Ellington Confirms Town Move
Ellington Confirms Town Move
Tuesday, 21st Jun 2011 10:21

Nathan Ellington has confirmed that he is joining Town today, subject to a medical. TWTD reported earlier that the former Watford and Wigan man was back at the club this morning having previously been at Portman Road for talks last Monday.

Ellington tweeted: “I’m signing for Ipswich today, subject to medical. Should be an Ipswich player by end [after]noon!”

The 29-year-old, who played for Paul Jewell at Wigan, finished last season on loan at Preston, where he scored two goals in seven starts and 11 sub appearances.

The relegated Lilywhites were understood to be keen to sign him on a permanent basis after his release by Watford at the end of the season, however, the Bradford-born frontman ruled out a return to the Lancastrians in a tweet over the weekend: “Won't be going back to Deepdale, I'm afraid. Things were bit complicated for the club which meant it couldn't happen.”

The 5ft 10in tall striker started his career with Walton and Hersham before moving on to Bristol Rovers. Jewell took him to Wigan for £1.2 million in March 2002 where he scored 67 goals in 139 starts and seven sub appearances largely playing alongside Jason Roberts, before moving on to West Brom for £3 million fee in August 2005.

Since signing for Watford for £3.25 million in August 2007, the Bradford-born striker has spent time on loan at Derby County, during Jewell’s spell there as manager, and in Greece with Skoda Xanthi.

Ellington is set to be unveiled at a press conference this afternoon.

I dont comment veru often but some people have really peed me of today with the negative comments and the bloke hasn't even kicked a ball for us yet. FFS will people stop moaning at every piggin signing we get. Give them the chance to prove themselves before you whine on and on. There has been some decent comments on here giving praise and support then out come the whiners and moaners like a bad smell, just because he is on a free and not cost millions doesn't mean he will be rubbish let the man prove his worth.

Personally I think we have a very decent strike force for this league and should be up there in the top 6. PJ seems to know what hes doing so trust in him folks

yh I agree stop moaning ur all silly praise the player he on a free so PJ will get 1 good costly player & most on free. Ellington is good scored 2 cracking goal on fifa 11 so I can't wait to see him play. This is best team we had since 2004-5 hope more good signings will come. If you wanna moan then don't bother comming on TWTD & do something elce

Tbh I wasn't jumping for joy when I read this, but I reckon he'll be good for a couple cheeky goals off the bench and trust PJ's judgement as he has worked with him before.
Starting to wonder what happened to that other bid we made for another striker? Seems like we failed there and decided to move on.... Either way, think this acts as a signal that Wickham is to stay as otherwise we would be splashing out on strikers like Maynard etc.
Good Luck Nathan, prove the whingers wrong!

Apologies for stating the fact that our purchases so far have been on a strikeforce that absolutely no other club wanted. Ellington?? Do me a favour !!! Do I really have to say anything about "Duke"??

Chopra has too much baggage and that is demonstrated by the following. NOBODY else wanted him, not even Cardiff and that is why he came here. When faced with nobody who wants you vs Ipswich - which one do you pick?? Cardiff got rid for nothing as Sunderland got the 1.5m fee so that speaks volumes to me.

I continue to await a signing to excite me.

Either you trust the manager or you don't, I am sure PJ knows Ellington and knows how to get the best out of him, personally I am glad we are not spending loads of money on signings as hopefully it means we are not spending the fee from CW and that he is going to stay.
Welcome Duke, prove all the doubters wrong.

Not good enough for Watford, how can he be a good signing for us. Shocking, faith in PJ waning daily.

Who do you want Town to buy then Whoppit?

Shall we dip into the Millions of pounds that is available to us and buy a 6-7million pound striker? No, as according to the Papers we already have one of those, I see these signings as a Backup for Conner and if we did go out and spend that sort of money for a guy who might sit on the bench more often than not then surely you will get the 'Why did we spend all that money on a bench warmer' So i guess your just kind of person who will never be pleased?

Also,
Has it ever accured to you that we moved quickly and got in before other clubs had the chance? whats to say that a deal hadn't already been done for these two before it became to public? you'll always get the roumers but it might just be a good bit of business.

adding to the squad with proven players at this level and still having a kitty to buy others is always a positive for me, were we not saying last year that one or two injuries and we would be struggling to field a first 11? not this year my friend. I'm Sure Paul has everything under control and we needn't worry about all the negativity.....

All these commnets about he did not do good here, and he was not good enough for Watford so why will he be here.....not every player fits into a team structure and the players around them....if they did players would not be transferred around all the time as teams look for improvement and replacements.
As for those saying we are getting what nobody else wants, Cardiff wanted to keep Chopra the same as they wanted to keep Chris Burke, but the financial situation did not help them.
Alot of teams also have not started making moves, kudos to PJ and SC for making moves early before other teams start working through the changes they are going to make. (oh thats right most people on her prefer to bitch that we don;t do anything and miss out on players and now do something and bitch as we get players before they hit the market of others.....)

whoppit: your comments were easily ignored by me as soon as you suggested that a 29 year old striker is over the hill. Utterly ridiculous comment.

His career has been on the wane but we know he was once very good so I suggest we reserve judgement until, oh I don't know, maybe until we've actually seen him play for God's sake.

As for Chopra, Cardiff are in massive financial trouble (as proven by the fact they still owed all that money to Sunderland). £1.5M for a proven Championship striker is excellent business on paper.

It amazes me that some on here have managed to make it look like bad business.

I though all the negativity would go once Keane and his dire football left (at least then we had actual things to moan about), but no it seems that sonme on here just want to moan, without any actual reason to do so. Pathetic.

Im guessing the moaners on here are armchair fans who do not attend many/if any games at all during the season! But admittidly everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Why are people giving Ellington such a hard time before he has even kicked a football for us. I have said it before and I will say it again......Alan Lee and Jon Stead had poor goal scoring records for their previous clubs before joining us. Ok they didnt set the world alight when here, but they scored more than the crock we had last season. Give the man a chance before you give him a hard time!

Have faith in Jewell - judge him and the team after the first 10 or so games into the season.....not now before pre-season has even begun!

29 isn't past it. Not many seasons left, but definitely not past it.

Just to prove a point, Jason Scotland was 29 when he was banging goals in for fun at Swansea. Given the opportunity I bet we would all have taken him at that age so lets give Ellington a chance and see what he can do under PJ.

guys you need to understand whoppit gets off on being negative and then people taking the bait, ask him the last time he was at PR seeing a game, i think you will find a very long time ago. ignore him and like a bad smell he will go away...
