Walters Wants Town Exit
Walters Wants Town Exit
Sunday, 1st Aug 2010 09:13

Town captain Jon Walters is reported to have asked for a transfer. The 26-year-old has been tipped for a move away from Portman Road all summer with QPR and Stoke both linked.

The former Republic of Ireland B international, who played the full 90 minutes against West Ham yesterday, is said to have made the request but is yet to formally put it in writing.

A fortnight ago, QPR were reported to have had an offer turned down by the Blues. The fee was claimed to be £2.5 million, although more recent suggestions that the bid was just over £1 million appear more realistic.

Stoke have been eyeing the striker-turned-midfielder since 2008 and were again mentioned in connection with a move last week.

Walters joined the Blues from Chester City for a fee of £100,000 plus top-ups, which would ultimately take the deal to £200,000, in January 2007.

Meanwhile, Swansea sent a scout to watch the Blues take on West Ham at Portman Road yesterday. Swans manager Brendan Rodgers is believed to be interested in Blues striker Tamás Priskin, who played under him at Watford. Rodgers is believed to have made a £400,000 initial offer to test the water.

Blues boss Roy Keane is not looking to sell Priskin and has been impressed with him in pre-season, even if the Hungarian international is yet to score.

JW has been one of the best performers butr if the right offer came in it wouldnt surprise me if he was sold. He's become jack of all trades whereas in early days he made the right side his own and the team benefitted both in goals and assists. If he's unhappy then sell him and move on.

If a decent offer comes in , I think we should take it. He is not the player he was when he first arrived, and certainly since he became captain. This is not the first time, in this and other sports, where a player has been affected by the captaincy.
I think we have a ready made replacement as captain in Mark Kennedy

Its a no brainer if £2 million is on the table. We'll need that money when Mogga tries to buy Garvan back in December!

Let's see if it is true and if so what sort of fee we are talking about (well, the media speculation of the fee as it would be "undisclosed" of course). Walters has always seems committed to Ipswich and has been a tireless worker. If an offer from a Premier League side comes in, who can blame him for wanting to move on as it is very unlikely Ipswich will go up for a few years. At 26, perhaps the time is now for Walters if he wants to move up?

Jon is 26 and coming into his prime. If he gets the chance to move to Premier League than he should take it! We picked him up for peanuts and if we get 2mil+ than its good business for Town and good for Walters.
Stoke are the perfect Premier club for him. Liam Lawrence is heading to Celtic and he would be an ideal replacement.
Jon is also on the fringes of the Ireland squad (called up to B team a few times) and a move to Premiership would push him up the que.
I cant see him going to QPR! No benefit to that (except financial).

My only real problem is if Jon has asked for a transfer, why now 1 week before start of season??

Wouldn't want to see JW leave but like most have said if we get a decent offer and he gets a chance to play prem football then fair play on both counts i say. I think sometimes aswell, if by selling one of our best assests(which at this stage might not actually be true), finances then may allow us to get in maybe 2 or 3 players in other positions which need strengthening, maybe Chopra and whoever else, and could hopefully make us a better all round team. Whether that is what will happen or not remains to be seen i suppose.

will be sad to see him go if true, but he hasn't been the same player under keane that he was under magilton, so i don't know if there is some dis-agreement between manager and player, but we should get as uch for him as possible if he wants to go,let him because we don't want him to do a ronaldo and play half hearted whilst appearing to be giving 100%.

What the hell is going on? I have been a passionate Town supporter for 35 years and this has to be one of the darkest times that i have experienced. All our decent players are being sold for peanuts and being replaced with what i can only describe as mediocre dross. I didn't go to the game yesterday but i was in a pub in Bury last night talking to two West Hams supporters and i asked them what they thought and they reckoned that both teams would struggle to stay in their respective divisions this season.

Walters was made our club captain not so long back and always gives 100%. he may have sold his house, he may be waiting for the right house comes along before he buys a new one. He may be building his dream home and waiting for it to be finished, his wife may want to move closer to her family, Who know's.
This story get wheeled out every year and phil never give up the sorce who has so far been wrong. Walters would have made his intention know at the end of the season and would have been one of the names on the 8 to go list as the club would have been able to sell him quickly. With the players Keane is bring to the club Walters can see that we are building a team for the future (Fulop Kenadey possible Chopra and another midfielder) and we will be in the prem in the next 2 years so he has the chance of prem football
If Walters want to go for what ever the reason then so be it. He has been a great servant for the club on and off the field and he has blue blood when he pulls on the shirt of town. Good luck to you Jon what ever you do and thank you for that great hat trick against Bristol City. Do hope you will be leading the Town out next Saturday.

Not surprised !! an effort player who had a great season under Jim but his standards have dropped a little of late so perhaps the time has come for him to move on, at the right price.Hope he goes to Stoke as a new challange will prob bring the best out of him again dont want him playing against us.

if he dos'nt want to be here, get rid. i just hope we get someone of similar quality to replace him, not just some kak sunderland reserve. would be sad to see walters go, one of the only players who looked like they gave a sh*t last season.

Good! Let him go. he is slow and genrally poor. 2.5 million is a win, i would sell him for £400,000

PimsNumber1 added 14:23 - Aug 1
i wouldnt sell him for 400k simply because what would we get for that money ?

he must be worth 1mill+ but he is better than priskin and martin who we paid 1.5 mill + for , each

I can never understand transfer fees , say 4 mill for chopra , thats 4 mill over say 3 years so it costs 26k BEFORE wages to get him through the door. Free transfers are surely incredible value . Take mc auley over 3 years , cost 1.1 mill = 7.5k a week BEFORE wages

Dont even go there on Martin at 1.5 mill fee plus 12k reportedly a week wages

If he does want to go then he needs to be sold. He had 1 very good season with us but has not been outstanding since then. It would solve the problem of where to fit him in the team as he doesn't seem 100% happy upfront or right midfield wher he was forever going inside meaning we looked lopsided at times and unfortunately he is not good enough to build the team around. It may also mean we have to start to try and pass the ball or run through teams with pace and skill instead of lumping it at his forehead all match. I'm sure he's a great fella and everybody has good things to say about him but just perhaps his time at ITFC is now over. If he does go, I hope its soon to allow us to bring in other players before the window shuts

Excellent news! let Walters go especially for that sort of money and if he doesn't want to play for us then no point of keeping him. It all went down hill when Jim refused to sell him to a Premiership club a couple of years ago. So if the 100% negative boys want someone to blame then Jim is your man!

Re Priskin - after his display yesterday, I wouldn't even consider a £400K bid.

Jas

Who has said that he doesn't want to play for us. He is a model professional who has spilt blood for the team. Who could ask for more? If he goes, and while that looks probable right now, it is by no means certain, he can leave with his integrity intact knowing that he has always done his best in an Ipswich shirt. If he stays are you going to treat him as an outcast? While not in the premier league of ITFC legends most of us will think of him in a more generous manner if he does move on.

Also to blame Jim for him supposedly wanting to go now is simply rediculous.
