Sonko Deal Close
Sonko Deal Close
Wednesday, 24th Aug 2011 15:37

Trialist Ibrahima Sonko is understood to be close to joining the Blues on a one-year deal having impressed in yesterday's behind-closed-doors reserves friendly against Colchester. TWTD was first to reveal that the 30-year-old Senegalese international was on trial at Portman Road.

The former Reading and Stoke man is set to become Town's ninth signing of the summer today or probably tomorrow and would appear certain to make his debut in Saturday's home game against Leeds.

Tweeting yesterday, Sonko felt he had put in a decent performance against the U's: “Game went well. Now I do not know what's going to happen, we can just wait and cross fingers that everyone [is] happy like I am.”

It was another of Sonko's tweets a fortnight ago which first revealed the possibility of him moving to Town: "It looks like I could meet with my friend Ívar [Ingimarsson] again soon instead [of rejoining Reading].”

Born in Bignona, Senegal but having moved to France as a baby, Sonko began his career with Town’s old UEFA Cup foes St Etienne, moving on to Grenoble, where he made his first senior appearances, in 1999.

Three years later he joined Brentford, the 6ft 3in tall defender spending two seasons at Griffin Park before joining Reading on a Bosman in 2004.

Capped four times by Senegal, scoring one goal, Sonko, whose cousin is Arsenal's Bacary Sagna, became a cult hero at the Madejski Stadium and acquired the nickname ‘Superman’ for his exceptional leaping ability as he helped Steve Coppell’s side into the Premier League.

Stoke paid an initial £2 million for his services in August 2008 but his time at the Britannia Stadium was less successful. Loans at Hull City and Portsmouth followed, before he was released at the end of last season.

Sonko rejoined Reading on trial this summer and played in a number of pre-season games but talks broke down, with his old club only willing to offer a deal which equated to a 90% pay cut with the player only willing to take a drop of 75%.

My mate is a Stoke season ticket holder and he says Stoke fans are in firm agreement that he is one of the worst CB's they have ever had. They call him Agent Sonko, in as much that every club they sent him to he took down.

I like Sonko, hopefully him and Delaney will be adequate enough for Saturday!

At least we'll win the stuff in the air, need Delaney replaced though and Bullard back!

And maybe a rightback and why not get Andros Townsend back?

Bad for Stoke might well be good for us! I'd hope that we'd try and get one more CB and let Delaney, Sonko and Ingi be competition for the other place.

Yes, good stop gap. But please, let's get some genuine defensive talent in. Still need an RB and another CB

He hardly ever played for Stoke. Look at his record at Hull.... in the team that went down. Also, he didn't seem to be able to get into Pompey's side last year, which speaks volumes!

Sonko signed for Midlands-based club Stoke City for a fee of £2 million, which could rise £2.25 million depending on appearances, on 29 August 2008.Ibrahima made his Stoke City Debut on 14 September 2008 in a 3—2 defeat to Everton

On 1 September 2009 Sonko joined Hull City on a season-long loan deal. Sonko made his debut for Hull on the 12 September 2009, in a 4—1 loss away to Sunderland. Sonko then went on loan at Portsmouth and made his debut in a 2-0 defeat away to Coventry on the 7th of August 2010. He scored his first goal for Portsmouth against Nottingham Forest on 30 October 2010.

After an unsuccessful time at Stoke he was released at the end of the 2010—11 season.

I disagree. It's like any player we need to see him in action at our club not what so called other supporters from other clubs say. Plus it's down to the system the manager wants to play and at Stoke maybe their style of hoof ball didn't suit him. Got to be better than Smith and Del boy.

great! Any centre half is a good centre half considering the current state our defence is in.

Could well be a liability. Reading have just signed Kaspars Gorkss from QPR - an infinitely better defender

Don't worry about comments by the Stoke fans...some of them think that he is still on Stoke's payroll. How's that for being informed?

Let's face it this is a necessary stop-gap panic acquisition...but if he can prove himself the job is surely his to keep.

He didn't play much for Portsmouth because they had too many loan players! He's been in limbo for a while but he's only 30 and hell keen!
