Jewell Set to Meet Leadbitter on Wednesday
Jewell Set to Meet Leadbitter on Wednesday
Tuesday, 6th Sep 2011 13:38

Boss Paul Jewell has revealed that he will be talking to skipper Grant Leadbitter on Wednesday. The 25-year-old, who was targeted by Portsmouth last month, is out of contract at the end of the season with the Blues manager believing that the uncertainty over the midfielder's future has affected his form.

Jewell has stated on a number of occasions that the former Sunderland man will be offered new terms and says he will speak with the ex-England U21 international tomorrow: "I'll be seeing him Wednesday to have a chat about things in general.

"We want to be on top of the situation, we don't want questions, questions, questions about players' contracts running down."

The Town manager has previously said that he wants to avoid a repeat of the situations which developed with David Norris and Gareth McAuley last season.

I agree that we don't want a repeat of last season with players leaving for free and in an ideal situation we would receive a reasonable fee for him after signing him up. However I believe he could cost us near on £1m in wages a year so it may be best just to accept the huge loss as he has been appalling for too long now and I don't think he should get in our team even though he's the skipper.

Basically a poor signing from day one. I personally don't think he is as bad as we have had to suffer from him, occasionally for unknown reasons moves just never work out for some players. I feel he could possibly move on, and I think that would be in the interests of both club and player, and prove to be a cracking acquisition elsewhere. Just one of those things.

The question mark for me is PJ's judgement .... I am beginning to think it is no better than Keano's frankly - after all, what the hell possessed PJ to give the captaincy to Leadbitter in the first place?

Oh well, onwards and upwards (we hope!)

I fear we have missed the boat for a decent fee so whichever way he chooses we are once again the losers. Was quite impressed with him over parts of his time with us but he will never dictate a midfield, he has no pace and is definitely not a captain. January sale for £500K.

Spot on sitcom72. Previous manager wasted so much money. Never would have attracted the players PJ has.

Let's all get behind the boss and team. Rk took us back at least 5 years. No more fallon or stern john signings that's for sure! Coyb

have to laugh at the comments today....fans assume it is so easy....."sign him and sell him"...."sell him for half of what we paid".....really you expect we will get over 1m for him.....

Would be happy to drive him to any club wishing to take him on - never impressed me - always looking to pass back for safety rather than looking to create moves forward for team, totally useless at corners and pathetic at free kicks - have to say I would question PJ's judgement in giving him the captains armband when in the same breath commenting on how quiet he is - Reckon Andrews should take on captaincy as he is clearly a leader and not shy to speak his mind on the pitch

There is a saying that 'form is temporary, class is permanent'. In his case I'll make an exception as he is permanently formless.

When Grant first came to the club, he looked to have great potential, what happened? have we changed his game of play? He used to attack and create, but has always been poor at dead ball kicks either corner or free kick, all of which he has been trained to take, and doesn't score enough goals. Why has this not been addressed on the training ground? Why is he seen as 'Captain material'.
These are a few points that us humble 'football knowledgeable fans' would like answered...before he leaves us?

One of the last of Keanes failures. A bumch of overpriced and overpaid failures that we were told would challenge for promotion. Lead, and brought here, by a manager that was pretty much a failure from day one - yet so many were demanding that he should be allowed nore time, as it was not the Ipswich way. Irrespective of the fact that it was not working and sending the club backwards.

My fear is that supporters might cast the same blind eye to the fact that our squad is now filled up with so many over 30's, loanees and freebies rather previously where it was Keanes Irish and ex Sunderland castoffs. We know the reason for the latter. Keane did not have the skill or knowledeg to bring in others. What we don't seem to acknowledge is why Jewell is having to fill up the squad on the cheap.

Another case of belated hindsight. Lets hope it doesn't take more than eighteen months to work out is currently going on this time

First of all an unreserved apologise to Phil TWTD, his knowledge and devotion to the football club is beyond question.

I couldn't believe it when this "captain unsettled" story broke. Leadbitter has not played a decent game under Jewell and yet he makes him captain. The team only four games into his new role put in the worst performance I can ever remember and he does not even comment.

For Jewell to go to the press with the story or theory is just daft, unless he does not really want to keep him long term. It is certainly not going to get the fans on the lad's side.

I know Ipswich having a Terry Butcher style captain is unfortunately a thing of the past. All I ask is that the captain and team play with 100% effort and show a willingness to battle on the pitch for the football club. Grant is not remotely close to doing that at the moment.

I think the lad can play but it is so long since he performed for the club that I am sceptical that he can turn it around, I hope I am proved wrong.

Things are coming to a head, the midfield is an area where we are not struggling for numbers and Bowyer it seems is likely to be available for selection on Saturday. Why would Jewell wait for almost the full two weeks into the international break to reveal there will be contract talks with Leadbitter. I would have thought talk of defensive loan players coming in may have been higher on his list of priorities, with the loan window opening.

One thing for certain is Blackpool on Saturday is going to be real test and no hiding place for the captain, Jewell or the team. Blackpool, a team that is likely to be in around the top six this season and who in the last two seasons have played with a real desire and commitment.

I go to the seaside on Saturday hoping the Ipswich captain and players will at least match their counerparters for desire and commitment. If we can't match them for that particularly after recent drubbings then I fear it is going to be a difficult season. However if we can, then perhaps we can look forward to the season with real optimism.

Don't think we should get rid of Leadbitter until we have a suitable replacement. If Birmingham etc want him, he must still do some good stuff in training.
If he refuses to sign up, he's got to go asap. Try to get 600K for him in the January Transfer Window. If not, we need to get behind our Captain. He's got to have been given his Captaincy for a reason. Lets see that reason.
I just wish he would actually try. Its frustrating to see such lethargy on the pitch. Walking around while we are 2 or 3 down and our defence is in tatters isn't doing him any favours.
What a waste of a potential 1M midfielder (we never should have paid 2.6- great business for them btw)

I reckon Leadbitters unhappy at PR. Its the only thing that can explain his recent, truly horrendous performances for our beloved club.
A loan-out with a view to a permanent deal being done in January is a good idea.
I feel genuinely sorry for the guy, he's simply not good enough. Loan him out to Yeovil or Barnet with a permanent move in Jan. I really do feel he has something to offer League 2 or Conference Football. Still have no idea why the guy is Capt, he's so damn quiet on the pitch.
