Burnley Emerge as Town's Main Rivals for Austin Friday, 28th Jan 2011 09:43
Burnley have emerged as Town’s main rivals for the signature of Swindon striker Charlie Austin with the Robins having accepted an offer from the Clarets for the highly-rated frontman. The Blues have so far been unable to agree personal terms with the 21-year-old, who was locked in talks at Portman Road yesterday after the clubs agreed a fee believed to be approaching £2 million.
The Blues are understood to have offered Austin a three-and-a-half-year deal but are yet to match the terms required by the former Poole striker.
Now Burnley have matched Town’s bid to Swindon and have been given permission to speak to the former Poole frontman with talks taking place at Turf Moor today.
Blackpool and Southampton have also expressed an interest in the one-time bricklayer but have not yet had offers accepted by the Robins.
Austin knows new Burnley boss Eddie Howe well having come close to joining his former club Bournemouth before he joined for Swindon. The Cherries were unable to complete his signing as they had a transfer embargo in place at the time and he moved to the County Ground instead.
However, Austin is believed to want to remain in this south if possible and a switch to Town is understood to appeal, if he can agree terms.

If he is having talks with Burnley today then he must be confident that they will give him what he wants otherwise why make the journey for a lesser offer?

Howe is manager at burnley and was only stopped from taking him from non league due to an embargo. I am told the two of them get on very well. It looks like burnley is where he is going, promotion is a real possibility for them. Again we have all this crap about building a team for the premiership, but not willing to pay for it.More loanees??
trueblue added 10:06 - Jan 28
he would be mad not to talk to burnley, but i feel he will come here if he want to progress up the leagues, we are far better set up and have the means to pay what he wants, lets get the deal done and see the good times back

I think we should increase our wage structure. Not just to get better players. BUT the fact that the price of fuel, living and tax and all that has gone up, so players won't be making as much by coming to us as they would in the past.

It's ok some of you on here saying it's not SC/ME's faults but this is not the first time we have failed to secure a player when sitting in PR!, RK had Derry sitting there waiting to sign & Clegg couldn't do the deal, we seem to miss out on player afetr player. IF ME is serious about mounting a challenge for promotion then surely you've got to push the boat out to secure the services of those capable of doing the job, even more so when we've failed to secure Norris & Macauley!! we won't have a bloody team to put out the way we're going!!

Clegg if you f*ck this up please f*ck off. You are not a football man. If you can't do the deals to help are club and are new manager you have to leave. I for one will be shouting your name out from the stands. Useless tool.

He must be asking for a lot if we can sign prem players like scotland?
oldbluestu added 10:12 - Jan 28
If he wants too much money move on, it's not as if he is a Premeirship player. Sounds like another agent demanding too much money again, this Club is bigger than that

I don't understand why we continue to allow Clegg to do the negotiations when David Sheepshanks (who actually loves the club and is still part of the board) has so much more experienced and we always got our man when he was chairman, whether they were good signing or not he sold the club with his love of the club, staff, players and most importantly fans. Get him in and he will sell the club to Austin.

It's not just Cleggs fault, would you choose to join a club in a relegation battle with several senior players about to jump ship? It's better for Ipswich to struggle on with the current ball kickers and avoid the drop and start again next season. January sales are a waste of time. You either end up paying over the odds for an unproven yougster or taking a gamble on a crocked has been.

Surco72 added 10:25 - Jan 28
lets not get all excited if we dont get the deal done ,in reality he is a good young prospect but not proven at our level ,no different to Rhodes . The last striker we signed from Swindon who had scored goals for fun couldnt make the grade at championship level and we have goals in Priskin,WIckham and Scotland if they are given service which Jewells team selection seems to suggest so far

Perhaps Keane was right. Clegg really is the weakest link.

. . . I'll expand. Surco72 has it spot on here. He's not proven above Div1. Demanding wages approaching those of Fulop and I'd expect in excess of what Chuck and Macca are wanting. Whilst I agree that Clegg has been the 'weakest link' since he joined, in this instance I'd hold my ground. Wickham, Priskin, Murray and Scotland if he stays!

Was it not reported we had offer him 12k a week and a 3 and a half year deal If thats correct then Clegg cant be blamed for not getting the deal done,The club cant be held to ransom by players and agents. Like I said if correct as I am not sure how people know what the deal is less than 24 hours after we have talked to him
gibborocks added 10:36 - Jan 28
This just proves to me Cleggs incompetence, and how the team are not important to him. Rather than throw himself in and do what he can to help the club, he is happy to sit back let good young players go due to the fact that all he cares about are his own wages and bonuses. Not interested in what helps the team on the pitch, he is interested in himself. P*** off and destroy another club Clegg.
