Keane: No Deals Imminent
Keane: No Deals Imminent
Saturday, 10th Jul 2010 10:01

Town manager Roy Keane says no transfers in or out of Portman Road are imminent but feels that the same is true for many other clubs at this stage of the summer. Keane expects more business to take place nearer to the start of the season.

The Blues boss says there is plenty of talk between managers even if there are very few actual moves: “It’s very quiet. I think it’s been the same for lots of clubs, particularly in the Championship, I don’t think there’s too much money around.

“There are plenty of phone calls going on. I’ve had a few calls about some of my players, I’ve made enquiries for some other players and it’s fun and games at the moment.”

Keane says that it’s likely that some of his fringe players will move on before he adds to his squad with owner and chairman Marcus Evans determined to trim the Portman Road wage bill: “I don’t think anything will happen over the next few weeks and I’ve got a decent squad as it is, but it’s getting the balance of the squad right.

“I’m fine for numbers but there are one or two areas I’d like to strengthen and until I move one or two players out, I don’t see any player coming to Ipswich in the next week or two.”

However, the Town manager says that deals sometimes come out of the blue: “The strange thing about football is that things can change very quickly, don’t be surprised if something happens tomorrow. I can’t predict what will happen.

“As I say, there are lots of phone calls and lots of enquiries coming into the club for some of our players and I’ve spoken to one or two managers about potentially bringing in one or two targets, but that’s all it is at the moment, a few phone calls.

“I’m pleased with the players, pleased with the squad, the numbers we have and I’m in no mad rush to strengthen. The players are working hard, the spirit’s good and I’m very lucky I’m working with some good players.”

Keane says that Crystal Palace have made no firm offer for midfielder Owen Garvan, despite George Burley confirming his interest yesterday: “I think there have been stories of offers being in for some of our players, but there’s been no offer made for Owen Garvan.

“Managers have conversations every day about players. I’ve done the same, I’ve been doing it this morning, but in terms of concrete offers for Owen Garvan, it’s certainly not true, but there’s no surprise there in terms of speculation.”

There's no need to panic.

I'm sure that Steve Bruce has identified which of his reserve team he wishes to offload.

they have two targets ! presumably both pinned on Keano ! but things must have improved, he's pleased with the players & squad , the same ones he was pissed off with last season .Im looking forward to new season ,''new hope'', but honestly even the Keane faithful cant really see promotion coming with this squad surely.

I'm looking forward to the season now, (false hope). Good to see Wickham score last night as well.

I don't know what to say to try and feel positive. All the crap keane said right at the end of the season he is looking to sign 3 or 4 new players before pre-season e.t.c. Once again all talk no action. I would be happy just to see at least 2 new players coming to town and 1 of them has to be chopra. He will bring a lot of postivity around the club and actually give us something to look forward to!

Nice to hear keane recognises there are areas that need strengthening, was begining to think he was happy with oconnor and peters at fb!

Also keane reiterates the club will not bring in players until some players leave, this is common sense, why can't pople understand this!?

Are you people completly blinkered in your anti-RK views? Do you not read what is going on?
FACT: RK said at the end of last year he wanted 3/4 new signings.
FACT: Ipswich agreed a fee for Chopra, Chopra spoke to RK and wanted to join, when it got down to contract negotiations with Evans/Clegg the deal fell through
FACT: Clegg has said we made an operating loss of £5m last year and we must reduce current wage bill before we can buy new players.
FACT: Clegg then re-itterated the above and even pointed out that money was available for the actual transfer, but we have to reduce wage bill first.
FACT: We have not been able to move on any of the players RK doesn't want.
Put the above together and you realise we will not be signing anyone of any significance until we get rid first... Given this RK is understandilby now saying he likes the players he's got... he thinks they are good, etc. It is called man-management...

Watching the game at Histon last night, it really brought home what a MASSIVE squad we have! The second half team (i.e. our second string) was full of high paid players. Stead, Martin, Bruce, Edwards - all only played the second half - when it was clear Roy picked his strongest side in the first half. We then have players like Lisbie who could not even make the 22. ME is probably right to want the wage bill reduced ... but who will want some of these players. Quinn and Healy looked very poor last night - but who will sign them?

It's clear this is all out of Roy's hands - he is identifying the players he wants.

Well here's a moan. I think we're going into this season with a fraction of the resources we had last year, and which failed (miserably). Supporter morale seems to be at an all time low. Unless something radical changes I think we're setting our stall out for failure again this year. I really hope I'm wrong.

I'm not sure it is the same for all Championship clubs, as didn't I read that all teams apart from Hull, Portsmouth and us have signed at least one player? Leeds and Norwich have each bought six players thus far and every day I read about transfers on the BBC Football website, so there is some movement.

I remember Keane said he wanted four or five players, two of which were free transfers, and ideally he wanted them in for the start of pre-season. He is now in no rush to strengthen.

I know we need to reduce the wage bill, my fear is my the time we get shot of any of the listed players all the bargains (especially free transfers) will have long gone, and we'll be left looking at August panic buys who take weeks to settle in.

God help us if we sell Garvan & then get an injury to either Leadbitter or Norris..that'll come back to bite Roy on the arse.

TractorRoyNo1 added 12:58 - Jul 10
if is attitude was right he would be a £3m player, sadly it isn't, play one good game, one ok, 3 bad, then dropped - which ends up with him being worth £400k
