Jewell: We Concede When We Come Under Pressure
Jewell: We Concede When We Come Under Pressure
Saturday, 19th Nov 2011 17:56

Blues boss Paul Jewell was again left ruing his side’s tendency to give away goals when they come under pressure at vital times as Town conceded two in the final six minutes as they lost 3-2 at Nottingham Forest.

Jewell said: “It’s a bit of a sickener. I thought it was a good game. I thought there was plenty of effort and endeavour.

“I think that at vital times in games, and I’ve said it before, when we come under pressure we concede goals.”

The Town manager says his players were again guilty of making unforced mistakes: “Individual errors - the first goal is definitely the keeper’s fault and that’s right on half-time, a vital time in the game. The second one is someone not marking the man they were told to, although it was a good ball in.

“But Steve Cotterill will be saying the same thing about our goals - four set plays. In the end you need that little bit of luck, a deflection off Grant’s head has fallen right for their player. So, once again it’s a big disappointment for us.”

Jewell felt his side deserved more from the match: “It’s always frustrating but I think we came here and played quite well for periods of time. It was a game between two evenly matched sides, I thought. They were at home and the onus is on them.

“Again we’ve got ourselves in two winning positions and at vital times in the game we’ve given silly goals away.

“I thought we matched them all over the pitch at times and it’s still not an easy place to come, Nottingham Forest.”

He admits that the Blues’ form won’t improve until they stop giving away poor goals: “It doesn’t matter which way you dress it up, we concede goals and that’s not just the goalkeeper and the back four, that’s a whole team thing.

“I think we had the first corner of the game after about an hour, so it wasn’t a game of loads of chances, our keeper hasn’t had anything to do really. It was a game of two honest teams trying to win the game but not one with a plethora of chances.”

Jewell says midfielder Keith Andrews will be back for the Blues’ home game against Reading having undergone surgery on his broken nose: “He had an operation on Thursday morning and hopefully he’ll be back next week.”

Forest boss Steve Cotterill thought his side deserved the win: “What a fantastic advert for the Championship. Everybody was entertained today, that’s for sure.

"I think it was a game we deserved to win, it doesn’t matter about the two late goals.

“I think that showed their team spirit, their togetherness, their belief, I thought they worked extremely hard today and I felt it was a game they deserved to win.”

Ipswich24 spot on we do not have hunger and desire we have players nearing the end of their careers most of them excellent careers but they are now a spent force who are topping up the bank balance before retirement and are not comitted to ITFC.
We need pace in the side 5 changes again today. It appears to me that RK expected too much of players who were never capable of producing what he demanded and he lacked any tact or motivation however the team albeit a poor team did graft. Now we have a care free atitude - players jogging to the ground , an apparent don't care if we win or lose. We must go back to basics cause this team are not too good to go down. Wait for the mass exodus January .
Sad times...lost of greed not too much effort.

2 weeks on the training ground and another 3 bad goals conceded to mediocre opposition. On current form we will be in the bottom 3 by xmas. Our defending has got worse under PJ. He seems a really nice bloke with a great sense of humour but it is difficult to have any confidence that he can turn things around. With our dreadful defensive record we need a proper holding midfielder in front of the defence. Kennedy should be deployed in this role until a true defensive midfielder is signed. The January transfer window is crucial and PJ must bring in young, athletic players to inject some hunger and tempo to the team. It is embarrassing being a Town fan at the moment.

It's been a big gamble for PJ having so many experienced (old) ex premiership players in the team, if we end up mid-table which is very probable he'll just have to buy even more players for next season with quite a few of them in the knackers yard - Bowyer 36 Bullard 33/34 Ingmarsson 35 Sonko 32, with Ellington, Murphy and Co. should be long gone by then. So in summary a possibility to have to rebuild again next season, PJ isn't building a team for the future so anybody who says we have a 2/3 year plan is talking cobblers, where are the youths coming through?

Garv....if you have watched any of the last 6 years then I don't think anynone will say holding our hands up and saying we CAN get relegated is "dramatic". It's time to becone less arrogant about the club and realise the same shiit happened to scum, Leeds, Forest etc.

Even if we do finish mid table then what? Jewell has spent 2 transfer windows in recruiting has beens who shouldn't be here in 12 months....and then we go back to the start ie splash another 3 or 4 mill. We have done this for 3 years and I'm telling you now it will end in tears if we carry on.

Look at Saints youth team in 05 and look at ours. We were just as good but most of them have become prem players due to saints knowing their arse from their elbow, we never worked with our kids on the training ground. And now its all about spend spend spend. Disgusting.

Ladies and Gentlemen - what you are seeing is PAUL JEWELL at his best.

I didn't expect anything else from him ( although hoped otherwise) when he was appointed - and somewhat sadly have been proved correct.

He will leave this Club with the accolade of 'worst Manager ever to manage the Club' - and that is some achievement !!.

Had a text from a Norwich fan yesterday saying:- 'as much as I hate the scum you really can't continue further into the season WITHOUT a Manager' - says it all I think.

Sorry folks but this is not a team moving forward! Watching this home and away is becoming a very tedious chore more than a love for the game and our team. So disappointing yesterday, when are we going to start playing with a desire to destroy teams? Theres no doubt we have the players to get to the play offs and beyond, come on Jewell now is the time to deliver!!

How anyone can say Jewell is the worst manager we've ever had is just dim, stupid, naive, ridiculous and antmy other words I can think of. Jewell has never had us flirting with relegation like Keane did. We are midtable right now, with the ability to go up (the table) or down (the table). We have seen impressive, very impressive performances this season which is more than Keane gave us in 20 months, and obviously some very bad ones. Yesterday cannot be seen as another thrashing, we were already on a bad run and it was always going to be tough, and we nearly won it. But with what Jewell has done at times for us shows we ARE capable. We are on a bad run, its happened to the best of them, but we know we have the players to do damage in this league. I never felt that with the previous management because we never saw any signs of it.

At 2-1 we were controlling the game. Why the raft of substitutions ?

The dividing line between success and failure in a football match is very thin, particularly in the championship. We won handsomely at West Ham and were humiliated at Peterborough. That dividing line at present for us is probably Sonko or someone of similar skills.

There is too much negative criticism. Criticise by all means but be constructive. Is it all the fault of Paul Jewell and Grant Leadbitter ? If GL is that poor why have other Clubs expressed an interest in him? Presumably
their coaching staff are clueless!!
As for PJ, give him time. If he had immediately filled his team with young inexperienced players and they were beaten week after week what would that do for confidence?
Have faith and support the Club.If it were not for ME we could be where Plymouth Argyle are now!

Cheshire....by all accounts there hasn't been a single club that have bid for Leadbitter since he has been here. Of course it isnt down to two men but in 20 years watching ITFC I have seen a player perform so badly week after week yet still starts week after week. As for the armband- it's disgusting.

Those blaming Evans anger me. His only fault is giving manager after manager millions to spend and paying out £7m a year just to keep us afloat??? He is a hero for that. My main gripe is that he hasn't appointed any football men upstairs. And he agreed to release Bryan Klug, another disgusting decision by the club.

As i said before PJ talks the game they need to do this and that, players say the same, about time they put there mouths in their boots and get the job done.

And, 32 goals conceded in 17 games. Who the hell is our defensive coach these days because he's clearly not good enough!?

This is patheic watching the likes of Southampton they have so much hunger and desire because they have young and lower league players who are enthusiastic and want to get better. We on the other hand have a retirerment home here for the premier league has beens. For crying out loud what about signing Ferdinand and Hall from Southend Rhodes from Huddersfield and Scott Loach in Goal and let's get players in who want to improve want to play at a higher level we so desperatly need pace and movement. Come on PJ sort it out

Agree with Garv. It's been 10/11 months. If we gave every manager in this division the same team and a year to make them promotion certs no one would manage it! You're all absolutely ridiculous.

Yesterday the midfield looked poor, Bowyer and Leadbitter couldn't make a pass between them. They also had nothing in the tank for the last 10, and Notts wanted it more. Having said that I thought Scotland had an excellent game and really put himself about considering how little he had to work with. Otherwise I actually thought the defence played well. If you've only seen the goals you won't agree. If you'd seen the whole game you'd have noticed the save on the line from I think Cresswell, Edwards had a solid game and ingy and collins had a host of important interceptions and last stitch tackles.

Our midfield looked tired and we missed andrews. Maybe we should try a midfield of Carson/JET, bullard, andrews, Martin.

That said, calling for us to sack Jewell is ridiculous. They were better than us yet we still nearly won in a difficult away game! Had we won (and we nearly did) this would have been a completely different forum, let's not get too carried away there's so much more of this season to play.

I'm not a PJ lover, I just can't see how we can expect any kind of stability or change by just sacking him and putting out an advert. Considering most of these players were bought in by and believe in Jewell, sacking him could even make them more dispondant.

We need a new captain though, he was anonymous and had definitely given up too early.

At this moment in time sacking Jewell is not the answer. But say for example we lose another 2 or 3 games on the bounce I reckon he will walk. We gave Keane far to much time at ITFC it almost damaged us big time. I think it's fair to say after 10-11 months has PJ Done a great job? I would say Average and at times way below Average.

tomisamos:

I hear what you're saying about the risks in letting our manager go midway through a season, particularly after he's brought in 12 new signings. However, Gunn bought a whole new side and then got sacked after one game allowing Lambert to come in and, thus far, it seems to have been about the most fortunate decision the scummers have ever made.

I'm not calling for Jewell's head, but there needs to be a turn around and fast. We had a six-game losing run under Keane last season and it nearly proved mortal to the club (and no, I'm not forgetting the fact that PJ played a huge part in keeping us up).

For what its worth, here would be my proposed XI to face Reading:

GK: Stockdale

RB: Wabara
CB: Sonko (if fit)/ Ingimarsson
CB: Collins
LB: Creswell

Holding midfield: Hyam

RM: Edwards
CM Andrews
LM: Carson

FW: Chopra
FW: Scotland

Subs: ALB, Bullard, JET, Martin, Priskin

h32, John Duncan was the worst manager by a country mile in modern times. Some of you get real, Lee Clark wont be coming to Town, Jordan Rhodes wont either, so who else out do you think would be qualified to manage us. I,m as p**sed off about our current situation as any Town fan but chopping & changing managers willy nilly is not the answer.

h32 added 18:12 - Nov 20
pinewoodblueboy - well, our current incumbent certainly isn't the answer - that's for sure.

The way Jewell is going he will out strip Duncan for that accolade - as for Rhodes etc; coming to the Club, I agree with you - no chance.
In fact to tempt players here on full contracts now, is no easy task, other than more 'golden oldies' of course.

This Club has lost much of it's appeal to players - players wanting to leave this Club was almost unheard of, and certainly a rarity.

Much has to change - and fast !!

Jewell has the benefit of a benefactor, John Duncan never had that luxury. The Duncan regime was not good but I don't recall him bringing in so many journeymen, the team being so spineless and he gave youth a proper chance.

Jewell is not the answer, 10 months is not long I agree but he is clueless. That is not going to change.

I am really concerned about ticket sales for next season and that's if we are still in the Championship. A half empty Portman Road with a bowling ball of a pitch is very appetizing for the opposition.

The owner and fans have been badly let down by both Keane and Jewell.

We seem to have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory! Surely there is enough experience in the team,i.e. international players-to see out the game at 2-1 with 10 mins remaining.Getting really depressed about the state of our club.
