Town Recall Martin From Charlton
Town Recall Martin From Charlton
Tuesday, 18th Jan 2011 16:07

Town have recalled midfielder Lee Martin from his loan spell at Charlton. The 23-year-old was due to remain with the Addicks until the end of the season.

The former Manchester United man made 19 starts and six sub appearances in his half-season at the Valley.

Last week, new manager Paul Jewell said everyone at the club would be given a clean slate, including those currently on spells elsewhere: "I’ll have to take a view on the players who are out on loan, the loan players that we have here and the players that are here full-time. No one’s out of the door, no one’s in the door.”

Strikers Pablo Couñago and Kevin Lisbie remain on loan at Crystal Palace and Millwall respectively. As with Martin, the Blues have a 24-hour recall on Lisbie but matters are more complicated with the Spaniard where his return depends on all three parties - the clubs and the player - agreeing to end his time at Selhurst Park early.

One-time Wimbledon trainee Martin joined the Blues for a fee believed to be in the region of £1.6 million in the summer of 2009 but failed to make an impact in his first season at Portman Road, netting once in 10 starts and eight sub appearances.

The Taunton-born wideman or striker, who had loan spells with Royal Antwerp, Rangers, Stoke, Plymouth, Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest while at Old Trafford, is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2013.

Elsewhere, former Blue Darren Bent has completed his move from Sunderland to Aston Villa for a fee of £18 million rising to £24 million once add-ons have been taken into consideration.

Martin has been far from impressive so far, but as the new gaffer says - clean slate for everyone. So it's win-win really: either he plays well and we have 'gained' a decent LM, or he is poor and we haven't lost anything and he gets shipped out again, either on loan or permanently. As others have said, maybe Keane didn't get the best out of him, but Jewell might.

COYB!

I don't think Keane got the best out of any of the players. Mainly due to the way the team was picked out of a hat each week. Normally a good performance was rewarded with that player being dropped from the squad entirely!! We just need some stability in the squad and encouragement from the manager. Lets be positive and give all the players a chance to prove themselves now that PJ is in charge and hopefully we'll be watching football at the weekends rather than hoofball. COYB.

So we spend £1.6 mill on him, play him for a bit, dont back him when he's playing badly, send him on loan whilst still paying a large chunk of his large wages, when we are severly lacking in creativity and a left sided midfielder.

But other than that theres no need to bring him back . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Lets give the lad a chance then see- players can be unrecognisable with the right manager (e.g Alan Lee) and the skill is in there somewhere if he gets motivated to start earning his oats. Not holding my breath though but hoping to be prooved wrong
