Town Face Tribunal Over Cresswell
Town Face Tribunal Over Cresswell
Tuesday, 16th Aug 2011 08:24

Town manager Paul Jewell has revealed that the Blues and Tranmere are set to go to a tribunal after the clubs were unable to come to an agreement regarding compensation for left-back Aaron Cresswell. The 21-year-old was out of contract at the end of last season but the League One side are entitled to cash because he is under 24.

The Blues have made a number of offers to Rovers both before and after Cresswell confirmed his move to Portman Road on July 1st but without an agreement being reached.

Speaking at yesterday’s press conference, Jewell was trying to play Cresswell’s abilities down: “We’re going to a tribunal, so I don’t want to big him up too much, but I think Cressy’s going to be a good player for us.

“Actually, I better not say too much because Tranmere will take cuttings to the tribunal. I think he’s been very poor since he’s been here, he’s got no pace and his left foot is terrible!”

More seriously, Jewell says the Liverpool-born defender has done well: “It’s a big step up for Cressy but he’s got better every day.

“I think at first he was a little bit edgy but he’s getting better and better and I think people can see the qualities he can bring to the team over a long period of time.”

The Football League’s tribunal procedure is run by the Professional Football Compensation Committee (PFCC).

What ever Tranmere get Im sure it will be a fair price (400-600k). Actually tribunals have favored us in the past.

Any one remember Tony Vaughan, the young CB we had back in the mid 90's. Man City were forced to shell out about 1.5mil after a tribunal (of which sheepshanks was on the panel). He was a decent prospect and touted as the next Alan Hansen but he was a very average player!! hehehe

I like PJ and his banter/ little comments! Clearly a manager who doesn't take life too seriously!

Re: Cresswell - thought he looked really good on Saturday and to be honest I don't think Tranmere ever had any intention of agreeing a fee with town. They know he is a good player and want to milk as much money as they can and I guess they think the best way to do it is via tribunal! I would imagine they will get more than we were offering even once their legal fees have been taken into account.

I actually think he takes its very seriously. I just think he knows how to play the press to keep them onside. . . . .

Been a quality signing so far - whatever the tribunal fee is he will be worth a lot more in a year or so's time

He's been quality from the start and goes to show tthat there are good palyers in the lower leagues capable of stepping up. PJ has wasted too much time chasing hasbeens plus i dont feel that our scouts are doing a great job. We should focusing on div 1 & 2 players that either win "player of the year awards" or those who have knack of scoring goals. For a start i'd be lookin at Colchester's Vincent (very quick) or Southend's Ryan Hall (big and knows here the net is). i know we've had flops in the past but it's worth the gamble.

Clegg unable to agree another deal then. He only managed to negotiate one fee over the Summer - JET. When Chopra signed, Clegg was on holiday.

Clegg, Evans and Jewell all need to improve in the next two week's and sign some players - not has been, injury-prone freebies, but good quality permanent players.

8ashblue :- Agree. For the cost involved its well worth the gamble. Cresswell being a prime example of a gamble that will surely pay divideds.

jas0999 - Whilst we are in the Championship our revenue is very low in comparison to the Premiership. ME has given Jewell some cash to spend above the income from tickets & TV and he has decided to invest that money in salary rather than transfer fees. Good players cost £xm fee + £xm in wages / contract. ME is generous but to a point. You have to cut your cloth accordingly. I think Clegg/Evans/Jewell all doing a good job but we are up against similarly ambitious clubs and clubs with the added help of parachute payments.

So Jas just because Clegg was on holiday you think he had nothing to do with the deal, and had nothing to do with it before he left for holiday? Plus you do realise 'freebie' signings also have to be negotiated don't you? By the way would you have moaned if Chopra had been a 'freebie'?

*shakes head*

guess he's the reason we letting O'Connor go......? Personally, I would have liked to have seen both on the left, going forward and covering one another!

Cresswell is good going forward, but really needs to learn how to defend. You don't put any pressure on the attackers if you're standing 10 yards away from them. Hopefully he'll be better as time goes...

He's also the best defender we have got, therefore he gets moved to left midfield last night! What it does prove is that there is young, british talent in the lower leagues, stop trying to borrow a centre half from a premiership club and start looking at buying one from the Football League.
