Portsmouth Linked With Norris Move
Portsmouth Linked With Norris Move
Thursday, 20th Jan 2011 00:11

Town skipper David Norris is reported to be the subject of a £250,000 offer from fellow Championship strugglers Portsmouth. Norris is one of the 21 players out of contract at the end of the season.

Last week, the former Plymouth man admitted that if his Town future isn't sorted soon, he could talk to other clubs about contracts for next season, something he is allowed to do with less than six months of his current deal remaining.

The 29-year-old said: “I could be out of work in five months’ time so I have to look after myself. I can talk to other clubs if I want and that is a situation that I have to look at.

“Nobody is naïve enough to think that other clubs are not aware of a player's situation and my agent has been taking a few enquiries.”

Alternatively, the Blues could look to cash in on the Peterborough-born midfielder now if he isn't in new manager Paul Jewell's long-term plans.

Norris, who cost Town a fee believed to be in the region of £2 million when he signed from Plymouth in January 2008, was offered a new two-year contract at the end of last year, but despite the ex-Boston and Bolton man stating that he wants to stay with the Blues, a deal is yet to be completed.

Meanwhile, former Town loanee Jack Colback is claimed to be a loan target of Blackpool. The midfielder returned to Sunderland after his latest loan spell with the Blues was cut short earlier this month.

He say's that he is happy at the club?? If Jewell thinks he figures in his plans then I'm sure a new contract will be sorted out.

If he wants to go then no one can do anything about it! it is not Cleggs fault! I take my hat off to Clegg for standing his ground, Norris is a good tryer but he is NOT worth busting the bank. If the Chimbonda deal happens, apparently he turned down QPR, proving all this about Ipswich being unfashionable is a complete load of tosh!!!

We can sign players now that we have a manager that is not mad and gives players something to play for we will be able to replace Norris with a better player not increase his salary for the same old same old!

Norris and Leadbitter do not work and if we can at least get something for Norris before he goes on a greedy bosman free then do so as long as we have a replacement! (if Chimbonda deal happens then at last a manager who is NOT mad)

The money we don't have a say on, as he could leave for nothing at the end of the season. But surely he has enough sense than to leave us and go to Portsmouth, who could finish up not paying him soon as they head back in administration!

Always thought Norris and Leadbitter are too similar in the middle of the park. Would prefer to have one of the two with a playmaker alongside, having said that would like Norris to stay and say bye bye to leadbitter as now Keane has gone he wont be an automatic choice. As has been pointed out before contracts for players we want to keep should have been sorted in the summer.

Was just gonna say very similar words to u pepperot... u beat me too it,,,;) Too similar to Leadbetter YES... We need a change of direction, although i'd prefer Norris in there to LBetter maybe we will take the money here,,, £250 is only the first offer, u would expect to double that i would imagine which isnt a bad fee for someone with 6 months left on his contract,,,, The fact is the situation shouldnt have been able to arise in the first place.... Norris is replaceable thou in my opinion,,, Big MAC? this is someone who we couldnt replace at this level and every effort should be made by the club to re-sign him,,,,

I like Norris, & believe we should try to keep him, but ultimately it's really now Jewells decision & I'm happy to go with that, yes, he's never quite reached the heights of his performances at Plymouth, but lets bare in mind that for 2 of his seasons he's been playing under a manager who rules by fear, & we haven't had the chance to see the best from him.

Personally, i'd have let Edwards go, & used the money saved from his wages to keep Norris! Finally, lets be realistic here, £250k for a player with less than 5 months on his contract (Who can then walk on a free) isn't such a bad offer is it? as previously said, negotiate Pompey to £300/£350k.This whole situation has come about from Cleggs incompetence.

Actually a reasonable offer given how long he has left on his contract, we'll end up with sweet fa if Clegg doesn't nip this in the bud and get his contract sorted.

What a mess. One of our most expensive assets (but completely average player)is now worth £250k. ME and Clegg (and Keane) are so astute at business that we can now value our whole sqad at roughly £2 million.(excepting Wickham). With all these players able to talk to other clubs we'll soon see who is 100%committed to ITFC or who has just bee picking up their wages. Norris will be in the latter.

I would not read too much into this as Portsmouth do not have a brass farthing so how can they pay £250K for Norris who will demand higher wages than he is on here. They could not afford to renew Brown and Hughes contracts so how can they afford Norris. To me Portsmouth F.C. are a joke and should not have been allowed to get away with what they have. Norris would be a fool to go to that place anyway - the ground is the pits.

overall i've been disappointed with Chuck. he's had long injuries and his form has been indifferent for a player that was supposed to be worth £3m!
When ne was made captian and started off the season so well i thought he was back to his best but his goals have dried up and he seems less effective. Maybe PJ will assess and consider if he's good enough and therefore offer better deal or sell if there's a better player out there, like Colbeck. At his age he'll be wanting 3 year deal or good 2 year. If he really wants to stay then he'll sign but he's got to step up to retain his position.

Absolutely no chance at that price.

I disagree with all the comments about his lack of effort etc. Always works hard for the team, was a vocal presence against Arsenal and the only player who bothered to chase lost causes when we were losing to the budgies.

People have to understand that in June, Norris could leave the club for NOTHING. In fact he could even agree terms with another club now. So 250K for a player out of contract in the summer is better than nothing. Sad, but true. If Norris won't sign a new contract then the club will probably cash in on a player who cost around 2.45M under Jim. Same applies to all of the other 21 players out of contract.

Or is it his agent trying to get his client a January move?

blue_em_away added 12:00 - Jan 20
Bye chuck....

I said when Magic signed him and still say it...... 2 mil for that, get real.

He was worth 1 mil tops when we signed him. 250k we should take. He's probably on loads of money too.

Why would he jump out of the fire and into the Portsmouth frying pan - he wouldn't, but he might go for a club further up the league
