Jewell: Derby Loan Gives Priskin Chance to Win Longer Deal
Jewell: Derby Loan Gives Priskin Chance to Win Longer Deal
Thursday, 24th Nov 2011 12:03

Blues boss Paul Jewell says striker Tamás Priskin’s loan move to Derby gives the Hungarian international the chance to win himself a permanent contract with the Rams if he wants one. The 25-year-old’s Town terms are up at the end of the season with an extension looking unlikely after what’s been an up and down career at Portman Road since his £1.7 million move from Watford in the summer of 2009.

Jewell said: “Tamás has been on the periphery of the team. He played against Doncaster and Derby came in for him.

“I think it serves both parties. His contract’s up in the summer, so it’s up to him. He needs to go and prove himself to get sorted out for next year.”

Jewell admits Priskin hasn’t always been at his best for the Blues: “It just hasn’t happened for him here for whatever reason. He’s got all the ability - he’s 6ft 2in tall, he can run, he’s just been inconsistent really. It’s an opportunity for him. He wanted to go, so we let him go.

“He’s [due to be] coming back in January. If he wants to stay at Derby it’s up to him to say to Derby ‘give me a contract beyond the end of the season’.”

The Town manager, who says the striker will still be in his thoughts on his return if he doesn't win an extended stay at Pride Park, is in no doubt that Priskin has what it takes to succeed at this level and has a lot of time for him: “He’s got all the tools, he’s quick enough, he’s good in the air, he’s technically good. He doesn’t understand the offside law, that’s the only problem!" he joked.

“He is frustrating because he has all the attributes and he’s a smashing lad. I haven’t got a problem with him, despite what you might think.

“He’s not a bad lad at all. He’s a good lad, a good professional but he’s just lacked a bit of consistency here and I don’t want to stand in anybody’s way.”

Priskin is with the Rams until January 2nd but isn’t allowed to play for Nigel Clough’s side when they’re at Portman Road on Saturday 17th December.

If I never hear his name mentioned again it will be too soon.

Strange how 2 starters from 2 games ago are now gone, regardless of who they are and whether they should be gone. Was the Doncaster starting XI picked out of a hat?

Neither Kean nor Jewel have proven to be good enough to produce a good team for good players to flourish. You are both too inconsistent but you are good lads really!

It's nice isn't it, we buy a striker for £1.7M and two years later he has to go on a month's loan to try to prove that he is worth a free transfer. Roy Keane's transfer policy in a nutshell.

why is jewell letting him go? ok, he's lazy, but when he gets a run of games going, he will actually show what he can do! i wish jewell gave him a chance! get some younger ones in jewell, getting on my nut!

I'm not usually a negative poster but I can't think of a any period like the last couple of years that has been so unproductive and loss making on the transfer front. We've spent millions on players only to allow several to leave on a free!
Think about Norris and McAuley, good players but £3.5m lost due to them leaving on a free.
Priskin, Leadbitter, Fulop, Healy and drury (although fees for the latter two were low) are all players who have or could potentially leave on a free and have cost near on £5m in fees and none of them really set the world alight!!
So there we have around £8.5m lost in poor transfers/contract handling. It really is starting to look quite bleak on the transfer front, we've lost that ability to bring in good players for low fees (Cresswell excluded) and turn them into good players who would make a profit if sold on.

some very very good points, very worrying when you look at the big picture

Nitroblue, yes we did but that was not my point really but yes that money does balance out the losses however.
Although I know that not every players transfer fee will be turned into a profit or they will become a succesful player but the amount of underperforming/not up to the standard players being brought in is a slight worry and what if Mr Evans decides this is all costing him too much money.....................

Nitro - you forgot Trotter and Rhodes. 'We' made a profit on each of them too. Great bit of business......

Peter morris..good point and well made...as they are both floundering in their current teams! Wonder if we get a sell on for trotter and rhodes? a buy back clause may have been more useful however!

Bury blue- its more than a slight worry i feel....havent felt this unoptomistic since the days of John Duncan......and if our enigma of an owner pulled the plug after having seen his money frittered away on average/ over paid/ underperforming players... how long can he stand by and watch his cash disappearing? The clubs debt is staggering and without him propping us up i really fear that anything Jewell or Keane has done will be insignificant by comparison if ME buggered off!

Nitro- John Duncan, if Jewell is our new John Duncan then promotion is only a season or so away, albeit under a new manager-the next John Lyall!

nitroblue1970 added 15:43 - Nov 24
ah yes! but who is going to be our new John Lyall?......could be a long list of ex hammers bosses...hmm curbishley......grant......zola.....pardew..really dont fancy any of those!..sven is at a loose end i hear!

Curbs a few years back but he's been out of the game so long I doubt he even knows what a football is anymore!!! Zola has great passion for the game but sadly I don't think will ever be a great manager, Pardew, no chance he's doing well at the Toon. And Sven...........
I am still behind Jewell, but here's a dark thought shame we couldn't have been stuffed 7-1 by Colchester..............

How about sending Jewell out on loan. Would get rid of the biggest underachiever.

Taylor 15 put some other good Tamas performances on for Ipswich ,....theres your answer

It will be a sickening if he goes on a free. He's still a young player and an international and PJ has never given him more than half a chance. What's the betting that Nigel Clough gets him playing to his potential and we end up looking like mugs as we did with Jordan Rhodes.

give him some games and play well is what he needs

A terrible shame.
The psychology of getting the best out of players is surely worth a couple of million a season?
PJ's thinking is looking a little lacking in acceptance and flexibility

All you Jewell 'nuts' are getting from him exactly what you deserve - NOTHING - but you still can't see that this is all he is capable of.

Guess the next thing you'll do is question Nigel Clough's judgement of a player - I know who I would rather see here as Manager. Clough or Jewell ? - no brainer if ever there was one.

ITFC under Jewell & Co - is a complete and absolute JOKE - and get's worse by the day.

The Priskin 'knockers' should read comments made by Nigel Clough and Brendan Rogers - far more qualified, knowledgeable, and rational, than the deluded, incorrect c#ap from these self assessed 'expert' supporters.

Only one word describes this Club in it's present state - DIRE - after nearly half a century as a supporter, I would never have believed I would one day have this opinion - It can't be denied 'it's true' and factual.

So PJ'S only problem with Tamas is that he's caught offside to much but the other stikers he doesn't have a problem with being caught offside seems pretty petty to me.
