Jewell: Disappointed But Not Too Downcast
Jewell: Disappointed But Not Too Downcast
Saturday, 13th Aug 2011 18:02

Blues boss Paul Jewell was disappointed with Town’s 1-0 home defeat to Hull City but just as he wasn’t getting carried away after last week’s 3-0 win at Bristol City, he wasn’t too downcast.

Jewell said: “There weren’t that many chances in the game. They’ve come away from home and done a job on us really.

“They changed their formation and stifled us. We’ve had maybe a chance with Lee Martin, but at home you expect more than just two or three chances.

“It’s disappointing from my point of view, but we weren’t getting carried away last week and we’re not too disappointed this week.”

The Town manager was particularly unhappy with the way his defence was caught out for the goal: “We’ve got the ball on the edge of their box and one ball later it’s in the back of our net. It’s hugely disappointing.

“I said at half-time we’ve got to get used to getting draws. I know that sounds stupid but it’s always win or lose with us, we don’t get enough draws.

“If we don’t win games we’ve got to make sure we’re dogged. We could have been sitting here with four points. We wouldn’t have been happy but at least we would have got something out of the game.

“It was just the type of counter-attacking goal we were talking about last season. Very disappointing.”

Moving on to his continuing attempts to add to his squad, Jewell wouldn’t be drawn on whether his central defensive target was Stoke’s Ryan Shotton and revealed the Blues are also awaiting the outcome of a second bid: “As I’ve said before, there are lots of clubs in for the same players. We’ve got two bids in actually and I’m surprised they haven’t come out.

“Premier League teams are waiting to see what they can get in before. It’s a frustrating time and I can’t tell you any more than I told you on Thursday.

“I’ve spoken to lots of managers about players and I wouldn’t like anyone commenting on my players, so I have to respect them.”

The Blues boss confirmed that Liverpool's Daniel Ayala was a target: “We were in for Ayala, he’s obviously going to Norwich, to a Premier League team, so that’s what you’re up against.

"The type of player we’re looking for, all the Championship teams and even some Premier League teams are looking at as well.”

Jewell played down reports that Leeds want to take Tamás Priskin on loan and Ibrahima Sonko’s comment that he “could meet with my friend Ívar [Ingimarsson] again soon” in a recent tweet: “He might be going to dinner with him!”

Hull boss Nigel Pearson said finally winning after two successive home defeats came as a relief: “Absolutely. Before we took the field today, I know we’re only two games in, but there was big pressure

"I was really pleased, not just with the result but how we played was really positive.”

It was Hull's first win at Portman Road in 21 years, and only their second ever.

First half we looked good but the same old story we could not score and take advantage, second half Hull came out with the attitude that they were going to get something out of this, and they did, after Hull scored I looked up at Marcus Evans and he held his head in his hands with disbelief, it was worse than Paul Jewells phone bill.
Southampton tues. are not going to be a pushover either.!!!!!!

You may not be downcast Mr Jewell but I certainly am and I suspect many others are as well. We have now lost 2 out of three games (a) we should never have put a weak side out against Northampton thus avoiding negativity within the camp and with supporters (b)Today has shown how far off we are from being a promotion challenging side with at least three more players required if not four. ( c) Today we had only 18000 at the match which will be even less on Tuesday and for the forseeable future unless the pricing structure is changed. (d) Jimmy Bullard was the main reason we stayed up last season and unless creativity is found from somewhere and also some pace a la Brady today, this season could be much the same as the last few. What a difference a week makes.

8 new signing but still the same old sh*t. If we can see the problems from the stands, suerly PJ can.
Two up front, please.

Hope we sign Shotton and the offer for a player that has been put on the table is for Delaney.
Smith and Delaney,
Spells out SAD- and our defence WAS sad.
Abysmal, and simply not acceptable.

Very disapointing display by this team.pj was right hull done a job on them, they better get used to this as every team coming down here will do the same.we simply had no answer to their tackics, nobody to unlock the oppos defence.the midfield totally ineffective, ball just going over their heads.didn't notice bowyer was in the team until subbed!emmanual-thomas looked unfit, martin was playing like he did when keane was in charge,no confidence, felt sorry for chopra, needs help.a lot of work for pj this week to perk them up and to get more players in as we need em now!

We need 3 new defenders asap- 2 new cbs and a rb to let Edwards stream forward.
Send Delaney out on-loan and make Smith fight for his place.
Priskin out on loan 2.

The problem is the tactics. Chopra doesn't play up front on his own. 4-4-2 please against Soton. Leave JET on the bench, & play Chpra with Ellington or Priskin

First half we seemed ok with some good chances...though I doubted we would dominate with only one up front and JET in and out of the game. We looked better when Carson came on, but need a target man to support Chopra and a dominant fit stopper at the back. Still...a long way to go as yet...and tiem to convert to 4-4-2 at home...hopefully!

............ excellent start to the season !!!!!! - perhaps some of you delusional people will now see how pathetic the whole picture looks.
Chopra, as I predicted before, will soon get pi##ed off with these tactics - and who can blame him ??

......... MANAGER - have we got one ?? - of a kind I guess, but not the right one based on present squad, tactics, and some of his almost weird comments / statements.

You could put 22 up front but if you have no creativity and make no chances then you will get nothing, Martin, Delaney, Smith, Ellington, Priskin, Scotland, the list is endless, we were rubbish last season until |Bullard came and we were the same today, we lack pace all over the pitch and only have 1 striker who has any idea where the goal is, how many chances did we create, virtually none and we were the home side, worrying times.

...... did someone once say we wouldn't miss McAuley ?? - without him Delaney is LOST. Not a bit surprised either, that that is the case.

Cresswell was by far the standout performer, thought he was absolutely class at left back, he has a sweet left foot which came very close once in the first half and once at the end from around 40 yards, looks a very shrewd signing. JET looked very lazy but could be unplayable when on form.
Chopra looks like the player we've been missing for years, chasing loose balls all over the park and never giving up on balls, stockdale also looks like a future England number 1. However everyone else looked very average today and hopefully we will be back on Tuesday night.
Oh and just one last thing, the Hull fans were singing very proudly, "you can shove your ******* bullard up your arse." come on Paul, they don't want him so sign him up,

Oh dear, new season same paceless and unimaginative performance.
Stockdale looked decent with the little he had to do. centre backs oh my god Delaney cant pass 10 foot and spent most the match on the deck. Smith - just not up to it. Cresswell came away with credit. Edwards makes himself look better than what he is with his pace, often out of position and relies on pace to recover. Midfield - JET woeful and I mean woeful. Martin very poor, centre midfield lacked pace and ability to get forward to support Chopra with any effect. No one in there who can open the door. Chopra will require much better service if he is going to net a decent return.

@alex12345, totally agree. Cresswell had a great game, Stockdale solid and Chopra showed some really positive signs. JET was a bit of a let down but that may be position.

It is the same at home all over again! Why don't we just go at teams with two up front Jet was very poor and lazy on the wing only thing he did which was anygood was one fantastic crossfield pass. We lacked creativity in midfield all three centre mids are too similar and Andrews didn't look any different when coming on. We are crying out for yes Jimmy Bullard he demands the ball he uses it so well and his love of the game is infectious.
We are at home for crying out loud and playing against a very average Hull team, yes I know we have nearly a whole new team but only Cresswell really impressed me I thought he was fantastic both attacking and in defence. I felt very soory for Chopra you can tell the guy is class but he needs support we either sign another striker or we use Jet alongside him. Delaney and Smith are clowns no footballing brains between them every time they had the ball I was having kittens. We are crying out for more pace and more creativity. As for the atmosphere no wonder we have such cr*p home record being at home is supposed to be an advantage the twelth man I sit in North stand and that is supposed to be where the atmosphere is. It is pathetic heard more noise in a library.

H32 I was out having a life. Poor today, tactics wrong, two games into season I'm not following you to deep depression, life is to short and the season too long.

F#ck me! What a miserable bunch. No one expected us to go to Bristol on the first day and win by that margin, but we did! We were far from great today, particularly second half, but Hull are no mugs and not a bad side- incase some didn't know we will not win every game. They were organized which is always key for me, we weren't as we have a makeshift centre back partnership playing at the moment plus the hapless Leadbitter which speaks for itself. We all know we are in desperate need of a defender or two and PJ is doing all he can to look for them, like he said he's been looking and bidding for them all summer but to no avail so far.

Even though there wasn't a lot of creation today what I was impressed with was the spraying of the ball to opposite flanks due to the wingers who as of when PJ came now hugging the touchline as proper wingers should ( I could have told you that but Keane didn't have enough brain cells to realise it).

Im as unhappy as anyone to lost a football match but I'm not going to suddenly start saying we're favourites for relegation, just like I wasn't saying the opposite thus time last week.

At the end of the day if you lose a game chances are you havnt played terribly well, we lost today and in fairness we did play some good stuff at times and the biggest plus is Cresswell gets better with every game. People just need to realize we will lose games.

Last point. How many people have said and will say we should have stuck two upfront today, and how many of the same people were saying before the game, "we shouldn't change a team that won 0-3 at Bristol last week".

Well said Garv certain posters actually thrive when we loose, they know who they are!! What depressing lives some people live, leicester with their millions spent got tonked today, it happens, at times we were woeful at others we showed signs of a good team, need belief consistency, two new cbs and a creative midfieldler!

ncharles added 22:21 - Aug 13
Hardly saw a pass all game. Perhaps not surprising when this is one of the first games that they have played together. Delaney was not good enough, we probably need two new CBs.

First half we started slowly but looked capable like we would score and were creating chances without looking convincing.

Second half Hull changed their play, began to believe in themselves and took control of midfield.

In the last 15 minutes we brought on Andrews, Carson and Ellington and began to make progress and lifted the crowd. If that was 442 then that is what we needed from the start.

The passing should improve as they play together more often but at home we need someone else alonside or behing Chopra before he loses his way.

4411 with JET behind Chopra and Carson and Martin on the wings.

Wonderful motivation - "You can't win this boys so make sure you don't lose" - no wonder we were luck lustre in the second half"

Have just seen the Hull goal on youtube
75 Min where was the 2nd defender? after PJ had told them at half time to keep it tight for a draw
Smith should have just held Fryatt up and shown him down the side line, he did not even make him work hard for the goal We need one if not two centrehalfs

town 4-1-4-1 formation at home!!!

keeper - very good
creswell - very good
edwards - good
delaney - ok
smith - out of his depth
bowyer - ran out of steam
leadbitter - one corner in 3 reached its destination
kenndy - ok, andrews no better
JET - useless today, carson did more in 20 mins than he did in 70
Martin - couldn't beat our old no2
chopra - totally on his own, balls fired at him at 8ft in the air, same useless idea as last year when scotland was isolated
ellington - poor, no better than scotland
