Keane: Don't Read Too Much Into First Two Games
Keane: Don't Read Too Much Into First Two Games
Saturday, 10th Jul 2010 09:39

Boss Roy Keane says no much should be read into his use of a 4-3-3 formation in the two pre-season friendlies so far and which players have started the victories at Newmarket and Histon. Keane felt the 6-0 win at the Glassworld Stadium was another good run-out for his squad but that sterner challenges lie ahead.

The Town manager said: "It was a good workout for the players. They all got another 45 minutes. Luca’s had another half hour, so there are just positives and the strength of the opposition will improve next week when we play PSV.

“The whole point of the two games this week was as a fitness exercise. Credit to the opposition, they showed good fitness levels and got stuck into us. Don’t look too much into the team shape and the lads who were starting and who finished the game.

“It was just about giving every player 45 minutes under their belts. Don’t over analyse it.”

Keane says that his players returned from their holidays without putting on too many pounds and so far everyone has avoided picking up any niggles: “Most modern footballers when they have a good break they come back in shape and there was never an issue last year with our boys.

“We’ve been back for almost two weeks now and fingers crossed we’ve had no injuries and hopefully that will continue.”

The pre-season programme continues today when a reserves side faces Hadleigh at their Millfield ground (KO 3pm).

generalpublic - 'supporting' Ipswich appears to be making you so very unhappy. You seem so negative, it can't be good for you. Maybe it's time to support another club if it's making you so unhappy?

I would suggest that anyone who attention seeks as much as 'general public' must be very bored and lonely!!..... Though actually I find him quite amusing!

tortoise, I found him amusing until he kept at it at around his 100th post. It is blatently obvious that he is a naaarwich fan that is a loner and has to sit on message boards etc trying to wind people up all day. What a poor lonely child he is.

I bet General Public is Alf Inge Haaland in disguise, he just constantly follows Keano moaning like a little bitch because he couldn't get any compensation!

Whack! Ouch my knee!

What Keano the messiah is trying to say is that we played 2 games against some Sunday morning teams and managed to get a few wins. However, he is also trying to let us know that it will probably take us 20 games in the Championship to score that many so don't get too carried away.

I hope RK does stick with the 4-3-3 formation because with the players we have at present it is the formation that will get the best from the team... Having Walters on the right and either Civelli or Martin on the left best suits these players. They like to attack, but not off the shoulders of the defenders. How many times have you heard people say Walters is more effective coming from wide right? Quite a bit... well using this formation allows him to do that, but still be one of the main attackers. Walters isn't effective as a Target Man... and let's be honest, at the moment the only striker we have of any worth is Wickham... so if you play 4-4-2 you end up either using Pablo/Stead/Priskin who have't shown themselves well over the last year.... or Walters, who is far better from wide... so I like it... added to the fact the two wide players drop when we don't have the ball, amking us stronger in midfield...

SiBo I agree the 4-3-3 is a very attacking formation and it can also quickly be turned into a defensive formation 4-5-1 just by dropping the wingers back to midfield. Also the 3 in the middle suits us as we can play with Norris, Leadbitter and Garvan all in their favourite positions.
