6 years since breaking into the first team???

A: Not a lot

Much too little.. are we becoming a soft touch for inner city clubs to try to rip off? this offer is a bit like being invited to play find the lady!!

I knew George lost it at the end of his time at Town, but £100,000???

Aren't palace in administration? So 100k might be a fair chunk of their transfer budjet! I think he would do very well for Burley at palace, I hope both Garvs and Burley do well next season.

Not got a problem in letting garvan go as long as roy has got a creative midfielder to bring in to replace him,all i saw when he didn't play last season in the midfield was a bunch of headless chickens running around winning the ball then procede to give it away or not know what to do with it

Didn't we pay £110k for Healey from Cork? Enough said......

Can someone tell me please, why do people think he has a bad attitude? What has he actually done? Personally, I would still like us to keep Garvan fpr a while till things settle down.

George isn't taking the pish, keanes attitude towards garvan means who knows what he'd take. If we accepted 200k then 100k seems like a reasonable first offer.

I recall we paid 250k for currie but bid 100k first off.

Ridiculously low offer. Would want at least 400k but if getting Garvan, Lisbie etc of wagebill 4 not a lot means we can bring in Chopra and a rightback then I would take it
