Town to Receive Rhodes Windfall?
Town to Receive Rhodes Windfall?
Saturday, 25th Jun 2011 09:47

Town could be set for a windfall with Crystal Palace confirming their interest in former striker Jordan Rhodes. The Blues agreed a sell-on clause as part of the controversial deal which took the frontman, now 21, to Huddersfield for £850,000 in July 2009.

Palace assistant boss Lennie Lawrence has confirmed that Rhodes is on his club’s summer wish-list: "Jordan Rhodes is on the radar, but it won't be until we get back from holiday that I will find out how much that has been brought forward. We are still looking at him and there might possibly be a deal."

The precise size of Town’s sell-on has never been revealed but former boss Roy Keane said the club were “well provided for by sell-on clauses” when talking about the deal in November 2009. That may suggest it’s somewhere around 20% of any profit the Terriers make on the striker, the son of former Blues keeper-coach Andy.

Millwall have also been linked, with Huddersfield chief executive Nigel Clibbens determined to get a significant fee “well north of seven figures” for the Oldham-born frontman, who cost the Blues £5,000 from Barnsley’s academy when he followed his father to Suffolk in March 2005.

Last season Rhodes, who recently won his first Scotland U21 cap, scored 22 goals in all competitions having netted 23 times in his first season at the Galpharm Stadium.

If they're selling him to impoverished Palace, don't expect much of a sell-on profit!

Worth a punt?? If we offer 1.5M, we'll get 20% of the extra 650K anyway???

If we get a bit of cash from Swansea for Priskin's loan and Huddersfield for Rhodes' sell-on then that is a small bonus from two of Keane's very worst decisions in his time as manager here. I doubt a sell on to Palace would generate much though and we would have the added annoyance of potentially seeing Rhodes to well in the Championship and possibly scoring against us at some point!

Palace fan here, great site you have here. With all the ex Town players we have and or get linked to I often find myself reading this site, so thought I'd give me 2 pence.

Rhodes looks a great 'fox in the box' type. Why was he let go from Town?

Btw, Garvan is available, in case you want him back? Please take him back!

Rhodes was sold because we had a clueless manager. Scored at every level since an embryo and continues to do so. Was never given a chance under Keane, would love to have him back here.

Welcome dougster.

Rhodes should never have been sold in the first place..if we'd had a manager with any sense at the time he would've sent him out on a season long loan at the very most - Rhodes has scored almost 50 goals in 2 seasons - very much a fox in the box - something we lacked badly last season.

Why aren't we in for him? I don't really care about the fact that we let him go but the possiblitiy of a proven goalscorer on the cheap in the mould that PJ seems to be after seems to be an obvious choice.

Plus the fact we get sell sell on means we'll get him cheaper, if it's good enough for Pearce and pompey it's good enough for us.

If some of the tosh talked on this site were even 10% true then Crystal Palace would have been promoted not nearly relegated last year - the way people (including me) went on about Garvan and Pablo. Roy Keane was a bad manager for Ipswich, but none of the players that he got rid of have gone on to set the world alight except possibly Rhodes and he was a division lower. I suspect Rhodes will go on to be one of the top Championship goal scorers, but i thought Garvan and Pablo were good too.
If I may be allowed to indulge in some tosh psychology on the basis of no evidence just rumour... like the rest do on this site (but without the apology) it may be that Roy Keanes strength was his discipline, he got to be a great player because of it and a some talent. He liked to sign disciplined players and fighters in his mould. He disliked players for whom it all came too easily and distrusted talent. He got rid of players who did not work hard ... and susrprise surprise they did not do much elsewhere because without application talent does not count for much. But he signed players who lacked creativity and talent so we end up with combative but unimaginative players in a team that is quiet and industrious but lacks characters.
Rhodes has talent. He was sold young so he probably did not have the chance to prove one way or the other whether he had application, but being the son of the sacked goal keeping coach he was got rid of because he made Roy uncomfortable.
I think Rhodes has only slightly less chance of being the next ex Ipswich England striker as Wickham at this point in time and I think he would be a good buy, but there may be too much water under the bridge for us to buy him.

Just re-read my own post and mould should be mold. I was talking the thing that makes copies not the thing that grows in student fridges. The rest of the typos are just typos.

Tractorog - you were right with "mould" in the first place - same spelling, two different meanings.
I was given to understand that at the time that Rhodes was let go, regardless of who did it and what personal relationships there were, there was a view that we could not go forward with both Rhodes and Wickham as we did not have a strong enough squad otherwise. The favoured candidate for the future was Wickham, being younger and arguably with more potential, and hence Rhodes left at what was quite a high price for a League One side to pay. So without the benefit of hindsight it was not a totally unreasonable decision at the time.
As to whether it would be right to take Rhodes back, I was interested to note that Rhodes spent the last seven or eight games of the season on the bench for Huddersfield, and stopped featuring among the goalscorers. The "must play" man during the season, and consistent goalscorer was the ever-popular Gary Roberts; should we have him back instead?

I was under the impression that Rhodes was sold for two reasons:

1. As jas1972 points out, the club were making cuts to the wage bill and it was deemed we could not progress with two (then) untried youngsters - particularly as Roy wanted to recruit a more senior striker. The club decided therefore to keep Wickham and sold Rhodes. The later is now worth around £1.5M, whilst the former could be sold for £10M-£15M. Overall therefore a good choice.

2. Jim Magilton fell out with and had a massive bust up with Rhodes senior, which ultimately led to him being sacked. It was no coincidence therefore that young Jordan was also sold. I doubt because of this there is any chance that Rhodes would want to return to Ipswich as I believe he also had a training ground fall out with Mr. Magilton as well. Probably not happy memories for the lad.

We must move on from Jordan Rhodes and look to the future. Rhodes MAY turn out to be excellent at Championship level. But he may also not make the grade - as many have tried and failed in the past. Best of luck to the guy though as I really hope he makes it.

jas0999. Rhodes never wanted to leave Ipswich, despite the problem re his father. I also know that he would love to come back given the chance.

Unless he was lying to me.

I must admit to being in the camp that was suprised by his sale, but I understand the reasons we have heard about his departure. Whether or not he should return at this present time, I honestly don't know.

Both Rhodes & Roberts are doing well, but one League below our level. Rhodes may not prove to be a Championship goalscorer - remember Sam Parkin?

You are so right itfc. Rhodes and Sharp would have been the dream ticket up front. Chopra is a poor alternative to Sharp, and as for Ellington......

jas0999 - The club were making wage cuts when Keane came in? Was that really the case when Keane spent millions on Martin, Leadbitter, Delaney, Priskin & Edwards.

Not sure how Rhodes would have held Wickham back either as Keane either didn't have much chance to play Wickham due to lots of niggling little injuries or held him back David Moyes style (Ala Rooney). The last time I heard of clubs getting rid of players for potentially holding back start youngsters were Sharpe for Giggs (wise move!) at Man Utd and to a lesser extent Dozzell for Dyer at Town and those were triggered by booze.

We have lacked a goalscorer since Darren Bent and I believe any goal scorer would be worth his weight in our squad (Kevin Phillips is a freebie!). Hindsight is a wonderful thing as previously stated and there are no guarantee's but I would love to see Rhodes back at Town.

And a new Centre Half wouldn't go a miss.....

> the club were making cuts to the wage bill and it was deemed we could not progress with two (then) untried youngsters

Deemed by whom? I can't believe Rhodes or Wickham's wages were much at all then, and a drop in the ocean compared to Keane's Premier League buys. This club has always believed in its youth policy and I don't believe there was any pressure on Keane to sell our youngsters, especially a striker who had just scored 7 goals in 14 games on loan at Brentford!
