Jewell: Leeds Will Feel Hard Done By
Jewell: Leeds Will Feel Hard Done By
Saturday, 27th Aug 2011 18:49

Blues boss Paul Jewell admitted that Leeds will have felt hard done by after Town’s 2-1 victory at Portman Road. Jason Scotland and Keith Andrews netted late goals for the Blues after the visitors had been reduced to 10 men.

Jewell said: “Let’s have it right, Leeds are a good team and they outplayed us in the first half, we’ve got to say that.

“When you’ve lost by five and seven it doesn’t matter what you say, the players are edgy, very, very nervous and on the back foot.

“It’s difficult when you’ve just been humiliated. I saw Leeds last week at West Ham and they were excellent and they should have won.

“They will feel a little bit hard done by. Last week, we didn’t deserve any luck, let’s get that right, but we had three or four decisions that went against us.

“Today we had a couple that went our way and a deflection. Nothing’s all rosy in the garden, we know we’ve got a lot of work to do. But tonight’s not a night to analyse it, it’s just a night to go ‘thank Christ for that!’."

The Blues boss had praise for sub Jason Scotland: “He came back and has worked hard in pre-season. When I was naming the subs today I looked at his record against Leeds and he’s got a decent record against them from when he was at Swansea. So, I stuck him on the bench and he scored one and made one.”

Leeds boss Simon Grayson was unhappy with the decision which led to Aidy White being sent off for a foul on Jay Emmanuel-Thomas but Jewell felt there was no argument: “I just said to Larry [Simon Grayson] that if he’s the last man then he has to go. Larry seems to think it might have been a nudge but a nudge isn’t a foul.

“One’s 6ft 3 and the other kid’s 5ft 7. He lives round the corner from me in Leeds and is a friend of my kids! He’s a lovely kid as well.

“I was more interested in getting a penalty than getting the lad sent off. But once he’s last man and he brings him down, he’s got to go.”

The Town manager did agree with Grayson that Leeds should have been awarded a spotkick when Carlos Edwards fouled Max Gradel just before the Blues' winner: “I didn’t have a great view but it looked a penalty to me. I asked Carlos after the game and he said it was 50-50 which probably tells me all I need to know.”

Whites boss Simon Grayson thought the match hinged on the red card: “I think the whole game changed on the sending off decision. I thought in the first half we were outstanding.

“An Ipswich team which has been put together with some internationals and has cost a lot of money never created a chance against us.”

Grayson is considering an appeal as he feels Aidy White was fouled first: “I’ve seen it, and people might differ with me, but it’s a freekick on Aidy White to start with.

“He and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas are running through, Emmanuel-Thomas has nudged him in the back and he’s fallen over, which is why Aidy’s brought him down. That changed the game because we weren’t in any danger of losing that match today.”

Grayson also felt his side should have been given a spotkick: “Max Gradel could have had a penalty on another day. If it was a freekick outside the box we would have got it, inside it isn’t given.

“I’m not here to slaughter the referee but decisions can change the complexion of games and the whole result of games.”

Well done Town, great 3 points.
From seing the highlights on tv, it looked like carlos was out of position for the leeds goal, not his fault as he is a winger, but we do need a specialist right back in there.
It also sounded like on soccer saturday, that after JET was brought down and the red card, that leadbitter hit a pretty pathetic free kick into the wall.
Lets hope portsmouth come back in for him before deadline day.
I'm pleased for jason scotland, and even though he scored a great goal, his lay off for andrews' goal was class, and provides optimism of a good link between midfield and attack which has been missing for a couple seasons.
I'm also a bit angry at graysons swipe at us being a side full of internationals and costing a lot of money. The only money we have spent has been on JET, chopra and cresswell. Loans are stockdale, andrews and murphy, and free transfers ingarmarsson, bowyer, sonko, ellington and bullard.
Our manager has just been better in the transfer market and his chairman is a stingy lunatic.

Listening on the Internet, it didn't sound as if we were wholly convincing, and, of course, you always should be able to beat a team of 10 men, but the point is, it still had to be done, and that against a team who are no mugs. To come back from a goal down, however we did it, is good enough for me at the moment. Sure, much more needs to be done: a more settled team, better wing play rather than hoof it up from the middle, more chances created, and an even stronger back line would help, but this doesn't happen in a day. Very big three points yesterday!

a win is a win 3 points, BUT if we had been 3 down at half time then it would not have been an unfair score line.
Still many problems and the new signings to date have not solved them another CB and more urgently a right back. Edwards is a liabilty we can not afford.

I couldnt care less how badly we performed, if we got help from the ref, if luck was on our side or if the other team give us a win as long as we get 3 points! Grayson - off you go! If you actually looked at the starting line up that played for us you would realise that in actual fact it doesnt cost that much to assemble! Now we have a 2 week gap where the transfer window closes, we get a RB and another CB in and its a chance to really gel as a team and push on after the terrible and disinterested international break. Come on town what a difference a week makes, onwards and upwards!

p.s whats the difference between norwich and a triangle?? A triangle has 3 points! Old but a classic why not!

RB has to be the highest priority and get our aged soldiers off the physios bench and on the park (iggy and bower)

Murphy, Bullard, Sonko all Free - 3 Points and pi55ing off Dirty Leeds - Priceless.

I stick with my comments. A terrible game against a crap leeds team who would have beat us had they retained 11 on the field.
Jewell has a whole new team and they are significantly worse than magilton and keanes teams. I dont recall either of those managers teams conceeding 13 goals in 3 games, a new jewell low to add to his repertoire of lows.

For me the positive has to be the fighting spirit we showed, after the debacle at peteborough when very few showed any passion, it was a differant story yesterday! Delaneys punch as he left the pitch showed how much it meant. I thought he looked much better paired with the man mountain...!!! Clearly confidence low first half understandable after the week we've had, but proud of the never say die attitude that won the game, leadbitter aside!

i felt hard done by last week but at least we got 3 points.

I know that we're technically ok for strikers now, but I see that Reading have signed Adam Le Fondre from Rotherham for a mere £3050k. That could be the signing of the season as he's only 24. Bit aggrieved that we didn't have a go there...

Ssshh Mason. Boring now.

Leeds will be top 8, Magilton and Keane's sides were far worse. See you on here in another 7 or 8 games when the team starts to click with a further 2 signings to boot then you can hold your hand up.

...and while i'm here, the worst performers of this season to date are all Keane signings anyway: Delaney, Edwards and Leadbitter....

PMason - so on that logic Bobby Robson losing 6-1 to Villa a few weeks before winning the FA Cup made him a bad manager??

Jewell is bringing in good players and is turning things around. Expecting a new team to be firing on all cylinders within a couple of weeks is ridiculous!

Nothing will come from negativity so get behind your team and help build something good!!

The main thing is we got the result. Considering that Murphy and Sonko have only been at the club a few days I thought they did very well.

Agree with you there scottmdp, i think he'll score plenty in this division. I see another striker who slipped through the net has started the season well - Charlie Austin.

Plenty of players in the lower leagues who can make the grade at this level. Look at Cresswell, our player of the season so far! I'd like to see us save a few quid and raid the lower leagues for a few younger players so we have good balance in our side.

Mmm, pmason. A terrible game.
A crap Leeds team.
Would have beaten us if they'd had 11 player's.
..and.."I sick with my comment's" ...oh sorry.."I stick with my comment's"
I was going to agree with one of your point's there!! Sorry to disappoint. But why put yourself through this? I can see the black cloud's above where you live from here. Try supporting Beach Volleyball. I'm a miserable bastard but even that bring's a smile to my face and makes me stand to attention! :)
I think Mr P. Mason, you need a good seeing to by your secretary, the lovely Della. She was always good at raising a smile and a few other thing's at the end of one of your cases!! FFS GET A LIFE !!!

Some observations:

For the Leeds goal, Snodgrass drew 3 Ipswich defenders before crossing to and Edwards was left on his own with 2 forwards...McCormack was completely unchallenged.

JET showed a nice burst of speed into the penalty area...looks like he did nudge (shouder to shoulder) the defender but not a foul by him.

Great goal and assist from Scotland...will help fis confidence.

Look forward to 3 more points v Blackpool!

Now that I know Grayson's nickname is Larry, every time I see him on TV I will find it hard not to laugh & keep saying shut that door

marcus139 - I suggest you 'think before you print' - as if this Club can afford to loose support to local opposition i.e. Norwich or Colchester.
Not everyone see's things thro' rose tinted specs - and they are entitled to there view, just as you are - but please don't be silly and tell them to go elsewhere.

If / when this team gets it's act together - the support will be there as previously - and who wants to be a loser anyway, although many people are prepared to accept just that. That category maybe includes you.

nice to see some passion on this site (WOULD BE GOOD TO WITNESS THE SAME LEVEL AT HOME GAMES ) but take stock not the best town performance we`ve seen ,some supporters need to give themselves time to reflect on what they witnessed on saturday, out played first half but made some inroads second half,we have come a long way in a week ,ok we got some luck but keep positive its so easy to slip into the negative side of life, right know the town needs us so thats back our boys, dont expect world beaters but do expect ups and downs, blue army

Getting a bit worried about some of our fans now.

JET was always gonna be inconsistent, but a waste of money wtf?

In the games he's played, how many times have we scored because of him...

Well?
