Jewell: Leeds Will Feel Hard Done By
Jewell: Leeds Will Feel Hard Done By
Saturday, 27th Aug 2011 18:49

Blues boss Paul Jewell admitted that Leeds will have felt hard done by after Town’s 2-1 victory at Portman Road. Jason Scotland and Keith Andrews netted late goals for the Blues after the visitors had been reduced to 10 men.

Jewell said: “Let’s have it right, Leeds are a good team and they outplayed us in the first half, we’ve got to say that.

“When you’ve lost by five and seven it doesn’t matter what you say, the players are edgy, very, very nervous and on the back foot.

“It’s difficult when you’ve just been humiliated. I saw Leeds last week at West Ham and they were excellent and they should have won.

“They will feel a little bit hard done by. Last week, we didn’t deserve any luck, let’s get that right, but we had three or four decisions that went against us.

“Today we had a couple that went our way and a deflection. Nothing’s all rosy in the garden, we know we’ve got a lot of work to do. But tonight’s not a night to analyse it, it’s just a night to go ‘thank Christ for that!’."

The Blues boss had praise for sub Jason Scotland: “He came back and has worked hard in pre-season. When I was naming the subs today I looked at his record against Leeds and he’s got a decent record against them from when he was at Swansea. So, I stuck him on the bench and he scored one and made one.”

Leeds boss Simon Grayson was unhappy with the decision which led to Aidy White being sent off for a foul on Jay Emmanuel-Thomas but Jewell felt there was no argument: “I just said to Larry [Simon Grayson] that if he’s the last man then he has to go. Larry seems to think it might have been a nudge but a nudge isn’t a foul.

“One’s 6ft 3 and the other kid’s 5ft 7. He lives round the corner from me in Leeds and is a friend of my kids! He’s a lovely kid as well.

“I was more interested in getting a penalty than getting the lad sent off. But once he’s last man and he brings him down, he’s got to go.”

The Town manager did agree with Grayson that Leeds should have been awarded a spotkick when Carlos Edwards fouled Max Gradel just before the Blues' winner: “I didn’t have a great view but it looked a penalty to me. I asked Carlos after the game and he said it was 50-50 which probably tells me all I need to know.”

Whites boss Simon Grayson thought the match hinged on the red card: “I think the whole game changed on the sending off decision. I thought in the first half we were outstanding.

“An Ipswich team which has been put together with some internationals and has cost a lot of money never created a chance against us.”

Grayson is considering an appeal as he feels Aidy White was fouled first: “I’ve seen it, and people might differ with me, but it’s a freekick on Aidy White to start with.

“He and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas are running through, Emmanuel-Thomas has nudged him in the back and he’s fallen over, which is why Aidy’s brought him down. That changed the game because we weren’t in any danger of losing that match today.”

Grayson also felt his side should have been given a spotkick: “Max Gradel could have had a penalty on another day. If it was a freekick outside the box we would have got it, inside it isn’t given.

“I’m not here to slaughter the referee but decisions can change the complexion of games and the whole result of games.”

Was at the game today. First half JET was terrible, Leadbitter anonymous. In fact the midfield went AWOL. Delaney and Sonko reverted to long balls so the midfield couldn't give the ball away. Awful, we should have been behind by more.

On the positive side, Chopra and Murphy never stopped running and Sonko got really stuck in.

Second half Bullard got the midfield working and Carson provided some much needed aggression. We got what we deserved with the win but more confidence needed for the future.

pmason, wtf, we have just had one of the worst weeks I can ever remember, why dont you let the real fans get on with enjoying a victory at home, my god it's been a long time coming, maybe it's time for you to crawl back under your rock

Agree with others, shud up Mason, Leeds aren't a crap team.

4 problems line-up wise today for me were, Edwards at right back, Delaney, Kennedy in a midfield 4 and leadbitter on the left and in general! Sort these four equations out and yes, i reckon we'll be challenging.

If it's true Shotton and Collins are being looked at then this will solve our problems.

Leadbitter must have played his last game now. Everyone can see Bullard, Bowyer, Andrews and even Kennedy are above him in the pecking order. Edwards has to play right midfield. Not a good enough full back.

Me and my dad had a perfect view of the penalty incident, and Carlos got the ball way before he made contact with Gradel. Definitely not a penalty.

Itravelled up from oxfordshire this morning for the match and I am really happy that we won but we didnt play at all ,Leeds were better than us simple and if not for 2 good saves from Stockdale, the 2nd one hit him in the chest but he had "Schmichael Jumped" to spread himself, we could have been 3 down, different team once Leadboots had been substituted, Bullard came to the central defence looking for the ball and we looked a different team, cant see Leadboots starting for a while, Sonko played well and was impressed with Cresswell, in the 2nd half we improved 100% cracking shot from Scotland and about time we had some luck for the winner.
Just one complaint Atmosphere was rubbish in the first half, since the ground has been redeveloped we have effectively 4 family stands, where have the harcore Churchmans and North Stand fans gone I can remember from my childhood in the 80's and early 90's?
Still onwards and Upwards remember Keep on Swimming!!!

...and the jury is still out for me on JET. He's not a midfielder that's for sure!

agree with most posts that Leadbitter has got to go asap. The match got better when he was taken off.Chopra and Murphy look like they can work well as a front two.Jet looks to me atm to be a complete waste of £1m.

Oh dear Simon Grayson what a bad loser you are ! You can complain all you want about penalty decisions but as they say they even themselves out over a season. Don't forget we had one given against us last week that was well outside the area and I do not recall anyone having too much sympathy for us.
Thought Murphy made a big difference today and nice to see a defender who is prepared to clear the ball. At least tonight's beer tastes better than last week.

Yes, completely agree PJ - we were lucky today - but this was an important win. First half we were abysmal and were outplayed - without the sending off PJ would IMO been suffering yet another defeat. But that's football - we had some luck and the win is all that matters. However, will need to be able to compete with teams with 11 players. Today we didn't.

Get off pmason's back, this was not a good game.

yes it was exciting but Leeds definately had the first half and should have been more than one goal ahead.

Town did not start playing until the ineffectual Leadbitter went off. One plyer destined to leave the club and the sooner the better for me.

JET was also less than average although it was his strength that brought the foul and the sending off, and that changedb the game.

Messiah Jimmy lifted the crowd which in turn lifted the team, his influence probably won us the game.

All credit to scotland who made the goal himself, got the ball to feet turned the defender and got hisnshot on target. More than Chopra did all match although to be fair I do not remember a pass that went to his feet. How long before he gets peed off about the lack of service?

Sonko had a no nonsense game, jst what we need ij defence. My man of the match. Murphy did well and will only get better. Carson added pace something which a Town side has missed for many a year. I would playb him instead of JET.

Gradel clearly had not done his homework on D'Urso. If he had he would almost certainly have got a penalty for Edwards challenge. The fact that he fell to the floor every time a Town player brushed against him, obviously worked aginst him.

No one said it was a good game Bergholt. It was dire but an important win. Hopefully now we're at the international break, the team (hopefully with two more additions) can train hard together so we can start to find some rhythm and continuity in the side.

Considering the half time scores against Southampton and Peterborough this was a good result. I didn't think that Leeds should have a penalty and I was pretty close.

This statement about could or should have lost, if,if Leeds didn't get a man sent off is totally irrelevant and makes no sense. One could argue that if there was no foul JET would have scored. Anyway who knows.

The facts.

1 we didn't play well as a team
2 Sonko made a difference at centre half
3 Murphy worked hard and showed he has the class at this level
4 the balance is not right in midfield. JET and Leadbutter are not working in their positions
5 and most important we got three points. Not playing well and getting results is a good habit
6 after last Saturday why would we moan about 3 points?

We all know we could do better, but Leeds are not rubbish, and at the end of the season how we won this game will be a distance memory except for the 3 points and the 3 goals which make a difference to the league table.

Be happy that we go into the two week break on a positive and it gives us a platform to build on. If by the end on November it hasn't got any better performance wise then that's the time to get on PJs back. Teams take time to build - if it was that easy, chairman would sack all the mangers and run the team via the playstation!

That will be a massive confidence boost for everyone. Felt good to leave PR With a win but we also saw some fight and spirit as well which is fantastic. Sonko was superb very solid which is promising. If we can play the way we did in the second half for most of the season we wont go far wrong. COYB

I know why pmason is unhappy. It's coz his team canary shi**y lost!!. Seriously though, I listened to the whole match on radio suffolk, and with the likes of Gradel and Snodgrass, we were always gonna be second to Leeds.

I also agree, Leg Biter has got to go. If PJ can offload him and 'Forest Lee' Martin Gump most of the main damage that RK did will be undone. RK was seriously bad at assessing the value of players.

It was never going to be about the performance today, just the result. Coming back from 1 down under the current circumstances took balls, even against ten men. 2 points off the play-offs after our painful start to the season actually doesn't feel too bad. Another CB and RB and a fit and up for it Bowyer, and we we will be right up there. We'll look back at the Soton and PBoro games come April and no doubt have a chuckle.

I'm sorry, but sone on here think we got luck form D'urso?, when exactly?, he didn't make the decision on the sending off it was the lino.............he is incapable of making big decisions, bottled the leeds penalty and watched from 5 yards as players were shoved int he back by leeds centre backs and gave free kicks when leeds dived. What a pratt.

Well I think the boys in blue shoew some real bollix today. Two disasters, the fans and press on their back, Leeds coming to town, and going a goal down, to come bak at 'em and win is pretty good going.

Thought Scotland was excellent when he came on. PJ's comments seem a bit pro- Leeds ... wouldn't hear Wenger admit any of that ... he just wouldn't have seen it! It looked a red card (and a definite penalty) from where i was ... bit annoyed at how long it took our bench / trainer to realise JET had a genuine problem and needed to come off! But all in all, a brilliant result and enough of the negativity now!! Let's build on this result!! Please!!

End of the line for Leadbitter. Can't remember the last time he was subbed, if ever. He had a run of very bad games for RK but was never subbed, he has at last been found out - taken long enough!!

Sonka - head and shoulders above the others, Murphy strong performance, Bullard started in his usual fashion taking hold of the game in mid-field. Will change the way we play through midfield when he is fully fit.

All we need is another CH (to replace Delaney, a shadow now that Mac has gone) and a RB to replace Edwards who will never make RB. Fine going forward, but his defending leaves a lot to be desired.

Good win and only 2 pts off the playoffs!!!!!!!

My god, some of our fans are so stupid, go support norwich or colchester u muppets. Yes, were not great today, we are not barcelona. But we got a result with a group of players who hardly know each other. I also sensed a team spirit forming which is what we need. Yes we had some lucky breaks, but we had none last week, if we did would have lost 2 nil. So, to all you cretins who still wnt to slag the team after they have won, go do one.
