Town and Newcastle Targeting Romanian Striker
Town and Newcastle Targeting Romanian Striker
Monday, 12th Jul 2010 23:00

Town and newly-promoted Newcastle United have made enquiries regarding Dinamo Bucharest striker Andrei Cristea, according to reports in the Romanian press. The 26-year-old scored 20 goals and recorded seven assists in 38 games in all competitions last season.

Dinamo have put a price of £1.7 million on Cristea, but Newcastle are reportedly set to test their resolve with a bid of £1.25 million.

The Blues are also said to have shown interest in Cristea but with Dinamo preferring to deal with Premier League clubs and their greater financial resources.

A quick frontman, Cristea was born in Bacău and started his career with hometown side FCM Bacău, joining Steaua Bucharest for $1 million in 2004.

Two years later, having failed to establish himself with Steaua as they won two league titles, the 5ft 10½in tall striker joined FC Timişoara, despite interest from French side Sochaux.

A loan spell at Politehnica Iaşi followed in the second half of the 2007/08 season, Cristea’s goals helping save the club from relegation from the top flight.

In May 2008 Cristea signed a five-year deal with his current club. After scoring two goals in eight games, Cristea moved back to Politehnica Iaşi for a second loan spell in January 2009, returning to Dinamo the next summer, having netted seven times in 15 games as they again avoided the drop.

Once back at Dinamo, Cristea established himself in their first team and was the top scorer in the Romanian league during 2009/10 with 16 goals, netting a further four in other competitions.

Cristea has been capped nine times at full level and on 14 occasions by Romania’s U21s, but so far without netting an international goal.

Well he knows how to take a penalty if nothing else. I wouldn't judge him by a video though. I am sure if you compiled footage of all Lisbie's goals for Col U you make him look a bit tasty.

I would be nice to sign someone though, just to give a little ray of hope.

I have it on the good authority of Paul the Octopus that Keane is considering bidding for Torres, Iniestas and Fabregas. It is not known whether the offer of a first class stamp, bus pass and 30p we found down the back of the sofa will interest their current clubs. What is certain is that some fans at this club will before long start booing them.

Would love to see us sign a striker and he may be worth a punt, but you've got to question his pedigree. He's 26 and by the sounds of things he's only just managed his first good season in the Romanian league.

@ stainless, first comment on this page - let me asure you, romanian league is nothing like scottish. there are 5 or 6 pretty even clubs and not only two reserved champions of the state. beside that, romanian league is the strongest league in southestearn europe. plus, on this video, cristea scored almost all of his goals against strong opposition (that being likes of rapid, steaua, cluj etc.)
so, he is a good player. but...

It'll never happen.... more rumour..... more waiting....... Although I did hear over the weekend that we are in the process of signing a new cleaning lady, you know cleaning the changing rooms, toilets, making the the tea etc..... & Keane's gonna give her a shirt number, just in case we one of our centre backs gets injured, she can play sweeper!!!

Even without Newcastle in the picture, not going to happen. We need a proven Championship goalscorer. I don't think ME would give the go ahead for an expensive punt from Romania

General public - what a pathetic statement, feck off to support man u, Chelsea or arsenal, perhaps, just perhaps, your expectations might be met once in a while, and for you and ur keane haters, it's the club and the badge us true fans follow whoever is in charge, what ever position we are in. u are an insult to us.

we should be aiming at players like simeon jackson, wudnt need huge wages, would be eager to play at this level, wouldnt need a huge transfer fee and could easily do a much better job than any striker we have minus wickham but he still is not proven yet, lambert from southampton would also be worth a look at even though would be more expensive finally tresor kandol from leeds is a decnt player who is going on a free altogether....

Looks like a good player, But i don't think we have any chance at all. If CLEGG AND ME could'nt sort out the deal for chopra what chance do we have. I can appriciate we need to sell before we buy but we have to sign a decent enough striker for the the championship level i.e chopra! Clegg and Evans must see what we are missing? Goals=points= possible success!

Just looked him up on Wikipedia:

"Cristea proved to be a player that coaches and fans could rely on, with his consistent performances, steady scoring, his modest and intelligent opinions and discreet lifestyle."

Sounds like he'd fit right in at Newcastle with the likes of Joey Barton and Andy Carroll!

My apathy for RK 's ability to get anyone in now is such that I canty even be arsed to read this latest striker link story.

Am fast becoming accetping of the simply fact that Evans appears to be allowing RK to swing from his own rope so to speak , and that a new manager will be in place come Xmas . There doesnt even appear to be any liklijood of these 8 playesr on the list , leaving the club (what a surprise , not ) guess they'll just sit out their remaining contracts then !

Chance for goals. might b good as a partner for wickham. Wont jiion tho, newcastle are involved so he will go for the money. Needless to say newcastle are premiership standard. Look at us league 1 standard!.

hollywoodwinge - would you follow them if they asked you to jump off a cliff? Now go away young man and be good.

What a truly ignorant statement to make? Did you even think before you wrote that or is it that your IQ is about the level of a retarded gnat?

Look, until we get rid off he players that are not wanted then we won't be signing anybody. Rather than look at who we should be bringing in I'd rather see a headline saying so and so are after pabs, or garven etc..Like another poster said the wage bill has gone from £5m to £14m. Its not sustainable especially with 14,000 season tickets sold, do fans on here want us to be another Pompey/Hull/Saints?

Vexorg added 14:44 - Jul 13
Ain't happening Hype. The big earners are happy to stay and collect with a possibility of a loan or two .. where's lee martin going on £12k a week? We'll be lucky if someone pays us a quarter of that

Ampthillblue added 14:46 - Jul 13
We don't get the ball in the 6 yard box enough for this guy.

hype313 added 14:50 - Jul 13
Yeah thats the problem we have, anyone wanting new players are dreaming. Martin will happily sit on £12k a week knowing that he is a very lucky boy and should be playing in league 2. Im not a Keane Outer but you cant blame ME for keeping the purse strings tight with what's happened the past 12 months. I still think that a Stead/Wickham partnership could be quite potent next season, the alternative being spunking £4m on Chopra, No thanks.

Well, seems like keane has widened his net for scouting which is good.

And as for not signing anyone yet, I think that is a very good thing. Keane needs to prove that he can MANAGE and not just try and buy an entire team. When he took over it only needed minor changes and he's since spent a shedload so if that doesn't work then get rid, therefore perhaps giving the next man a fighting chance with a bit of cash left.
