Indian Striker Wants Chopra to Join Him
Indian Striker Wants Chopra to Join Him

Indian international striker Sunil Chhetri has called on Blues frontman Michael Chopra to renew his interest in playing for the country of his father’s birth. The 27-year-old discussed acquiring an Indian passport in order to qualify for India late last year ahead of January’s Asian Cup but the talks ultimately came to nothing.

Chhetri said: "I wish he had come, it depends on him, the federation and his agent. I'm not sure what the issue is. The first time I met him he still had England ambitions but now he wants to represent India.

“He's a fantastic individual with experience in the top divisions. I wish he could come and share his knowledge with us."

Newcastle-born Chopra previously played international football for the England U15s, U16s, U17s, U19s, U20s and U21s.

From a selfish point of view as a town fan, it wouldnt be good if he was jetting round the globe for internationals and people may laugh at this, but who knows he may still get that england break in his career I mean if Jay boothroyd got that chance why not?
I maybe tempting fate but if billy sharps value is £3.25 mill or whatever it is, £1.25 for Chopra really COULD be a snip!
Must admit very impressed with pj dealings/signings so far.
He is demonstrating why the club went for him, he's a very streetwise manager and knows how to get out of this league when provided with some funding signing players who hit the level required whilst perhaps not necessarily signing players that get fans excited. I think fans need to stay patient, he will sign more players and, more importantly, the RIGHT players at the RIGHT price.

It's amazing how racist some of the reactions are. Change India with, say, Brazil and see how different the reactions are.

I don't think it would his reputation or bank balance any harm, but certainly could drop us in the jolly old doggy-dodah should he, firstly be away from town [ a long way ] and then come back jet lagged. But that's just me being selfish.

MarcusSG, don't think it's racist to say they wouldn't be happy for a British born player to switch alliegance to a nation which could ultimately mean he won't be arriving back from international breaks the night of a match. However, I do think Churchmans was undeniably racist.

Marcus - 'Racist' are you sure?

The difference is Chopra has obv not shown any great desire to play for India before now, if he had he would walk into the team. It is not his country of birth.

Playing for Brazil is more of an honour, and in doing so you would challenge for international honours. People may be being elilest, but not racist.

Rather than saying swap india for brazil. I think its more comparable to say the reaction would be the same if Mali, Oman or Qatar came calling.... or even Wales!!

Please dont try to make it a race issue. Very poor form.

MarcusSg> It's amazing how racist some of the reactions are ...

Uh? In the three comments preceding yours, I don't see any racist remarks.

Tractorboy24> MarcusSG, don't think it's racist to say they wouldn't be happy for a British born player to switch alliegance ...

But MarcusSG didn't say any such thing!

Tractorboy24> I do think Churchmans was undeniably racist.

There is no comment from Churchmans on this topic!

Have I slipped into a parallel universe and don't see what everyone else does? Am I going mad? Or are all the commenters going mad? Is this an elaborate joke to make me think I'm going mad?

Further to some of the comments above, I removed an earlier post and banned a poster.

Ah, so MarcusSG was making a valid point based on an earlier post that we hadnt seen?

Apologies Marcus if this is the caes, looks like the removal of the post changed the context of your own post.

I think the post was after MarcusSG's post, but I could be mistaken.

Phil,
Perhaps rather than removing a comment completely, you could replace the text with something like "Comment removed by moderator". This would leave the rest of the comments in context and avoid confusion.

Yes, it was the deleted comment that was the tipping point for my comment. As with Chopra my father is from India and I'd consider it an honour to represent India if I was able to and not in a position to represent England. If I was a cricket player I might select India first... Not really out of loyalty but because it would irritate Norman Tebbit.

As far as travel time we've had players from the Americas and even Australia and New Zealand, which are much further. With events like the Asian federations cup in January there are concerns of a mid-season absence that would need to be addressed.

Bet Evans is rubbing his hands at this prospect. With a population of 1.2 billion and football gaining an ever-growing popularity having Chopra as the Country's best player could certainly help us shift a few shirts!!!

Travelling aside (and I think we all understand the issues of international call-ups several hours flight away, etc, etc), I think this could be a great opportunity for both Michael and ITFC, and also the wider scope of ITFC. And even football itself.

If he goes for it, it will show that great ambition and hunger are still inside him - excellent factors which could give him a real buzz, and fire him up still further for us at club level.

Furthermore, Ipswich has a great ethnic Indian component - it'd be so cool to get them all involved with football and hijack their usual (unhealthy) obsession with cricket.

I really, really hope he goes for it.

Good luck, Chops!
