Keane Disappointed With Defeat
Keane Disappointed With Defeat
Saturday, 13th Nov 2010 18:32

Town manager Roy Keane was understandably disappointed with his side's 3-1 home defeat to Barnsley. In addition to the loss, Mark Kennedy and Luke Hyam damaged their hamstrings and are out of next week’s trip to Hull.

Keane said the game typified how things are at the present time: “Poor result, poor performance, not a great day and a couple more injuries. That’s the way it’s going for us. No sympathy, we’ll look to bounce back next weekend.”

The Portman Road crowd booed their team off and were vocally critical of the substitution of Tamás Priskin, something the Blues boss feels is inevitable when a team is doing poorly: “When you don’t win matches every decision is going to be analysed and criticised, that’s the nature of football.

“They were pretty supportive last year when we went 14 games without a victory - the Watford game I’ll never forget - they were very, very good to us. But at this moment in time, you’re still hoping that fans would understand where we’re at.

“Don’t underestimate the loss of Gareth McAuley, David Norris and Grant Leadbitter. I don’t want to use that as an excuse but they are important players for us. We just have to get on with it.”

Keane explained the thinking behind his substitutions: “We thought we’d get a bit more from Jack and Jake getting a bit more forward. They’re two young players and it’s a big responsibility doing a job in the middle of the park, so with the extra support from Luke we thought we might get back into it.

“But, of course, the next goal changed things and we tried to mix it up again. We tried a few different things and it just didn’t work.”

Keane's controversial decision to withdraw Priskin was amongst those alternative options: “When we took Tamás off we changed it with Connor going up with Ronan and actually I thought they did OK in the last 20 minutes. OK, they’re young players and you could say the game was over.

“Obviously there were a few people disappointed and they probably thought we were going to stick with the one up front, but of course we changed that with Jack coming over to the left and I thought Ronan did quite well and was perhaps unlucky not to score. It was a straight swap in that sense."

Tykes manager Mark Robins was delighted with his players’ display: “It was without doubt the best performance since I became Barnsley manager and it was a continuation of what we saw on Tuesday night against Preston.

“The players took the confidence they gleaned from that game into today. We passed it well, the movement was fantastic and what we added today was our finishing. It's a step in the right direction and pleasing.”

Don't know what I can say that hasn't already been said!!, but I just wanted to register a comment agreeing with 99% of you!!..... (Picture this in your mind) (Keane sitting in his lounge listening to Frank Sinartra!) "And now the end is near, & I must face, the final curtain!!!.......

Yorksblue - just went on an inflation calculator £1.60 in 1980 would be £5.11 in 2010 using the retail price index. Instead it's £28 minimum at PR. Yes all clubs are up there charging ludicrous amounts to pay ludicrous wages, but what about some element of value for money?

Yorksblue - You can remember pies from 30 years ago? They must have been good!

I wouldn't mind if Clegg went too. I fail to see what he has brought to the club!

Can anyone remember RKs comments at the end of the transfer window when he bemoaned the lack of action from the chief exec to strenghten the squad in key areas as he feared what would happen when injuries kicked in?
What is Roy Keanes previous record as a Manager?
Did he take Sunderland from bottom of the championship in September to win the title? In his second year he stopped the yo-yo tradition in Sunderland and laid the foundations for their current position. But in Sunderland he had a solid Chairman, financial backing and a core of 40,000 supportive fans unlike the small town whingers in Ipswich.

Poyet and Tarrico would be an ideal partnership and the later loved Ipswich Town.If ME wants to get a bad name for selling his Olympic tickets with Cleeggy he is going the right way by keeping Keane in charge....... Or is this his way of attracting pundits because he knows that RK will keep the Marcus Evans name in front of people. Not so good if we slipped into the 1st Division, come on and do the right thing...

The only reason our players are scared sh**less, as some of u put it, is that our moaning, winging, quite, songless, embarrassment of supporters.. boo them, groan, moan & cheer the other team. I don't care about keano, he isn't going no matter what anyone says on hear.. Please support our team.. Please!!

everyone will support a team that plays good football win or lose simple as that. but it wont be a mr keane team as the last 2 seasons have proved. actually last year was probably better because at least we could rely on a 0-0 draw most games and get 8-1 or 9-1 on correct score on the betting tote.and make a few bob out of our useless performances.but this year results are all over the place and its hard to predict how many goals we will lose by.

totally disagree with the fact that it is fans scaring the players, actually i thought for the first few minutes the crowd really got behind the team, then when they saw the shocking display in front of them gradually the silence took over....... I simply cannot believe people are still behind keane and worse blaiming the board..... we have a half decent team whom with a manager with any kind of tactial ability would be performing week in week out. however we have a manager or rules by fear, who makes shocking tactical mistakes and refuses to put his hand up and admit he has made a mistake and worse still blames everyone except himself. Up till saturday i backed the manager, but after that performance i cannot bare to see the team i love falling apart any further - the football is some of the worse i have ever seen at portman road, irrespective of the score. i did not boo the players or indeed the manger, i agree this is very very wrong. BUT it still remains his time has come and he needs to go before its too late otherwise i can see our players out of contract moving on to pastures new.

The final point for the weekend, we got turned over yesterday, we played badly but the league is still so tight we can make the errors back up. I feel that Keane has taken yesterday as a turning point, if you listen to his post match comment on the BBC he seems quite shocked at the crowd and doesn't have an answer. Maybe this will have a positive effect on him and his back room staff. I think we don't need a new manager I think we need some back room staff with experience and can give sound advice. Not like yesterday and the poor formations and really bad subs. thats my view so i'm sure others have theres...

We have to play as a team and support each other and I feel that sometimes the cover isn't there and we really do rely on two or three key players. It's always good to see that we harp back to the good old days in times of an emergency. Life moves on. Currently we are a club that sits in the middle of the league and without extra money we won't move forward. But a simple question is this. If you were ME he brought the club, pumped in money and he must be thinking am I pumping in good money after bad, the fans don't turn up in great numbers and the clubs hasn't made a return in recent years so I would be holding onto the cash and see what happens in the winter transfer window.
The simple fact is Ipswich don't have the money or the crowd to sign big players and the wages have to be kept real. But if you were a player and you were offered to Ipswich would you come here, the crowd is quite and lifeless and small. Not an image of a club going places. not a RK issue it was going down hill beforehand.
Money is tight but if you don't go to games and put money into the clubs then why should ME dip really deep in his... and as someone said he isn't true Ipswich......

We all are. what ever happens we need to support the club. maybe not the manager but the clubs as a whole. The young players are trying there best and thats all you can ask. maybe not good enough in your view but until someone else comes in thats what we have....

So take a few deep breathes and think...am I going to keep moaning with little effect. Or shout my heart out at the next game to support the club we love and adore.

Football has to do with the TEAM. Divide and rule won't work. Did Machiavelli have a great reputation as a football manager? No he didn't. Can you bring in your knackered old mates you used to play with without depressing the hopeful talented young players? No you can't. I ask again. What are his qualifications, level of education, IQ and more importantly psychological balance. What does it take to be a good manager of Ipswich Town? How does Keane qualify on any count? I believe this team has the makings of a good total footballing team which many managers of talent (would O'Neill come?) would be delighted to work with. Now would be a good time, I think.

I left the game when Priskin was subbed...couldn't beleive he took him off to bring on Wickham who hasn't scored yet this season...and hasn't looked like scoring either. All that after taking Townsend off at halftime.
BEWILDERING!!!!! I am no longer on the fence...I firmly believe that Roy Keane will not achieve anything with OUR club.
Please read tihs Simon Clegg and Marcus Evans. I have been giong to Portman Road since the early 60's, and having reached that age now, I would hope that before too long we might have a club with real potential.

Jas0999, I am afraid to say that you are largely clueless in your judgement of me, the majority of Town fans who now want Keane out, and indeed Keane himself.

I agree that there have been positives. At times we have looked better as a team this season than last and we are in a better position than we were this time last year. But for christ's sake place things in context.

This season: - this is a poor league and whilst all is not lost, we certainly don't look like a team capable of promotion (and I dread to think what would happen if we did go up - although clearly that is no reason not to hope we do!). The last bastion of the pro-Keaners - the improvement on last season - is certainly nothing to be proud of.

Recent history: - the Magilton years aside (and excluding the dark days of Duncan and the brief tenure of McGiven), we have long been famed for playing decent football. Unlike fans at other clubs, our fans don't expect success, indeed Mr Keane has seen just how patient we can be (even in the face of the hype, bluster and promises that accompanied his appointment). We are a small town club with a limited fan base and have no divine right to success. We know that. What we do expect is good, entertaining, passing football and at long last it seems that the majority has awoken to the fact that we will seemingly never play good football under RK. His policy of grit and determination over skill and technique is not worthy of our club's history or ethos, or come to that our genuine, loyal supporters.

And yes, perhaps cheering Barnsley was detrimental to our younger players but enough is enough and RK needed to understand what most of us want to see. How anyone can feel it is acceptable (or even tolerable) to be outpassed, outclassed and outwitted by Barnsley is beyond me. The thousands who joined me in my display of irony clearly feel the same way and I would argue that rather than there being no place for me at PR, it is actually the case that those with a limited understanding of what Ipswich Town means as a CLUB that don't deserve their tickets (and I include you in this group). I have had a season ticket for 20 years (I am now 34) and despite having sat through some utter cr*p have never, and will never boo anyone wearing blue. Making a point to an incompetent manager is however an entirely different matter.....

So, to summarise, if you find me worse than yesterday's performance you can always go and support a team that fits your values - I would suggest Bolton, Stoke, Blackburn or some other hoof it and hope team may be about right.

Meekreech

Take your point re Clegg - fair comment. Success to me wouldn't just be where we finish in the league but also how the club is being developed - i.e. long term development of youth players.

For example Tom Eastman would be developing far better playing center half on loan to a lower club rather than being crucified playing as a right back he never will be (on a lighter note he is also in need of some newer pants)

borge - I couldn't have said it better - sums up my feelings exactly.

I would happily wait for years to get promotion if i felt we were maintaining our clubs values and playing quality passing football. I despair of people who think that negative hoofball epitomised by the Keane regime is progress.

Borge - Exactly wat i was thinking. Im 19 so i havent seen the glory days, but growing up in the Burley era and watchin old games with my Dad i know Ipswich is seen as a good footballing club. I came home after that match and watched Norwich and was jelous ( i kinda hate myself for saying it ), they play wonderful football and so did Reading. I dont agree with your Magilton comment tho, before Marcus Evans took over he had a good squad and they played good football, but with great money came great expectations and i feel he felt under pressure to get promotion so he changed style. Our only time we were close to prmotion recently was the season of the takeover with that great home form.

Keane played the same style at Sunderland, sure it worked but the fans were not happy watching it, like im not happy watching it now, even if we win the style stains it. I hear people say its neceary to get promoted, did Newcatle, WBA or Blackpool play the long ball style? Nope. They played good football, Blackpool play excellent football, I WANT PASSING FOOTBALL BACK AT IPSWICH!!!! AHHHH!!!!

Not even the basics are right, Centre Backs play best at CB not RB or LB, the fullbacks are there to support the wingers and get the ball out of defense. Our version of this is to punt it to the fowards as high and as fast as possible, what use is that? What is the point of the midfield? Cos we dont use it, there not there to create chances, they are there to win the ball like Keane. But you need a mix or brawn and skill to have a good midfield. We dont even useour wingers, Townsend played well down the left to try and get some good crossing opportunities, which Colback ( when out on the lefy even tho he's a CM ) doesnt do, then he gets taken off!!!

Ive never liked Keanes style, and could bear it if we won and gained promotion, but its utter garbage to watch, and with players playing out of position with a lack of ambition to go foward, its just utter garbage!!!

It's not been a good week. The football offered up by ITFC has been very poor, perhaps the poorest for some years coming on the back of a number of indifferent performances. What then for the future? It's clear if you care to trawl through the posts on this thread that the concensus is that the Manager has outlived his usefulness.

Pretty much this time last year I suggested that RK was on borrowed time and that he only had a couple of games to save his job. History now clearly shows he survived and even more clearly as recently as the Supporters AGM that a contract extension was in the offing.

Recent form in tabular results show that we lost 3 games, won 3 games, and have now lost 2 more games. Not necessarily terminal for the season. But in all of those 8 games we have not been the vastly superior team and might easily have lost the the 3 won games. If that had been the case we could now be looking at 7 consecutive league defeats and being dumped out of the League Cup by Northampton. To me this is a trend which needs to be be reversed as quickly as possible. The upcoming games offer no comfort. Come Christmas we may well be in a relegation battle.

Much has been made on this thread of the Manager's perceived inadequacies and he frustrates me to death. But as I have said he got away with it last year despite poor results and performances because he did seem to enjoy a degree of popular support. On the evidence of crowd reaction yesterday and this particular thread that popular support may have now run out. He might still enjoy the support of the Executive but that might still prove to be worthless in the long term.

The next week may be very interesting!

meekreech - players changing position probably had more to do with managers noticing something and realising a players potential. I believe we have a centre back who used to play as a full back and was pretty poor there, until he was moved into the middle and now he is quite good.

The fact that RK took longer then Kevin Beatie to spot this is neither here nor there. Its a bit like a scout spotting a lower league player who has the potential to play at a higher level and it coming off.

Im afraid RK'sIT should be no more, and we go back to being called ITFC.
