Jewell: We Concede When We Come Under Pressure
Jewell: We Concede When We Come Under Pressure
Saturday, 19th Nov 2011 17:56

Blues boss Paul Jewell was again left ruing his side’s tendency to give away goals when they come under pressure at vital times as Town conceded two in the final six minutes as they lost 3-2 at Nottingham Forest.

Jewell said: “It’s a bit of a sickener. I thought it was a good game. I thought there was plenty of effort and endeavour.

“I think that at vital times in games, and I’ve said it before, when we come under pressure we concede goals.”

The Town manager says his players were again guilty of making unforced mistakes: “Individual errors - the first goal is definitely the keeper’s fault and that’s right on half-time, a vital time in the game. The second one is someone not marking the man they were told to, although it was a good ball in.

“But Steve Cotterill will be saying the same thing about our goals - four set plays. In the end you need that little bit of luck, a deflection off Grant’s head has fallen right for their player. So, once again it’s a big disappointment for us.”

Jewell felt his side deserved more from the match: “It’s always frustrating but I think we came here and played quite well for periods of time. It was a game between two evenly matched sides, I thought. They were at home and the onus is on them.

“Again we’ve got ourselves in two winning positions and at vital times in the game we’ve given silly goals away.

“I thought we matched them all over the pitch at times and it’s still not an easy place to come, Nottingham Forest.”

He admits that the Blues’ form won’t improve until they stop giving away poor goals: “It doesn’t matter which way you dress it up, we concede goals and that’s not just the goalkeeper and the back four, that’s a whole team thing.

“I think we had the first corner of the game after about an hour, so it wasn’t a game of loads of chances, our keeper hasn’t had anything to do really. It was a game of two honest teams trying to win the game but not one with a plethora of chances.”

Jewell says midfielder Keith Andrews will be back for the Blues’ home game against Reading having undergone surgery on his broken nose: “He had an operation on Thursday morning and hopefully he’ll be back next week.”

Forest boss Steve Cotterill thought his side deserved the win: “What a fantastic advert for the Championship. Everybody was entertained today, that’s for sure.

"I think it was a game we deserved to win, it doesn’t matter about the two late goals.

“I think that showed their team spirit, their togetherness, their belief, I thought they worked extremely hard today and I felt it was a game they deserved to win.”

Starting to wonder what direction we are going in. The potential trouble would be that if we replaced pj then the next bloke would do a similar clear out , say the tea needs time to gel and all the rest of old tripe of excuses and we all carry on moaning . So is it always truely worth it. We may have found our level in mid table so boys and girls get used to it

Just got back from game and yet again not happy.
Have scanned the comments on here and it seems the reason we keep getting beat is Leadbitter?
I am not his biggest fan but he is far from the only failure in this current team.
We cannot/do not defend the second ball in the box, time after time we concede for this reason and PJ bemoans it yet fails to fix the problem. Prem has beens and loans are not the answer.
Bullard again today (seem to be saying this every week) was very poor and constantly gives away the ball in the middle, drop him.
Ellington, dont know what we are paying him but I will double it for him to pi$$ off. He has contributed absolutely nothing since he arrived, well 5 minutes against Brighton werent bad I suppose. We were 2-1 up today when Scotland went off and looking comfortable but JET and Ellington come on and it was backs to the wall until the inevitable.
Ingmarsson is not good/fit enough either, another waste of money.
PJ has spent millions instead of working with/ im[proving what we had with the odd addition. No doubt his answer is to spend more. Try hard work like the rest of us do to earn our money.
Sorry but he has to go, we are no further forward than under Jim or Keane.

Dark days ladies and gentlemen.

The scoreline suggests an even game but according to the stats we managed just one clear cut shot on goal all game. Poor performance after poor performance no signs of improvement seemingly anywhere in the squad.

Heart breaking that players like Bullard, who were talismans at the end of last season, appear to be a shadow of their former selves.

Five terrible performances and four straight losses. Sven got the chop for less, yet I can't see Evans and Clegg taking any action until it's too late. I honestly don't think we have a prayer against a speedy and motivated Reading side and can see another home drubbing looming.

I like Jewell but I'm starting to lose patience/ faith now. If we don't get a win within the next three games....Hmm..

COYBs!

lets look at the positives here we are scoring now, under the dark lord we couldn't score in a brothel. we still make the best cyder and beer in the country in suffolk, as previously mentioned we have the best looking women in the country, suffolk is the sunniest warmest place in england and we have the best pies and we could still be in a play off position in january with a little run of wins !
thats hardly wrist slashing stuff...cheer up happiness is contagious and happy teams and fans will be winners......................................................................................{the author takes no responsibility for a terrible run of defeats which could relegate us }

The best thing that can happen we dive into Div 3 or one in this times.
We can stop thinking then about the Premiership and loans and signing players on their last legs.
I'm not saying PJ doesn't know what he is doing but young legs pressure off and slow build will see us progress in the end.We will also see if our benefactor is in it for the long term.
I'm a long term ITFC fan there in 78 81 and 2011 but for crying out loud this current loop needs to be broken.

This was another game thrown away. Twice ahead we end up conceding three and the records show another defeat, the 4th in a row. We are told time and again that this is a results business. If ME subscribes to this point of view he will no doubt tonight be contacting his mates in the game for an opinion on the next stooge to take on the Manager's role. Whatever, PJ is now on borrowed time. None of his 'stating the bleeding obvious' post match platitudes will help him or us now.

I still struggle to believe we never sorted out our defence before the season started. Cresswell was an excellent spot but even a blind squirrel can find a nut. We need to move on lots of players in january we can not continue in this league conceding goals the way we currently are. January is only round the corner and change is approaching jewell has no choice.

tractorboy, what an idiot you are. so the day evans joined town was a sad day. how do you work that out? if it wasnt for him thered probably be no itfc. you should remember that. its not his fault that 3 managers now seem to have wasted the money hes given them to improve matters on the pitch. yes, im as gutted & frustrated at way things are going at this time but lets not put the blame at the door of a guy whose kept, & is still keeping this club alive

What a bunch of w*nkers the fans really were today! Never got behind the team only when they were in front. First time I've been away today and after the limp writested effort from the alleged itfc fans it'll be the last. Lord knows some of us tried to get you going but the majority would rather get back to reading your books. We all spent money going there today so get behind the boys instead of waiting to get on here and whine and winge like a bunch of big girls. FFs.

We REALLY need to get our defence sorted out and we need to sell Leadbitter in January. I can only imagine that's why he's getting so many games (con a team into buying our "Captain" for £500,000 or something- pretend its a bargain).
On the positive side- we weren't thrashed in this game. It was actually a real game of football and at times we played some good stuff. Great game by Collins. On the negative side- we have given away sloppy goals for 5 years and it continued yesterday. We are progressively heading towards the relegation zone.

Time will tell whether the team we have right now can survive a relegation scrap. I think not (many of our players believe they are Premier League and should be pushing for the top). How these players will fight in the weeks ahead could be interesting. We are 7 points away from it now and at this stage in the season any manager or player would hold up their hands and say "Yes, we are in it". The teams below us are catching form and the next 4 games could be our most crucial so far. If we lose these (and we have the potential to lose badly against anyone) we will be right in it.
The frustrating thing is we can beat anyone too. Our result at West Ham for example? A lot of Hammers fans (all my friends pretty much!) say that we nowhere near deserved that result. I disagree- it wasn't just a fluke and shows that we can scrape results at times.
Those who say relegation would be good for us? I don't think so....I don't think we'd do a Norwich....

“I thought we matched them all over the pitch at times and it's still not an easy place to come, Nottingham Forest.”

Matched them all over the pitch - didn't see that from where I was sitting! Forest played some wonderful short passing football on the edge of our box, they just couldn't finish.

Midfield was a joke, Leadbitter his usual self, not up to much. Bullard, who was taking a lot of stick from those around me, worked harder than of late but still managed to give the ball away far too often. I suspect he has other things on his mind.

Defensively I almost lost count the times Edwards was left alone with a tricky winger attacking the box from the Forest left. Although Collins had a sound game, I suspect he'll soon be on his way. What then? Inger do da's and Smith at the back (Sonko will always be injured!), we'll soon be conceeding at an average of 3 a game!

We seem to be back to where we were this time last year, a poor team run by a poor manager. Tatically it was poor, Why have two useless strikers (Jet and Etherington - he's so poor I can't be bother getting his name right!) on for the last 10 minutes? when we needed to close the game up.

The only excuse Jewell can have, was the unfortunate injury to Scotland. Up till then he was the only player holding the ball up. If not for the injury to Scotland we may have won.

With the money spent, we should at least by challenging for the top six. But already its clear with Scotland, Sonko, Bowyer, Bullard, Inger do da's plus any other OAPs I could mention, the team is just too old to do anything this season.

Unfortunately its a case for a new manager, this time please use more youthful players and slowly build the team up!

Jewell never said promotion/play offs was the target.

We WILL lose games, like we have, and we WILL win games, like we,have. It's called the football season. We will play badly, like we have, and we will play well, like we have.

People cried we were heading for relegation the last two seasons and we didn't (even if Keane has stayed I don't quite think he would have relegated us, and I was hugely critical of him). With the squad we have now (much superior than previous) can we stop being dramatic and saying 'relegation is a real possibility'.

If we don't make the play offs this season we will re-group and go again next year like it used to be when managers were given time.

PSGBlue added 00:38 - Nov 20
Garv, we will re-group. The question is, who will re-group? Half the players at the club will be too old to re-group next summer. We will then be looking for new players, will that be a simular to this year? Over the hill ex-premiership players looking for an easy one last season payoff!

I want a manager who can look to the lower leagues (just like Lambert) and get some younger players who will be the future of ITFC. I don't think Jewell is capable of doing that!

We have Englands back up keeper. Probably one of the highest earning midfielders in the division (Bullard) Prolific career scorers upfront Chopra and Scotland- something is drastically wrong at the club again!
Bullard, Edwards, Chopra all have things on their mind.
Might be worth bringing Drury and Peters back

There just seems to be a complete lack of passion and grit in the team and I'm worried that we are going down. Didnt want to say it but I'd be glad to see Jewell gone now..

thechangingman added 08:44 - Nov 20
I think that if we're honest we all knew that Jewell wasn't the man for the job (come on, how many of us on here had him on our short, or even LONG, list?) but like 'true fans' (for this read: brainless robots who support ANY decision the Big People make) we accepted it and got behind him anyway.
Well, he's had his chance, brought in his own players and instituted his own, ahem, 'tactics'.
So, where are we now?
A sad excuse for a football team, with a sad excuse for a manager. I am all for taking the long view and for stability at a club, BUT this is only valid when you have a least a small amount of faith and hope in the manager's ability.
I have none.
I've stuck with him this long but for the best interests of my beloved football club I am now forced to say:
JEWELL OUT NOW!!!!!!

This is patheic watching the likes of Southampton they have so much hunger and desire because they have young and lower league players who are enthusiastic and want to get better. We on the other hand have a retirerment home here for the premier league has beens. For crying out loud what about signing Ferdinand and Hall from Southend Rhodes from Huddersfield and Scott Loach in Goal and let's get players in who want to improve want to play at a higher level we so desperatly need pace and movement. Come on PJ sort it out

We were second best to NF and in the end 3-2 was a flattering scoreline. At times they passed us to death but didn't seem to be able to get that final, clinical shot on goal (they needed a Jason Scotland to shoot from distance). If we had won 2-1 it would have been a total travesty.
With the team we have, I can't see how relegation isn't a possibility. What if Stockdale was suddenly asked to go back? AB behind a shambolic defence every game would be interesting. God, how many goals have we shipped in this season? I don't even want to look at the stats. Of course we go to pieces under pressure, we are a shambles. What is our defence coach doing week in/ week out?
We need young players in who will run and run and run. Leadbitter needs to say bye bye (one of the worst midfielders we have ever had by a mile), and we need to keep players like Lavery (they are our future).
Sacking Jewell isn't going to make a lot of difference. More instability would only make it worse right now.
