Jewell Happy With Edwards at Right-Back Friday, 4th Feb 2011 15:33
Town boss Paul Jewell says Carlos Edwards is currently his best option at right-back. The Trinidadian has played much of his football on the wing in recent years having taken a more defensive role earlier in his career and for his national side.
Jewell said: “Carlos has played there. I remember watching him a long time ago for Wrexham playing at wing-back and I know he’s played there for Trinidad.
“At the moment he’s our best option. Jaime did very well against Arsenal in the first leg, but I can see he’s not really a natural right-back, as Carlos isn’t, truth be known.
“He’s a good athlete and he’s done OK in there. We’re trying to teach him a little bit more about playing at right-back as it’s a bit strange to him, but at the moment he’s doing OK.”
Meanwhile, Jewell says that while loan signing Jimmy Bullard is a great presence in the dressing room, his footballing ability was the main reason he brought him in: “I think first and foremost it’s most important that you can play.
“If I brought Coco the Clown in he’d probably liven the dressing room up, but he wouldn’t be able to play. That’s not to say I’m comparing Jimmy with Coco the Clown, I wouldn’t do that to Coco the Clown!
“I think it’s important that you’re able to produce on the pitch. Jimmy’s a bubbly character. I worked with him at Wigan and, as I said before, he could probably get up, play golf to scratch, train in the morning, go fishing and play a game of football at night.
“He will have an influence on the pitch, that’s the most important thing. He loves his football and he enjoys it. He’s not a quiet character. It’s quite a quiet dressing room really.”

Massive fan of Jewell. Massive fan of Bullard. Massive fan of Coco. Really not sure about Edwards at right back though. Obviously he's got real ability going forward, but Derby's goal on Tuesday resulted from him being well out of position. He's not up to it defensively, and frankly why would you expect him to be? Not blaming Jewell though; he didn't get rid of Wright, Rosenior etc, and it's not his fault Zuiverloon was recalled (although I think the jury was still out on him anyway).

Keano, McParland & now PJ has commented on our "quiet" dressing room, so Bullard will be almost as good in the dressing room, winding them up, as he is on the pitch. We need some proper characters it seems. Like the stories we heard in the past about Terry Butcher kicking in dressing room doors and shouting used to get the team hyped up before they went out onto the pitch.. Ah good old days

i'm getting a bit concrened about the future of jamie peters, poor geezer he must feel he has gone back to square one.all that time it took to get in the team now he's gone must be now a month without a game.i think our attacks are at times too predictable, we need a change of pace for the likes of priskin ,scotland and wickham, they can all hold the ball up, but when they need to see a runner its usually norris,or they get caught in possesion! players like bullrd look for runners so we need to oblige and get peters up front somewhere...ps,whats pj trying to do to us playing edwards at right back, heartattack material watching him trying to skin players in his own box!!!hope he's a quick learner...l8rs peeps

Totally agree with Jewell re Peters 'I can see he isn't really a natural right back' - at last! 'as Carlos isn't truth be known' - YES! Does beg the question why we didn't sign a right back.

Just one quality right back and then all we need is young Carroll to nod in the amazing service coming from our 2 new-comers. So. Just 2 players needed now and settle the contracts BEFORE the play-offs

St Ledger is certainly not a right back and would be no better in that position than Peters or Edwards. We need a recognised right back not square pegs in round holes as would be the case with St. Ledger.

"at the moment" We will be getting a wingback in the emergency loan window. Still need a striker and Norita is still available. Says he would love to play for Ipswich as his dad lives there. ME cough up the money and speak to Barcelona

Surely Jaime Peters has done very little wrong at RB and Carlos Edwards is way to attack minded and forgetful of his defensive duties, plus Jaime is for the future where Carlos is at the wrong end of his career. If truth be known neither are a right back in the Wilnis/Wright mould so buying one would be better still
