Jewell: Evans Hugely Supportive
Jewell: Evans Hugely Supportive
Thursday, 1st Dec 2011 16:18

Blues boss Paul Jewell says club owner Marcus Evans was “hugely supportive” of him when he spoke to him last night in the wake of Town’s sixth successive defeat at Burnley on Tuesday. The Liverpudlian says Evans has a long-term plan for the club which includes him remaining as manager.

Jewell said: “When I spoke to Marcus last night, he was hugely supportive of me. I’m a big boy, I know how it works and it’s not so long ago that Steve Bruce [sacked yesterday by Sunderland] was being touted as the next England manager.

“Marcus has told me to just keep going. He’s got long-term plans for the club and he wants me to be the manager.

“Until I’m told any different, nothing will change. I’ll always do my best. I don’t feel as if it’s a hopeless case, I feel that it’s really tough at the moment, really tough, but not much comes easy in life.”

The ex-Wigan and Bradford boss says he was unaware that he had been handed a vote of confidence by the club’s chief executive until earlier today: “I didn’t know that until this morning when Simon Clegg rang me and said he’d come out in support of me.

“I spoke to the owner last night, he’s away on business. I don’t read papers or whatever, win, lose or draw, so I wasn’t aware of the dreaded vote of confidence he’s given me.

“I’m a big boy, I’ve been manager for nearly 550 games, so everything that happens in the game, good, bad or indifferent, I’ve seen it.”

Jewell says he still believes he can turn things around: “I just have to try my best. Everyone at the moment is telling you you’re not very good at your job, but you’ve got to be strong and you’ve got to have belief in your ability and I think I am good at what I do.

“But I’m always learning, I’m always trying to get better. What else can I do? Do you want me to hide under the table, run away or close the door? I don’t want to that. You feel like doing it sometimes but eventually you have to come out and face the music.”

Please don't sack PJ and get Bruce in!

Please don't sack PJ and get Burley in, wnhat has he done since leaving us + a manager returning for a second stint stint never succeeds (cue examples of how this has worked.)

Football is a results business. If you don't get them your out of a job as simple as that. For me it's the manner of how we are losing which is annoying me. We are a walk in the park results prove that except are six game unbeaten run.
The bottom line is ME Has put money into the club of which is appriciated but
looks set to make another poor managerial decision by getting PJ In.

You morons. Where do we go to get a manager prepared to manage under our current circumstances 60m in debt managing on shoestring transfer fees and reliant on loanees.
Bring back Burley that's a laugh he and Sheepshanks led us into administration remember Sereni George et al.
Sack Mr Evans we would have no club if it were not for him.
Ramsey Robson even Burley who relegated us were given time. The Norwich and Southampton's are a rarity.
It will take time to develop a younger squad in the meantime how many of younger staring down the barrel at work after 10 months.
Get real!

Long term plans usually involve building a team for the future, why then are the majority of your signings as close to retirement as Pat Butcher?

Will sacking Jewell really change our fortunes? This time last year we lost 6 in a row with RK in charge, sacked him in Jan, finished below where we all wanted to finish (and probably in the same position as RK would have finished, in reality) and one year later we are in exactly the same position with equally a poor squad but without our young star, Connor Whickham.

Before you attack me, I am as upset & disappointed as anyone on here & came away from the ground, equally as upset as I did when we lost 1-0 to Forest in Jan this year. Its now 6 seasons of dross!

However, before you totally go against Jewell just ponder these thoughts on the unbelievable goings on that are surely beyond Jewells control:

Its not ALL PJ's fault that the players have badly under performed this season. Yes he is paid to organise and motivate but look at the facts:

Jimmy Bullard - 95% of Ipswich fans wanted PJ to sign him - PJ (with the club) pulled out all the stops to sign him, the fans got what they wanted. Jimmy has lost it, hasn't performed.

Michael Chopra - 100% of Ipswich fans wanted PJ to sign him - PJ signed him, something many managers didn't. Its not PJ's fault his personal problems have dipped his form - although he may still prove his worth to the team

Keith Andrews - Great signing until recent dip of form? - again its not the managers fault if is not currently playing well - is it?

JET - On paper a good signing, but never really done it so far - PJ saw a talent like Venger did, its unfortunate but what can PJ do? Maybe give him a longer run in the team in the same position, trouble is he always looks lazy and for a young player has not been match fit - WHY? Manager fault? Fitness coach's fault?

Grant Leadbitter - Unfairly criticised by some sections of the crowd, but he hasn't really played at the level when he first arrived here - agreed, but he does put tackles in unlike some & we lost when he went off on Sat & got over run on Tues without him - maybe time to get off his back, you Leadbitter haters out there??- maybe he is homesick? - Not PJ's fault

Jason Scotland - Looked sharp at the start of season, lost weight, looked good - until recent personal problems (not sure they were documented?) & subsequent dip in form - Not PJ's fault

Priskin - Never looked interested in a Town shirt, only when the TV cameras and Arsenal coming to town - PJ's fault?

Danny Collins - we have all welcomed him here but his form has also dipped in the last 6 games, although not his fault, he has also had personal issues with family over 3 hours away and maybe his mind is not on the job? still our best centre half - Not PJ's fault

I also agree with others PJ has made absolutely bewildering decisions which has made him look like he doesn't know what he is doing. Maybe he doesn't?"

Shane O'Connor is one mistake - Will the club explain what he has done/why he has been overlooked - should have played at Milwall instead of Kennedy!
No width, no pace in many games & leaving Martin on the bench for Burley game is another. Playing Priskin for one game then putting him out on loan, smacks of desperation. Signing Bowyer, Ellington, Ingamarsson, Drury, re-signing Delaney, signing injury prone player like Sonko. Great when fit, but when is he ever fit? Signing Murphy - too injury prone, out of form.

What has happened to Luke Hyam - PUT HIM IN ON SAT - HE CAN TACKLE PJ!

Maybe if PJ does get the sack, then Billy Davies wouldn't be a bad choice? Nottm Forest fans certainly wish they still had him in charge!

I would rather have kean back than martin o'neil the way and reasons he left Villa was a disgrace and he cannot be trusted. If we spend money on some young players who want to play for the badge and if we lose some of the baggage we seem to be carrying and if we buy sharpe from doncaster to partner chopra we will be o.k slip up on this and we are stuffed.

With you as I do not want anyone thinking like a budgie for me !!

Jas please keep your inane rubbish to yourself as most of it is not relevant to our current needs ! What you seem to want is instant success but after having to stabilise the club that is not going to happen . Have none of you had the sense to realise that maybe some of the players ( young , hungry etc ) did not want to come to us ! In that situation we have to get what is available , see how it develops and , as we now see we have to , make changes when the chance comes ( transfer window ) as PJ will now know what needs to change in the way of players !!! I followed through bad times before and will again , will still be there in SBRS cheering them on and griping at mistakes but cheering the better stuff . The good times will be back but sadly not quickly enough for some of you senseless instant win ( get yourselves lottery tickets if you want that ! ) fans with no sense of the real world !!!!

@Pip 50 - I agree with your comment about Evans. People seem to forget that we would have probably folded by now, if it wasn't for his investment. I am not a fan of his 'faceless ownership' but thats how it is and people just have to accept it. And there is a lot of truth in how Sheepers and Burley ran the club once we had got a bit of cash from the Prem. They were both way better when we had no money! We played lovely footy under Burley but I am not sure a return would be the same an or Palymore - he has done nothing at Derby or Palace remember. as for 'Mulligan78' comments about seeing him in the buttermarket, he is always visiting Ipswich.

Well what are the odds at the bookies?
It's time that they turned the other way.
Who is doing the betting?
On the other hand 7 in a row would be a really big earner.
It reminds me rather of poor old Peter Swan
And the Pakistani cricket team.
On the other hand of course, perhaps we really have created a pub team out of a decent, talented squad?

I saw Martin o'neill at Asda creating his own"15 ham and pineapple. On another note, with sonko and stocko back we will probably see a much improved side as long as the midfield isn't soley made up of veterans.

Some fans on here are so negative, Yes we are on a bad run, can't see sacking the manager at this stage will help, who else can we get? who would want the job? The club was left in a real mess when Keane was sacked, He had more money to spend and bought mostly crap and sold Rhodes, Letting Mcauley & Norris contracts run out and go for nothing wasn't good bushiness. There is no quick fix, we need at least a couple of season of rebuilding, yes I was a bit disappointed we some of the summer signing think we went for two many old players but they didn't cost big transfer fees. We were linked we a lot of good players, same old story can't attracted the players or match the transfer fees the likes of West ham can afford. I believe Paul Jewell is looking to get in young players from lower league but it takes team to get the right players, Jet and Cresswell will be good players. Think Paul Jewell should be Judge more on next season, needs more time.

Norwich, Southampton a rarity someone posted. Well what about McKay Cardiff, Sam west ham , Pearson Leicester,Crystal Palace , Birmingham, not forgetting Brendon Swansea, are they all rarities ????
seems as though we might have drawn the short straw somehow along the line !!!!
If we do beat Watford we could climb to 17th. that is if the teams in between do not win !!!. o.k. rant over !!!!!!
I do hope that I am proved wrong with all this and we do get out of dire straits

brittaniaman - the point you make is absolutely right - many post without thought or comprehension on here.
Most, if not all, have had less time at their new Clubs than Jewell and are making huge strides forward.
Excuses, excuses, excuses.

Just read another one holding Keane totally responsible for everything still - words fail me - even if it is just a wind up.

Boys.
You're not getting it.
This run of results, given the excellent players we have and given that PJ is not a total idiot, means that something strange is going on.

My first stop is a betting problem.
It has happened before of course on many occasions.
This is easily checked out against volume betting on ITFC results.

If this is not significant we can move on with a sigh of relief.

No matter who we think is responsible for the current plight, as supporters we need to unite behind the team and manager on Saturday for the 90 minutes and turn PR into a superb atmosphere that encourages the players and management. This however I know will not happen as PR is, and has been for many seasons a joy for visiting teams as the atmosphere is, being polite, awful. For many seasons now the crowd have been constantly on certain players backs, hardly inspires them to play well does it?

Unfortunately Marcus Evan lives up to his initials and is very lackadaisical in ever firing somebody he hires due to 'egg on face syndrom'. As others have mentioned he doesn't have any long term plan apart from the end of the season when 5 or 6 passed it players will be accomodating Ipswich hospital through possible over exhaustion (NOT).
Also a good write up in todays EADT by an Town fan which pin points the teams and managements failings over the last few years, and Roy Keane certainly and rightfully gets a hammering.
I'll give PJ to the new year (that is if we don't keep losing consecutive matches) to get in fresh players and show some of the old knackers yard players how it's done and by then PJ should have more than a diamond formation to his armoury!!
I do think we'll beat Watford on Saturday but plenty of nerves still. 2-1
