Town Complete Scotland Signing
Town Complete Scotland Signing

Town have confirmed the signing of Wigan striker Jason Scotland for a fee understood to be £750,000. The Trinidad and Tobago international, whose move to Town was first revealed on TWTD earlier in the month, has signed a two-year deal.

Scotland was unveiled at a press conference at Portman Road this lunchtime and says he’s pleased to have joined the club: “I’m delighted to be here and an Ipswich player and hopefully I can continue to score goals in the Championship and carry Ipswich Town into the Premiership.”

Manager Roy Keane said: "Jason is a good player and I'm delighted to have him at the club. He will bring us something different.

"He is more of a poacher than the other strikers we have here, who do a lot of work down the channels.

"We are always going on to our front players about being in and around the six-yard box and Jason will do that.

"He has proved he can score goals at this level but we have to be patient with him and give him time to settle in."

Town chief executive Simon Clegg confirmed that the move had been expected to go through last week but Wigan manager Roberto Martinez wanted to keep him for the weekend game against Chelsea.

Clegg says he’s pleased to finally get his man: “I’m absolutely delighted to have completed the signing of Jason. I think we as a club recognise that one of the areas we were short on last season was putting the ball in the back of the net and we wanted a striker with a proven record of doing so at this level.”

Scotland started his career his career in his home country with San Juan Jabloteh and Defence Force, where he played alongside his close friend Carlos Edwards.

In 2003 he joined Dundee United after a trial, moving on to St Johnstone two years later and then Swansea City for a fee of £25,000 in 2007.

Scotland enjoyed a hugely successful spell with the Swans, netting 29 goals in all competitions during their 2007/08 League One promotion campaign and 24 in the Welsh side’s first year back in the Championship.

Last summer the 5ft 8in tall striker moved on to Wigan for £2 million but the switch hasn’t been a success, the Trinidadian netting only one league goal last season.

Nicknamed Rocket, Scotland has won 41 full international caps and has scored eight goals, playing alongside Edwards and former Blues loanee Stern John.

The 31-year-old, who has been handed the number 10 shirt will be in the squad for tomorrow’s Carling Cup tie at Crewe.

£750000 is sensible money for a proven striker at this level, despite what some people say, at 31 he should be at the peak of his powers considering they type of forward he is. £4mil for Chops is not good. I would say £1.5mil to £2.5mil would be realistic. If we do give in to £4mill Cardiff want than any other targets we go for will also certainly have inflated values.

By paying over the odds for a Chops (or any other player) we are only encouraging other clubs to increase the value of their players if Town are interested. We might as well have a sign saying "chumps" around the clubs neck. Hopefully and it looks as if ME is not giving in. I think he has learned the hard way from the Priskin & Martin situation.

Welcome Jason, we wish you every success at Portman Road!!

At last!!! Its now 18 players that RK has moved on including fringe players, loanees and Ben Thatcher(remember him),since the start of this year;and if as RK has hinted this could be the last permanent signing before the window closes;then I feel he has been short changed somewhat.
He has now been allowed to purchase 3 players this year for approx 1,575,000 plus one free transfer and two loanees;but has had to let players go which has brought Mr Evans some £3,400,000 plus fee for Liam Trotter.
However we must not forget that since Mr Evans took over the club he has forked out some £12m initially and has allowed RK to purchase players totalling some £10m.This is excluding the money he paid to creditors on the £35m debt club had at takeover. It is rumoured that he only paid about a third of amount owed to get the debts which are still held against the club at the full amount.
In summary he has paid out at least £35m so far;but would recoup this from the
debt still registered against the club;should Roy gets us to promised land.
Heres hoping

Should be a tidy finisher on championship level. Also a different type and size forward to Connor when he returns. But we've let out many now so another two maybe needed. That should come with loans this last week when the premier squads have to be finally settled.

Good signing. Really hope it's not true that this will be the only permanent signing before the end of the transfer window. With so many players being sold at the owners request we need reinforcements!

Welcome on board Jason!! Unless Priskin starts to do the business I think we need another striker tho' exspecially while Conor is injured.

Really pleased about this signing, Scotland has always been a favourite player of mine, one which i'd have liked to see at PM, and i'm delighted that he is now.
Let's hope he shows us that he's worthy of wearing the number 10 shirt

Wickham, Priskin, Scotland & Murray... don't forget Murray. He is at the same stage Wickham was last season. I'm not against a thin squad if the board is capable of getting quick loan signings, it will bring on the youngsters.

Don't want to worry anyone, but wasn't Lisbie a 31 year old for 750,000?

I wouldnt read too much into scotlands failings at wigan, i think it was probably a case of him not fitting into how wigan play, they are hardly a footballing side unlike swansea (yes i know Martinez was manager then and at Wigan) and us. I feel the style we play will far better suit Scotland and hopefully this will see the goals return for him. Welcome and good luck jason.

V happy with this move. Lets hope we Rocket to the top of the league this weekend.

Like the idea of biguns & littleuns upfront & will be good to have more pace & hopefully better quality finishing which we sorely missed last season (though Connor is a hell of a lot quicker than he's given credit for - often has to check his runs as passes to him are delayed)

Wonder how match fit Scotland is at the mo?
