Jewell Could Send Youngsters Out on Loan Tuesday, 18th Jan 2011 09:14
New manager Paul Jewell says he’d like some of the younger members of his squad to go out on loan to gain experience in the lower leagues. The Blues boss is spending this week getting to know his players better in training at Playford Road.
Jewell said: “I think the best thing for young players is to go out and play real football somewhere rather than just play academy or reserve football.
“Again, it’s been such a whirlwind that I’ve got to take stock. I’m really pleased we’ve got a free week this week so we can have a right good week on the training ground, get to know the players a bit better and then make decisions as and when.”
Earlier in the season defender Jack Ainsley spent a brief spell with Histon in the Blue Square Bet Premier, while keeper Ian McLoughlin went to Ryman Premier League Lowestoft Town for a month. In November, midfielder or full-back Shane O'Connor turned down a loan switch to Hereford United.
Midfielders Reggie Lambe, Billy Clark, Conor Hourihane, David Cawley and Jamie Griffiths, defender Tom Eastman and striker Ronan Murray all might benefit from games in the lower leagues before the end of the season.
The new manager says he knew most of his squad before he moved to Portman Road, although hadn’t seen the Town side in action prior to taking the job: “The younger lads I’m not sure about. I know most of the players through the game, but I’ve not watched them as a team, only on DVD since I’ve got here.
“I want to have a relationship with the players, I want them to be able to be open and honest. I don’t to ostracise anybody, but everybody has to come in and do their jobs properly and if everyone does their jobs properly, we won’t have a problem.”
Jewell is impressed with the Playford Road Training Centre: “It’s terrific. There’s been an awful lot of money spent on the infrastructure, training facilities and everything like that. The players don’t want for anything as far as that’s concerned. Now the question is can we just add the final ingredient — which is the main thing — which is getting the team right.
“That will take time but almost everything else is in place. We’ve just got to get the team right. There’s a great feeling. I’ve only been here since [last] Sunday night, but people are so passionate about the team and the club. It’s great and they are desperate for success and hopefully over time we can deliver that.
“The Championship is such a tough league to get out of. There are an awful lot of big teams with nice training grounds in this league. I was at one in Derby County, they’ve a fantastic training ground but you’ve got to get things right on the pitch.”

Sending Eastman etc out on loan sounds good, as long as we bring in adequate cover

Without a decent reserve league, it seems the most sensible thing to do.

would have to bring in another striker to let Murray go on loan surely? Think it would help these guys a great deal, from their own points of view as well for those that are never going to make it with Ipswich it will give them the chance to be on view in lower leagues rather then just fading out of the game (Ainsley is a good example, can not see him making it here). What ever happened to Billy Clarke, was flavour of month end of last season not been near the bench since? did he wear the wrong underpants to training? have curry the night before? must have done something Keane disapproved of!

I think you are talking about a different Billy Clark. There have been two at Ipswich in recent times.

yes i always get confused with me 'e'. will have to ask boppit he must know all about 'e's !! I meant the blonde lad who played end of last season and was showing promise (wasnt he quite a creative midfielder with a good eye for a pass?) thatll be why he was dropped if so!

When you look at the back of the match programme our squad list is nearly always longer than the oppositions. But our squad is nearly two thirds youngsters. I think we desperately need more senior players so these lads can go out on loan and are not relied on as cover.

Bluelady You might even be refering to Luke Hyam!!!! Trust a Suffolk side to have 2 David Johnsons , 2 Billy Clark(e)s what ever next/ Two Sir Bobby's....now Those REALLY were the Days

hmm unlike David Johnson though not sure the Clark(e)s will make it as legends! Didnt the first one come from Everton and play for LIverpool (David Johnson?). agreed Luke is also a great player who got dropped for apparantly no reason (then of course got injuries), fit now so hope to see much more of him. A good strong player with an eye for a pass, not sure i would call him a creative midfielder though, think the holding role was fantastic for him

I think if we put in a bid to cash strapped swindon for austin with part of the deal they get murrey for the season will be a good deal for both parties.

Its a good idea to send them out on loan. It won't hurt to get more experience.

The Billy Clarke Bluelady talks about is still at the club, started this season with an injury but is fit now but has not figured as yet this season, incidentally previous Billy Clarke, Holliway took to Blackpool i think and has also been out this season with a bad injury.
