Young: Changes Will Be Talked About But It's a Squad Game
Tuesday, 21st Oct 2025 23:27 by Kallum Brisset

Town full-back Ashley Young has dismissed suggestions that seven changes to the Blues’ starting XI was a step too far after the 3-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic at Portman Road.

The Addicks struck three goals, aided by some lacklustre Town defending, early in the second half to condemn Kieran McKenna’s side to their first home defeat of the season.

Despite having 67 per cent possession, 30 shots and 16 corners, the Blues were undone by a lack of cutting edge and defensive errors that leave them 13th in the Championship table.

“When you’ve got a squad like ours, whether you make 11 changes, we know that we’ve got boys that are going out on that pitch that are going to give the same as the rest of the boys in the squad,” Young stressed.

“It’s a squad game, you can’t use the same 11 players throughout the whole season, it’s just not possible. Of course things are going to be talked about with the changes, but we’ve got players who will step up to the plate and will play well.

“It’s competition for places, I see that competition day in, day out on the training pitch so I’ve got faith in every person in the squad.”

Sonny Carey opened the scoring when Dara O’Shea struggled to deal with a long ball forward on 52 minutes before Macaulay Gillesphey doubled Charlton’s advantage just three minutes later.

Less than 10 more minutes had passed by the time that the visitors rounded off the scoring through substitute Miles Leaburn, who had only been on the pitch a matter of minutes when he headed the Addicks into an unassailable lead after Kasey McAteer had had a goal ruled out for the Blues.

“It’s a collective, obviously we’re a team,” Young reflected. “When things don’t go right, it’s a team game.

“We’re all in it together, there’s 11 people out on the pitch that when we concede we all concede together, and when we score we all score together.

“It’s disappointing, we’ll obviously look at them and watch them back and see what caused them. We need to recover after today and get ourselves prepared for Saturday.

“When you see us after the first half, it could be a totally different game if one of them [chances] goes in in the first half but it’s not to be.

“We know what it’s going to be like this season, teams are going to try and nullify us and play five at the back and at times drop all 11 behind the ball. It’s down to us to break them down.

“Of course the fans are frustrated, but there’s a frustrated dressing room there as well. Everybody knows that we could do more. It could be a totally different game if one of them goes in.

“I know we’re going to have the right reaction come Saturday and be able to go out there and put on a performance where I know we can get three points.

“I even think that after tonight, we went 2-0 down and still had chances, we went 3-0 down and still had chances. Until that final whistle goes, if we’re creating chances, I know we’ve got boys throughout the squad that are going to take those chances and score the goals.

“If we’d got the one that was ruled out and it goes to 2-1 and we get ourselves back into the game, but it wasn’t to be. Tonight’s obviously a disappointment, but we’ve got games coming up thick and fast so we’ve got to recover well and be ready for Saturday.”

Asked how tough the result was to take, Young said: “Especially after the first half and the way that we played and controlled the game, of course it’s disappointing to come off like that.

“The way that, when the first goal goes in, I think we need a better reset to not concede any more goals in the manner that we did. Of course it’s disappointing tonight.

“I don’t think it’s surprising. At times it’s happened and we need to find a way of eradicating that. I know the squad here is a fantastic squad that can definitely do that. We just need to find that now.

“It’s one of them where we go a goal down and we want to quickly get the goal back because we know we’re good enough to do that. That’s the time when teams have punished us, and that was the same again tonight.

“It’s mistakes but we’re in it as a team. Everyone’s together and I have no doubt that we’ll dust ourselves down after tonight and go again on Saturday.”

The Blues had previously not lost on home soil but have notably struggled on the road, with all three victories so far this season having come at Portman Road.

Following on from Friday’s defeat at Middlesbrough, Young insisted that the feeling of hurt at losing matches is the same regardless of which venue the results come at.

The 40-year-old said: “There’s disappointment at tonight and disappointment on Friday as well. Whether we’re at home or away, we know what we can give and we know what performance we can put out here.

“The first-half performance, if one of them goes in, I do think it’s a totally different game. Even when we went 2-0 down and we got the goal that was disallowed, I think it’s a totally different game. We were still creating chances even though we were 3-0 down.

“We’ve got to concentrate on what it is we’re doing, keep doing what we’re doing, take the positives out of tonight, we know it’s disappointing. It’s a big game on Saturday.”

Asked on the reaction of manager McKenna, Young said: “He’s been fantastic, he has been all the time. He said about when we go a goal down, it’s just that thing of wanting to go and get ourselves back into the game straight away, especially when we’ve had 30 shots in the game.

“We knew in the first half if one weren’t to go in then just to be patient. They’ve scored the goal and then it’s disappointing to lose another two goals. Of course it’s a disappointing night, we’ve got to recover well and be ready for Saturday.

“You look at the size of the squad and you look at the competition in the squad. That’s why we’re able to make the changes tonight that the manager did. Every man there is competition for places and I'm confident in the squad, definitely.”

Christian Walton stepped in after just 24 minutes following a calf injury to Alex Palmer in the Town goal, and Young says the group have their full trust in Walton, who appears set to continue to deputise with the gloves.

“We’ve got confidence in all the goalkeepers,” the former England international said. “We see them day in, day out in training and they’re hard to beat at times. We have faith in every single goalkeeper. If it’s Walts that’s going to come in then we have every faith in him that he’s going to do well.”

Town have little time to dwell on the disappointment, with West Bromwich Albion the next visitors to Portman Road on Saturday lunchtime.

Young added: “There’s pressure every game. When the club comes out of the Premier League, there’s always going to be pressure surrounding the club.

“I think we’re the team that everybody wants to beat, we’re one of the teams that have come out of the Premier League. You see the way that Charlton were celebrating after the game like they’d won their cup final, which I think for many teams it’s what it’s going to be like.

“It’s down to us to concentrate on what it is we want to do and how we win the games. We know that teams are going to put a lot of men behind the ball, it’s down to us to break them down and get the wins.

“I’ve never seen a table won after 10 games. We’ve got so many games left to play and that’s what we’re going to be focusing on and concentrating on and the next one for us is West Brom this Saturday.

“We’re not looking that far ahead as to looking at the table. If you ask me the same question in May, then I’ll give you an answer.”

Very loyal Mr Young, but KM is arrogant to change so many.
Not a word from the Captain...? Shocking.

Times change but when Ipswich were the best side in Europe the top players all played 60 or 70 games including European games. Also playing for their countries often on pitches that were mud heaps or covered in sand little grass. I'm afraid today players are pampered snow flakes with No balls.

Defence awful conciding as usual there’s no Leadership in the Team at all…

Cressi, you've just made the point I made in a post a little earlier, but mine was a little more polite! Totally agree with everything you say, and I was there to see all that.

And as for players , manager etc, repeatedly coming out with " If this " and " If that ", well as the saying goes, IF my Auntie had balls, she'd be my Uncle!

KM should have started with his strongest first X1. No Egelei, no Hurst, and no Philogene!

Someone said before the game kieran would like genius or an idiot after so many changes sadly that was certainly proven. I know friday he stuck with starting 11 amd we lost but that was against a very good boro team.
Yesterday should have certainly been a win and sadly all changes contributed to the loss.

I’m sorry but this is nonsense, that’s just a modern day footballer, pick your best 11, paid an absolute fortune and can play 1,2 or even 3 games in a week with all the body conditioning they have at their disposal. Hurst would have been my drop last night plus enforced midfield change. Should have kept it as it was. Ridiculous arrogance and we have paid the price against a team that are now 5th which shows the laughable quality of the division. 1st half they couldn’t get out their half or string two passes together !

Mutisiwa was badly missed but unavoidable. Ezon Jack C Akpom Kasey all were decent changes. If anything I felt we had more pace energy and impact than at Boro. Young for Furlong didn’t hurt us.

The only negative was probably JG for Kipre but when DOS Leif also play poorly …..

Hang on Ashley Young.
You worked for a decade under Sir "You start with your best eleven players" so you know that's the formula that works.
I appreciate your loyalty to club and manager right now but I can also imagine you going home and banging your head against a wall because you of all people should know these changes every game do not work.
Would love to be a fly on the wall to hear what he REALLY has to say...

I have too much respect for Ashley young to put down what I actually think of last night’s performance…
I will just say this, teams gel quickly if they play together regularly, that’s what Football is all about it is a TEAM game..
You only need the odd change through injury or suspension. Making seven changes was ludicrous, see the comments on here before the game started and you’ll see supporters saying …what are you doing McKenna?
We only play 46 games in our season and we generally go out of the Cup early, if players are rested they could end up playing only half the seasons matches some only playing 20 or 30 games a year!
I am fed up of the excuses made by McKenna now, he has to Stop this squad rotation system it clearly isn’t working, just pick your best eleven and stick with it!

Seven changes was ridiculous. We hear from KM that it’s a new team and needs time to gel. How can a team gel with so many changes?

KM has completely lost it.

and in the real world seven changes absolutely ridiculous it ends in disaster every fecking time.
Enough of this nonsense of dragging players out for inane interviews pre and post games

Jas0999. Blaming the number of changes is actually ridiculous. No1,was thinking it was a problem at half time, having played well and totally dominated the game. What happened after they scored the 1st goal, was nothing to do with how many changes had been made. Simply down to individual errors. And by players who did play in the previous game ɓtw.

trncbluearmy added 09:53 - Oct 22
Numerous unnecessary changes is plainly ridiculous, it always leads to a poor performance.
KM treated a league game like a cup game and we know how that pans out everytime
Confidence in the pub was high until we saw the team,
that confidence evaporated immediately.
Why?!

BS. It's very much a team game when you've a squad like ours. Delve below our best eleven, and there's very little there. That eleven has won all our games this season. Our world-beating squad is all hype. KM needs to stop drinking his own kool aid and get real.

Sorry Ashley, you may be right about the squad, but the players let us down. Charlton supporters on the train were scathing about your performance so good on you to front up, but some key mistakes made in the summer are coming back to haunt us.

Not accepting the mistake made with the 2 'new' CBs, making one of them Captain when performances did not justify it and nor does O'Shea exhibit ANY Captaincy material, and letting Burg and Woolfy leave when either/both would be starting now and one of them would/should be Captain.

Also (McKenna) identifying our weakness in midfield being power and pace in the Prem and then bringing back Cajuste who is a great player but without those attributes and without an end product. Coming back to Captaincy, we should have gone all out early in the summer and offered to make Hackney captain just as we did with Holland back in the 90s. Age is irrelevant, you are either Captain material or you are not....again sorry O'Shea.

So various problems, and seriously unsettled team, and it is now McKenna's turn to Run Toward Adversity....and I do believe that he will find a way, which will be impressive as it is not clear what that way could/should be at present. WIll he do it in time for us to still be promoted? Jury is out and the bookies are now not convinced, which is just how we like it!

COYB and shout out to those of us that stayed behind to clap the players last night as there were enough that tried their best even if heads dropped second half.

Always impressed by Young interviews or if he is a pundit on sky. Shame he doesn’t want to be a manager. Can’t do any worse than McK atm.

Blues1 if I could vote for you 20 times it would be plus every time. OK we're all disappointed (very) but you are perfectly right. At half time, we had all seen an excellent 45 minutes of domination, with the feeling that it would just take a bit more time before our goals started flying in.
The problem isn't the changes. It's the fact that we gave away a stupid goal and then capitulated. That's an attitude problem, not a team changes one.

I get his point but its not always about the quality of player, its about a settled side who are used to playing together, who have developed partnerships and rhythm. Impossible to do that without a decent run with the same 11.

He does come across well and I really think he should play every game, given the lack of leaders we have.

We need a change of system, we no longer have a decent 10, midfielders who can play in a 2 or centre backs who can defend.

Maybe 3 in the middle? Either that or go to the 5 at the back, wing back / hybrid system we had in league 1.

But something has to change....

Absolutely sick of Hirst too btw.... Can't run, doesn't hold it up, can't finish. Only time he's played well for us is when he has Chappers doing most of the work for him and getting close enough to him to support him.

Chaplin and Morsy were the heartbeat of this team and the foundation of promotion. They were also two of our best players in the premier league... We look lost without them and there was no real need to get rid. It's frustrating.

Need a win and a good performance massively on Saturday. And not just a Philogene / Leif masterclass as that seems to paper over thr cracks a little...

I really really like Azon. Offers so much more then Hirst. Hope he's our number 9 going forward.

Haven't made any comments on here for some time as I think it was getting too personal and childish in some part. However, after spending good money on a season ticket for many years I think this is a good platform to vent my frustrations. Why KM let so many seasoned championship players go, players that gained us promotion before and who would have a far better job than last night. Our Captain letting opposition players beat him in a long ball race, a race I have seen him win before; seemed to me who sits in Churchman's (sorry Alf Ramsey); deliberate. Something is going on in the dressing room that has lost the team spirit. I would have a look at an article written in the October 19th edition of the Evening Star in which there's negative politics going on in team selection, this voiced by Woolfie a central defender that could have done both the jobs of the pair from last night. I have no idea why Greaves was picked last night, he's been awful the whole time he's put the shirt.

In closing, we need changes before we start sinking again and that could mean a change at the top. Someone with more tactical knowledge. I'm afraid KM isn't quite so super after all.

Naivety at best. Squad rotation only works with an expert squad e.g every squad member an experienced international.
It seems that our win ratio after making wholesale changes is zero percent?
Is McK influenced by his personal injury experience playing for Tottenham and consequently is over protective? Given no other professional team seems to stick to this rotation policy e.g. they put out their strongest side expected to compete with their opponents it does appear a strange philosophy Especially when we do not have a squad of equal standards.

Yes, it is a squad game, but the number of changes by McKenna per game suggest he either still doesn't know his best 11..... or hes tactically not very sound, becuase there's far too much chopping and changing with the side. We need a settled TEAM.
