Keane Disappointed With Defeat
Keane Disappointed With Defeat
Saturday, 13th Nov 2010 18:32

Town manager Roy Keane was understandably disappointed with his side's 3-1 home defeat to Barnsley. In addition to the loss, Mark Kennedy and Luke Hyam damaged their hamstrings and are out of next week’s trip to Hull.

Keane said the game typified how things are at the present time: “Poor result, poor performance, not a great day and a couple more injuries. That’s the way it’s going for us. No sympathy, we’ll look to bounce back next weekend.”

The Portman Road crowd booed their team off and were vocally critical of the substitution of Tamás Priskin, something the Blues boss feels is inevitable when a team is doing poorly: “When you don’t win matches every decision is going to be analysed and criticised, that’s the nature of football.

“They were pretty supportive last year when we went 14 games without a victory - the Watford game I’ll never forget - they were very, very good to us. But at this moment in time, you’re still hoping that fans would understand where we’re at.

“Don’t underestimate the loss of Gareth McAuley, David Norris and Grant Leadbitter. I don’t want to use that as an excuse but they are important players for us. We just have to get on with it.”

Keane explained the thinking behind his substitutions: “We thought we’d get a bit more from Jack and Jake getting a bit more forward. They’re two young players and it’s a big responsibility doing a job in the middle of the park, so with the extra support from Luke we thought we might get back into it.

“But, of course, the next goal changed things and we tried to mix it up again. We tried a few different things and it just didn’t work.”

Keane's controversial decision to withdraw Priskin was amongst those alternative options: “When we took Tamás off we changed it with Connor going up with Ronan and actually I thought they did OK in the last 20 minutes. OK, they’re young players and you could say the game was over.

“Obviously there were a few people disappointed and they probably thought we were going to stick with the one up front, but of course we changed that with Jack coming over to the left and I thought Ronan did quite well and was perhaps unlucky not to score. It was a straight swap in that sense."

Tykes manager Mark Robins was delighted with his players’ display: “It was without doubt the best performance since I became Barnsley manager and it was a continuation of what we saw on Tuesday night against Preston.

“The players took the confidence they gleaned from that game into today. We passed it well, the movement was fantastic and what we added today was our finishing. It's a step in the right direction and pleasing.”

havinit69 - If we were playing entertaining exciting football I'm sure everyone would feel different. When Burley started it took him seasons to get us success and us fans were happy to give him time, because the football was good and we used to enjoy watching the Town. I'm sorry to say but I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a game at PR as a spectacle.
There is no light at the end of the tunnel with Keane which is surprising considering he played under Clough and Ferguson for most of his career......

The comment 'Wake up! Curbishley will never come here!'........
did anyone expect Keane to come here!

Alan Curbishley's agent has stated when doing that review the sports pages type thingy on Sky One on a Sunday morning that Ipswich would be the ideal club for him - after all it would be about rebuilding an entire club and making all the football decisions in the way way he did at Charlton and was not allowed to at West Ham.

Four home defeats this season to teams that I believe we beat last season. That shows the progress. Didn't join in cheering of Barnsley but felt it was a protest against RK rather than team itself.
In my opinion individually there is nothing wrong with the players but the lack of tactics and the players out of position is causing the problem.
Not only do we need recognised full backs pushing on but also a return to "good old fashioned wingers". Can anybody remember the last time someboby got to the by-line and crossed to the middle thereby turning the central defenders . All the balls from wide come in from too far upfield which defenders can see all the way.
We also need a dead ball player who can take free kicks. With GL out yesterday I was hoping someone would step up to the plate but afraid just same old.
We also put ourselves under too much pressure at corners by bringing all 10 back
and giving us no out ball.
The reaction at the sub of TP shows the depth of feeling among the fans which needs sorting out. Mind you it won't be as loud next time as the crowds begin to dwindle away.
I will be there as always though. Things can only get better.COYB

I can't argue with the comments regarding the style of football we play at times. However, i find it hard to believe that if we were playing decent flowing passing football every week and still losing that you'd all be happy with that, I know i wouldn't be.

I think the reality is that we aren't good enough at the minute, I'd like to think that a change of management would change that but I really cant see that it would help (I know most of you will say it cant be any worse etc but thats defeating the point of changing a manager and starting all over again).

How many Town players are good enough to play in the Premiership ? Personally, i'd say McCauly and Norris. Possibly Leadbitter but for the fee I cant say that it has been money well spent.

I know Keane signed the majority of the players, but it just goes to show just what your money gets you in this day and age. All the good players dont want to play outside the Prem and the ones that do want too much money.

Not even Jose Mourinho could get this lot promoted, we are carrying too many ordinary players which equates to us being an ordinary team, which in turn equates to an ordinary season.

I had real high hopes before a ball had been kicked, but now I just realise that we aint good enough, its not Keane, its the players that he has at his disposal. Transfer prices are crazy at the minute, Chopra a prime example. £4m plus for a striker who isn't proven outside of the championship ? - These are the real problems. Its catch 22 and ANY new manager that comes in will have exactly the same problem.

Alan Curbishley would be great, or anyone who can come here to restore the passing game that Ipswich fans are used to. Under Keane we have sacrificed enjoyable football for results, but those results have not improved at all so we lose both ways. Attendances are falling and the atmosphere is dying because the football we are watching is just so poor. Please call a press conference tomorrow Ipswich and announce Keane's departure!

"It was entertaining and good to watch and that's what we're after." - Mark Robbins.

few more games like this with questionable starting line ups and substitutions and i might join the anti keane brigade lol its ok playing boring football and making silly subs if you still get the results..but we have not lately.

i gave keane 3 games to turn things round last year or id want him out to it was later on in the season than this i believe but it was his first year and half excusable he and the team did show progress then.

i now give him 3 more matches to prove progress and that the bad form is just a small blip if the team does not appear together and keane does not appear to have a grip on how to play them then we might aswell cut our losses early and give alan curbishly the rest of the season to organise as if we are still kak in 3 games time and progress is not clear then i very much doubt promotion is achievable and his contract wont be renewed so we may aswell get rid early and give the new manager the time to organise before a first full year

its nice to see that people are now dissapointed with priskin being taken off i did flag him as being a very good prospect when everyone else was treating him harshly.

havinit .. are you telling me that Warnock didn't face the same at Sheffield or Palace a couple of years back or QPR this i.e. struggling sides with "players not good enough" etc?

A couple of canny signings and some TLC and in all three cases he built promotion capable sides.

There are others who have had similar quick success too - Lambert at the Scum, Adkins at Scunny and now Southampton, Owen Coyle etc. etc.

It can be done and Evans should have a go asap before we are all buying tickets to Yeovil and Rochdale next summer.

Someone said to name 5 managers you'd like to see replace Keane. Here are mine (in no particular order):-

- O'Neill (although highly unlikely).
- Curbs (maybe considered unlikely, but we just seem the right sort of club for him. He had his best and happiest years at Charlton which has a similar feel about it, is local, and dont think this is out of the question.
- Driscoll from Donny (dunno much about him but seem to play good footy and we'd be a step up for him).
- Poyet and Tarrico from Brighton - as above.
- Burley (you may say its a step back in time, but its not a step back in quality and progress like under Keane).

And changing your manager doesnt mean a whole season to get them up to speed and the need for wholesale changes - there could even be an instant effect. Although just righting the wrongs that Keane has bought to us, and showing some glimmers of progress would do me.

Said it on another post, but always said give Roy until Christmas and review then. I won't change my mind I'm afraid. Yes there have been downs, the last two games for sure. There have also been positives, but most people chose to totally ignore those which is a shame. As for the berk who said he started the cheering of the opposition but didn't mean it as 'disrespect' - suggest you go away and leave PR. There is simply no need for it. Good grief man - there were numerous youngsters on the pitch - whatever message do you think it gives to them? Do you honestly think your actions helped the TEAM? Personally I find you worse than the woeful performance yesterday.

Your quote that Curbs would have total control as he had at Charlton is way out ! What would SC be doing if that was allowed to happen ? To me the big problem is non - football people ( big business people ) running the club for profit not success ! That is why crowds are falling and the standard of support is going away ! If the club overcharges for admission , as we do , it will also raise prices for refreshments , as we did , making the club , on paper , more profitable but in turn less profitable by driving people away because of the high cost of attendance ! Yes we need to see good ITFC football but that can only come with investment in players which this season has been somewhat lacking ! Yes we have bought Fulop , Scotland and Kennedy but lost so much experience which the youngsters cannot provide ( as hard as they try ) that the results and standards are going to be wayward ( as seen recently ) until the younger players learning curve peaks . My feeling is that if we are in or close to the top 6 on Jan 1st we will go on to reach the play-offs as the young lads will have learnt most of what is needed to be successful and kick on . Changing managers does not mean things will improve and could actually be a whole lot worse !

Havinit69 & Gypo

Go with you both in your posts as you show true support for your team !

Just another little point which seems to have been missed by some of the so called supporters .

Cast your minds back and think of when the Beat and Warkie started in the side , where wre they playing ?
Think hard and remember they started out playing at full back then progressed to CH & MF ( others probably did the same ) so do not get on Tom too much or you will spoil the chances of him following these Town legends !!!

Havinit69, you say you don't think even Mourinho could get this team promoted, yet there are many teams above us in the league with a lot less at their disposal in terms of personnel and finance that are playing much more attractive football and getting results. Keane is proving himself to be tactically inept and I really cannot see him turning around. We have a good enough squad to be in top 6 and under a manager such as Neil Warnock or Dave Jones we would be.
As I have said previously I want Keane to be a success here but I cant see it happening, we may only be 3 points off play-offs but carry on our present form it will be about 12 by xmas and the games will have been mindknumbing and soul destroying to watch. Playing in a team playing as we are will do no good to the young lads coming through. Changing manager does not always improve things in the long term but I think the current poor results/football is due to Keane's tactics and managerial skills rather than the squad not being good enough, in fact they are underperforming now.it comes to the time sometimes when a change just has to be made and I think that time is now

I have never seen so many opinions on one story, and there is still all those to come from workers in front of business computers tomorrow.

The next 3 weeks will be very pivitol for Roy Keane. Loose at carrot and out of cup, it will be goodbye....

Is this the worsed result in ITFC History.
How can anyone with more than one brain cell say this club is moving foward, or rebuilding.
No its sinking into the abess fast. Still we have to give them all a chance.

Magilton's final game, 3-1 against a poor Norwich side who were relagated soon after, how we laughed! Norwich had no money, relagated, with Bryan Gunn as manager. We had money, King Keano and were one of the favourites to go up the following season. Now whats the difference between the two clubs, Norwich are now the better team - why? thats easy they acted fast, got rid of Gunn and found themselves a decent manager, something we are lacking! In two weeks time we will have gone full circle - a stuffing at Norwich with their fans having the last laugh. It should never have come to this - Keane Out!

Just picked up a programme from Nov '80. Price 30p
Admission £1.60 Adults, 80p Kids on the terracing and £3 to sit.

Decent prices to see a decent team, and if I remember correctly, a decent pie.

If only we knew then what was coming.

Shocking performance and no amount of excuses can cover that simple fact up!

I had hoped Keane would be successful here but can't see it happening now. Between them Magilton and Keane have effectively wasted the last fiv years and £20 million because if anybody thinks we are further forward now than we were before these two, think again!

We need a manager with experience and a proven track record - no more well meaning amateurs - and we need him now!!!

1. I hope that someone at the Clegg goes on this site and relays it to people like Clegg etc. (Although I doubt it).

2. I agree with comments on here about a majority of our players perhaps not being premiership quality. But my argument to this would be: Did Ian Holloway have a "premiership quality" side last season? I'm sure if you asked Blackpool fans in August 2009 whether they would be getting promoted they'd have wet themselves.

3. If the club decided to get rid of Keane (Even though it appears maybe not likely) if he's only got 8-9 months left on his contract, its not as a bad of a payout as what we'd have paid for Magilton?

4. I fear that if this continues any longer, we'll be in a position where fans are voicing their opinions during matches a lot, lot more!

5. Keane out.
