Jewell: Dyer Always Set to Be a Sub At Burnley
Jewell: Dyer Always Set to Be a Sub At Burnley
Monday, 4th Apr 2011 09:11

Blues boss Paul Jewell says he was always planning to use Kieron Dyer from the bench at Burnley. The on-loan West Ham man, who has one game remaining of his one-month spell, came on as a 79th minute sub as the Blues defeated the Clarets 2-1 at Turf Moor on Saturday.

The former England man missed the Scunthorpe game a fortnight ago with a thigh problem and the Town manager decided to stick with the side that won that match, aside from suspended midfielder Lee Martin: “He was never going to start, he was always going to be on the bench.

“He trained on Thursday and Friday but I thought the team that I started with would be our best bet - we got a decent result against Scunthorpe. It’s well known that he’s missed a lot of training and that we have to be careful with him."

As for Dyer’s future beyond Saturday’s home game with Crystal Palace, Jewell says no decisions have yet been made: “We’ll speak about that next week.”

The Blues boss also expects news on the situations of some of the out of contract players later this week.

Dyer's terms at West Ham are up at the end of the season and the midfielder has hinted that he could be interested in a longer term return to his home town club in the summer.

Always been a fan of Kieron's but too injury prone for me and so would not want to risk anything other than a "pay as you play" deal as money could be spent better elsewhere. I have to say though on his day he is unstoppable.

Too injury prone, a great player in his day but sadly he never had ennough of "those days".

He's just a shadow of his former self at the moment. If he could do a pre-season and get fit, what a great addition, but it's one helluva risk on anything other than a pay as you play deal. If I was ME, I wouldn't risk my money on a normal contract.

I'd concentrate more on securing Mr Bullard's signature over Dyer's. He has given a lot more to the team and seems to be more reliable on the injury front. Once Bullard has been signed, I would personally only attempt to sign Dyer on either a yearly rolling contract or as quite a lot of you have said... a pay as you play deal only.

Difference between Dyer and Bullard when it comes to injuries is Dyer is from the Michael Owen school of a niggle here, hamstring there and seems to constantly be battling with injuries. Bullard has had 2 horrific injuries which are purely down to bad luck and could have happened to anyone. I think a fit Dyer would be massively valuable at this level next season and if we can get a deal to make that work then great because he really is a cut above the Healy, Martin and Norris's of this world. The key of course is the word 'fit'.

Unless West Ham are letting us have him for free, there is not a lot of point in spending more money on Dyer this season as his injury problems seem to be continuing. It would be a big risk to sign him permanently. A pay as you play deal sounds good, but I am not sure whether players ever really accept these. The injury risk could be factored into a normal wage, e.g. pay him £6K instead of 12K a week due to his injury record. It's all about what the player will accept I suppose, and depends on what other offers he gets.

I too would prioritise Bullard over Dyer, but Bullard has two years of a £45K contract left whereas Dyer will be a free agent. I don't want us spending silly money on Bullard. The £45K contract is Hull's problem, not ours.

Time for us to forget about Kieron and move on. Prefer to remember the good times - not his injury prone second stint!

Never thought he'd be that good now he's 32, umpteen injuries and lost his legs - why do you think a team near the bottom of the Premiership sends him out on loan!!

Could Mr Jewell be playing a game here dont let West Ham think he about ready first team action and give us him for another month. If so whats the odds on a Dyer hatrick against the Budgies

There once was an old crock called Dyer
Who tried to set Town's world on fire
His skills are dire
His injuries are dire
And the time West Ham paid Town to take him off their hands and stop him sitting there on the bench doing bugger all and drawing a fat salary and irritating everyone at the club is virtually up and he's dire!

Last line needs a bit of work.

And the other four.

Basil :- Couldn't agree more [ not about the last line, its fine as it is ]. Dyer was alright on his day, except his day is a Thursday and we play on a Saturday ! In the short time of his return, he has proved he's lost it [ how long did he play before pulling the old thigh niggle routine ? ] Best remembered in the past.

Dyer was awful when he came on at Burnley, his touch was terrible!
It was no surprise that his head was down at the final whistle and was the first player down the tunnel. He didn't shake hands with anybody and neither did he look up at the Town fans ,even though we had won the match having played very well!!

send him back a waste of space and money, come on you cannot say his 83k a week for sitting on the bench at west ham is worth it?

No room for sentimentality, but we do owe Kieron as he was pretty badly crocked (shins I think) when he originally left us. I can remember him having to play for us with quite bad injuries and he has never been 100% since.
