Jewell: Leeds Will Feel Hard Done By
Jewell: Leeds Will Feel Hard Done By
Saturday, 27th Aug 2011 18:49

Blues boss Paul Jewell admitted that Leeds will have felt hard done by after Town’s 2-1 victory at Portman Road. Jason Scotland and Keith Andrews netted late goals for the Blues after the visitors had been reduced to 10 men.

Jewell said: “Let’s have it right, Leeds are a good team and they outplayed us in the first half, we’ve got to say that.

“When you’ve lost by five and seven it doesn’t matter what you say, the players are edgy, very, very nervous and on the back foot.

“It’s difficult when you’ve just been humiliated. I saw Leeds last week at West Ham and they were excellent and they should have won.

“They will feel a little bit hard done by. Last week, we didn’t deserve any luck, let’s get that right, but we had three or four decisions that went against us.

“Today we had a couple that went our way and a deflection. Nothing’s all rosy in the garden, we know we’ve got a lot of work to do. But tonight’s not a night to analyse it, it’s just a night to go ‘thank Christ for that!’."

The Blues boss had praise for sub Jason Scotland: “He came back and has worked hard in pre-season. When I was naming the subs today I looked at his record against Leeds and he’s got a decent record against them from when he was at Swansea. So, I stuck him on the bench and he scored one and made one.”

Leeds boss Simon Grayson was unhappy with the decision which led to Aidy White being sent off for a foul on Jay Emmanuel-Thomas but Jewell felt there was no argument: “I just said to Larry [Simon Grayson] that if he’s the last man then he has to go. Larry seems to think it might have been a nudge but a nudge isn’t a foul.

“One’s 6ft 3 and the other kid’s 5ft 7. He lives round the corner from me in Leeds and is a friend of my kids! He’s a lovely kid as well.

“I was more interested in getting a penalty than getting the lad sent off. But once he’s last man and he brings him down, he’s got to go.”

The Town manager did agree with Grayson that Leeds should have been awarded a spotkick when Carlos Edwards fouled Max Gradel just before the Blues' winner: “I didn’t have a great view but it looked a penalty to me. I asked Carlos after the game and he said it was 50-50 which probably tells me all I need to know.”

Whites boss Simon Grayson thought the match hinged on the red card: “I think the whole game changed on the sending off decision. I thought in the first half we were outstanding.

“An Ipswich team which has been put together with some internationals and has cost a lot of money never created a chance against us.”

Grayson is considering an appeal as he feels Aidy White was fouled first: “I’ve seen it, and people might differ with me, but it’s a freekick on Aidy White to start with.

“He and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas are running through, Emmanuel-Thomas has nudged him in the back and he’s fallen over, which is why Aidy’s brought him down. That changed the game because we weren’t in any danger of losing that match today.”

Grayson also felt his side should have been given a spotkick: “Max Gradel could have had a penalty on another day. If it was a freekick outside the box we would have got it, inside it isn’t given.

“I’m not here to slaughter the referee but decisions can change the complexion of games and the whole result of games.”

Let's remember that we came from behind to beat a dangerous team and took all three points, Leeds were superior in the first half, we could hardly manage to get a pass to another Ipswich player, it was I would imagine, the tension created by the previous two league games, not wanting to let us down again, however the second half was ours right from the opening moments and when Jimmy came on it lifted the fans and the whole team, his influence is priceless and although out of practice, he still played some excellent football and commanded the game.

As for the red card, Durso did not give it until his linesman, who had a good view, had assured him that it was a foul, for me the game was a thriller and I went home a very happy man, Sonko looks very solid and I was delighted that Scotland scored and played so well, it will do his confidence a great deal of good.

3 points is 3 points, however you get it.
When its near the end of the season and we are in a desperate fight against relegation, we will remember how crucial this game was.
Terrible game, watched it on Internet. Leeds annhilated us in 1st half and should have been 3 up by half-time. Ipswich 1-4 Leeds would have been a fairer reflection, but somehow luck went our way. Ref did us proud.

So guentchev you only credit us with only one goal when we scored two very good ones?

Leeds did play well but "4-1 would've been a fairer reflection"???
Sounds like you've got a dodgy broadband connection Guentchev!

We're clearly a newly assembled team which needs to bed-in, until that happens we'll take any luck which comes our way.
Expect us to be firing on all cylinders around October/November!

An important win even if we were lucky in instances and had to grind out a result against 10 men. After recent results I'd have taken 1-1, hell I'd have taken a 0-1 loss. Andrews is proving himself to be a superb signing, and sounds like Sonko had a solid debut.

Pleased also for Jason Scotland who I feel gets far too much stick and far too little credit from some town fans. Hopefully we'll see another centre back and a right back come in before the next fixture. Expecting good things once the team has fully gelled and is up to speed.

that leeds manager is a right whinger how can your team win if they only score 1 goal and the opposition score 2 ? i think he needs to study the rule book the twerp. if we win like this when not playing great imagine when we start playing !

Jewell has practically rebuilt a whole new squad of players - they will need to time to bed in, its as simple as that.

Key points from todays game for me were the following.

1. Delaney needs replacing. You cant have a CB that just hoof's and hopes all the time. However in part defence for this he had little option as...

2. Leadbitter sad to have to say it , is a sorry excuse for a midfielder, let alone a captain! He is basically non existent.

3. Bullard is a "must" for us - it was no coincidence that the ball was played on the deck in the 2nd half, where he was constantly on the ball, demanding the ball, offering a route out of defence for the hapless Delaney (no more hoofing it in the 2nd half!!). A match fit Jimmy will be awesome is a midfield of Bullard . Andrews and Bowyer.

4. Murphy is an inspired signing IMO - and should be teamed up with Chopra and or Scotland.

5. JET is not good enough, quick enough, or committed enough to have that wide Rt midfield spot. Especially given that, "walk about" Edwards is behind him making the right side of the team weak and vulnerable to counter attacks. JET offers us little going forwards, and getting service into our strikers . Carson on the other hand , does !

6. Sonko - AT LAST a man mountain of a CB! Just need to get another one beside him and ship Delaney out !

All in all, once this set of players settles down as a team it will start to push for a top 6 place.

My only concern is our distinct lack of pace throughout the side !

Have to say that pmason from the first page has no concept of how the game is played, he is also not a true blues fan. We started poorly/nervosuly indeed, which you would expect at home just after a the debacle at Peterborough and the pressure that that brings; but most certainly finished the stronger especially after PJ made the necessary chages. That is what a good manager does and PJ is a good manager. We just need to rid ourselves of Delaney and get a decent RB, give the boys a few games to get used to each other; then we'll be winning more and more. I suggest that pmason trys to follow another team, possibly one further north.

Well done lads! The key thing for me was that we came back from a goal down with a quarter of an hour to go and dug out a win. After the last two games, this shows real character - we never gave up. That mentality can be worth 10 to 20 points a season. Brilliant work!

Mason - Leeds not a crap team...they gave west ham a run for their money at upton park last week...

The huge positive from the sending off is this; after the sending off, the team did manage to take make its superiority in numbers COUNT, it managed to start creating chances and having attempts at leed's goal.

It wouldn't have been a win if we were not able to do just that...so to me, that's something we can build on...now we have to prove we can effectively compete against 11 on the field.

Positive sign nonetheless...

Grayson ain't gonna get any sympathy moaning about luck especially from a team that copped a (or two) hiding as we did...

Football is a game of many keybmoments. Leeds could have scored at least 3 in the first half, but didn't, so mr grayson, don't you go having selective memory and picked 2 "key moments" to explain your team's loss whereas you discarded many other many key moments in the match.

Would rather him being gracious about their loss by saying how we managed to turn things around in the 2nd half...

Well done ITFC!
Fair enough, they outplayed us in the first 45 minutes but I feel we had the better of the second 45. The win will give us a big boost going into a very difficult game away at Blackpool.
Unlike some on this site didn't think we deserved to lose it. A draw or a narrow win for us (which is what happened) is a fair result.
You've got to give PJ credit for bringing in Keith Andrews. Would love to see the guy play for us as a permanent signing. He is a solid goal-scorer from midfield who takes his opportunities when he gets them. Bullard + Andrews will make a good combination.
Sonko was superb. Can see why he is called "Superman". Only disappointments I feel were Delaney (he had one of his better games but he just can't pass...) and the massively disappointing Leadbitter. Leadbitter has a lot more talent than he's showing and IMO he's not even bothering to try anymore. Very bad example as a Captain. Its about time he was "de-captained" (it isn't working) and Bullard given the Captain's reins. Poor...so very poor....
Felt JET played well.

pmason, you don't deserve to have a login, get a life, bugger off back to carrot road!! Brilliant result, a win leads to confidence, quicker gelling etc, imagine with the three new signings on board, and an immediate loss, would have been a huge deflation, now we have belief!! COYB!!

Just 3 more signings (a goallie, a centreback to replace Delaney and a rightback to be first choice ahead of Edwards) and I feel we will compete for a top 6 spot. that Suler guy, can he play rightback?
Yes, they were probably better than us. Plenty of teams were better than Norwich last year yet they kept pipping them at the post with last minute goals. Don't care if we are completely outplayed for 80 mins of the 90, so long as we score more goals than them in that 10 min spell!
3 more signings, just 3 more and we will be in the play-offs.
Give credit where credit is due- Scotland was brilliant y/day. Played his heart out, created a goal, nearly created 2 more and scored a cracker. Scotland and Chopra is the ideal combo up front.

Was liking ya comments and was in agreement untill the last four words appeared . Sorry my friend JET was absolutley terrible Again yesterday . He really looks to be lacking in confidence big time cos im sure its not his abillity . For a big man he wins very little if anything in the air , he just looks to me very unsure what to do when he gets the ball . Perhaps out wide isnt his favoured posistion , but should still do much better than he is at present . Looked much better when played in the middle behind chops (ie first time he done anything was for their sending off , running down the middle). For me Jet on one side and Leadbitter on the other are very important posistions of the pitch we are just completely wasting at the moment there is no creativity from the wings when these two play there and that gives a very negative look to the team . Would love to see natural tricky , creative wingers in the side . Need a RB asap and to get Carlos on the wing as to me he has looked the most dangerous going forward and thats from defence . As for the Carlos Edwards haters , in his defence im sure he knows he isnt the greatest right back , but you cant fault his efforts for playing a posistion that doesnt come natural to him . He is doing a job playin out of posistion and bet he cant wait to get out of defence as much as some of you cant wait . Strongly beleive all will come good with a few more DECENT signins and a bit of time . In Jewell we trust....

Wasn't the best I've seen but a new team takes time was patches through the game where you could see in a few games time will come good as to win when playing not so good and to get a bit of luck for the winner no team has ever won anything playing great football you need luck and to grind out results

So, the three weak spots are Delaney, Leadbitter, and Edwards (as out of position) - which are coincidentally the three remnants of Keanes team. The COMPLETE overhaul is nearly there. Keep it up PJ - lots of good signings so far and now need a bit of time to gel. All very positive.

Have to say all, I'd've taken a 2 -1 win before the game, [ have to say I was hoping for a draw in the light of a lot of the players not having had too much time to gel ]and I'm sure an awful lot on here expected a larruping from Leeds. I'll take all the possitives from yesterday and a two week break should see a team a bit more comfortable with each other.
I know that Andrews is a loan to buy, but does anybody know whether a fee was already dicussed ? If not, his price must be soaring with a goal a game !
Well done lads !
