Portsmouth Linked With Norris Move
Portsmouth Linked With Norris Move
Thursday, 20th Jan 2011 00:11

Town skipper David Norris is reported to be the subject of a £250,000 offer from fellow Championship strugglers Portsmouth. Norris is one of the 21 players out of contract at the end of the season.

Last week, the former Plymouth man admitted that if his Town future isn't sorted soon, he could talk to other clubs about contracts for next season, something he is allowed to do with less than six months of his current deal remaining.

The 29-year-old said: “I could be out of work in five months’ time so I have to look after myself. I can talk to other clubs if I want and that is a situation that I have to look at.

“Nobody is naïve enough to think that other clubs are not aware of a player's situation and my agent has been taking a few enquiries.”

Alternatively, the Blues could look to cash in on the Peterborough-born midfielder now if he isn't in new manager Paul Jewell's long-term plans.

Norris, who cost Town a fee believed to be in the region of £2 million when he signed from Plymouth in January 2008, was offered a new two-year contract at the end of last year, but despite the ex-Boston and Bolton man stating that he wants to stay with the Blues, a deal is yet to be completed.

Meanwhile, former Town loanee Jack Colback is claimed to be a loan target of Blackpool. The midfielder returned to Sunderland after his latest loan spell with the Blues was cut short earlier this month.

If he goes for this fee, or even worse for no fee, I think the town fans really need to send the message that Clegg has to go for being so inept in letting this happen, especially with one of our best, and most expensive players.

Think we need to keep hold of Norris has been one of our better players.
We could not replace him for 250k, I would like to think that along with McAuley they will both sign.

Jewell must be given time to look at the players and if these are the players he would like to keep, every effort must be made to keep them, It all depends on what these two players are asking for, they may be asking silly money and long contract. However we can all speculate and you never really know what is going on behind the seanes

That's a derisory amount of money for a player who should've signed a new contract ages ago. Clegg, you need to sort your performance out! If I was as inept as you at my job I'd be in the dole queue....

Unfortunately, we could take an improved offer now (maybe 300,000) and release his wages, - or let him go on a free in 5 months time.
He's worth a lot more, but my concern is that there will be a few people looking at the financial implications and these few people may make the decision.
Does Norris want to move on? McCauley and Norris both appear unsettled.
Would be a great day for Pompey and a sad day for us

As jewell has said any offers that come in will be re-buffed untill he has had time with the squad, so if he does go it will mean he isnt in pj's plans.

If he wants a long contract and his wage demands are excessive, the club wont want to set a precedent that others will then also demand. He's an OK player, but not brilliant - they may believe they can get someone better for around his current wage bill, and be prepared to let him go. It might not look good from the outside, but it might still be good business.

Hopefully PJ will sign up Norris with another contract. If not, then £250k is better than zilcho, which is what we'll get at the end of the season.

The quote that comes from Norris 'I could be out of work in 5 months' does make him sound like the average footballer - THICK!!!

Simple. Sign the 2 year contract on front of you and earn more than you are worth for the next 2 years.

Amazed that some so called football fans on here keep on about him being our best player and must not be sold

Sorry but he has never shown the form he had when he played for Plymouth

He has done very well out of our club. If he wants to go then let him. Same with McAuley.

There is no such thing as loyalty in football anymore - ASK DARREN BENT!

well said muhrensleftfoot and floridaboy
he's simply not good enough. his form for plymouth was much better but hes never matched it here. didn't live up to expectations i'm afraid and if him and mccauley can't be bothered to sign new contracts then they are showing zilch loyalty. rather have healy in the team who WANTS a new contract.
should be looking for players who would rather die for the cause than lose a match, players like eastman who give blood and sweat for our team. my perfect team would be
fulop,
eastman, smith, delaney, o'connor
martin, hyam, carson, peters
murray, scotland
These players give their all for Town and od rather die than lose a game.

If they can't be bothered to sign their new contracts, kick them out of the door! Footballers earn so much anyway, with all the starving people in the world so unacceptable. don't let mccauley or norris kick a ball again until they've signed

Clegg should take the blame for the late contract neg. Norris i understand you want more terms but if you love ipswich and want to play for us you would sign.

Would love to see him stay, I think hes been one of our better players this season.
However, releasing the wages is probably Cleggs plan so that he can afford Chimbonda!!!!

I just cannot work out the maths for transfers. Say he cost 3 million + wages of 12k a week and he is here 3 years , that means the transfer fee over 3 years has cost 13k a week and his wages are on top. he has been offered a 2 year deal and probably wants 3 , aged 30/ not sure. And we get 250k for a player worth surely alot more than that. Does he then as his contract is expiring ask for another 10k ontop of his 12k package ? No . But whould he ask for an extra 5k a week say =17k a week ---surely its worth paying as a replacement might cost 1 mill plus over 3 years etc etc . Free transfers seem bargains ( apart from the extra wages someone might ask for as they have a bargaining tool) and transfers are VERY expensive evena fee like 750k for scotland
