Jewell: I Won't Walk Away From Town
Jewell: I Won't Walk Away From Town
Friday, 2nd Dec 2011 08:35

Town boss Paul Jewell says he has no intention of walking out on the Blues, despite the current run of six successive defeats. The Liverpudlian says the situation is different to his time at Derby County, where he resigned — coincidentally after a 1-0 defeat by Town — when he felt the owners no longer had faith in him.

Jewell dismissed the suggestion that he had thought about making a similar exit from Portman Road: “No, not at all. I can see a situation where I get the sack because we lose the next however many games, but I spoke to the owner [on Wednesday] and he said he has great belief in me as a manager and that I’ve got to have that belief in myself, and I have.

“When I was at Derby I just felt I couldn’t take that any further. There was so much going on off the pitch, but I don’t feel the same here. I feel hugely disappointed with our last six results but I don’t feel as if I can’t turn it around.”

The Blues boss says that while the chief executive at Derby wanted to keep him, the Rams’ owners no longer believed in him: “Adam Pearson was terrific and I asked Adam, if they could afford to sack me, would the owners sack me? He said he wouldn’t but the owners said that if they could have afforded to they would, so that’s why I walked away.

“[I don’t want to be at a club where] people are only keeping you because they can’t afford to get rid of you, I want to be working for Marcus Evans because he’s got belief in me not because can’t afford to sack me, which I’ve got to tell you with my contract is not the case here.

“That’s why I walked away at Derby. Staying around because I’m getting paid well isn’t what I’m about.”

He says he finds life very different at Portman Road: “I just think that off the pitch at Derby there was a lot of politics going on. There’s no politics here, there’s Marcus Evans.

“At Derby we went down with the lowest points total and there was a big black cloud hanging over it. I know it’s a brilliant football club Derby County, similar to here - great tradition, big support - but there was always something going on behind the scenes.

“When I asked the question to Adam, he said he wanted me to stay but the Americans said that if they could afford to make a change they would do. That’s why I went.

“The relationship between the owner and the manager is the most important thing at any club. If the owners haven’t got confidence in you, there’s only one way that’s going to happen and rather than wait around to get the sack, I thought it was best for everyone’s interest that I went.

“At the moment I won’t consider walking away [from Town] because I believe it’s too good an opportunity for me to walk away from.”

Good on you PJ. you getting sacked or walking away would be the worst thing that could happen to this club because we would only get someone in that would have to chop and change the squad all over again then a year down the line the pathetic boo boys would be calling for his head too and we would end up nowhere yet again. You HAVE brought in some quality to this club now let's get the youngsters in, stick with it and it will all come good wether we get relegated & have to bounce back or not.
I could put my house on it that the same boo boys that are now winging will be saying your the best thing since sliced bread if you turn it around and get us promoted next season. Some of the "fans" at this club are very fickle!!!!

Who says faith in you doesnt amount to I dont want to have to pay a ransom to sack you . No politics here thats not right is it there clearly lots of your politics with your likes and dislikes of players try being professional and playing the best side not just those you like might save your job. And of course its too good an opportunity to walk away if you spent as much time on the field training as you do talking you might earn a crust. In context in the real world and current climate you screw up you get a warning continue you end up jobless and thats what you deserve

I am still behind him but don't know why people keep saying he has brought in quality players.
JET, Ellington, Ingarmarrson, Bowyer etc definately not quality.
Without good signings in january we are in trouble.

I totally agree. Get some of that superglue on your office seat and don't budge for the outers. We just can't keep changing our manager. Thanks for giving him your support Marcus as yours is the one that counts. He will turn it around and those fans who generally make up the Jewell out brigade only buy the odd ticket.

I SUPPORT JEWELL. Come on you Blues.

Paul Jewell is a good Manager, Managers don't change overnight. Constantly changing the man in charge does not help anything, we could have done it with Bobby Robson after 18 months but thanks heaven we did not! All of those people who want PJ out are totally wrong, and too impatient. Give the man a 10 year contract!

Bowyer is a good signing if not just about his pitch performances it is the experience he can pass on to the likes of Hyam etc that everyone believes should be thrown in knowing all .How do you think youngsters learn to do their jobs at any workplace just go to the main boss ?
Keep with it Paul you will be judged on a season not a poor patch of games and mass over reaction

Well, he was never going to say that he would walk away from the job - as he'd probably be sacked within 5 mins of saying it!

Those who clamer for change should remember... .."Be careful what you wish for".

Can anyone shut him up? His constant jibber jabber makes you fear for his mental well being.

Well if he won't walk, he'll have to be pushed.

Jewell Out.

Well said Paul.
We would have all signed the players he has signed. PJ has been plagued by circumstances beyond his control (i.e. a ludicrous amount of players with off-field problems). Half the squad have relationship issues/family far away/driving problems/ex-club-finance problems/gambling etc the list goes on and on. Psychological issues have torn apart our side and might well have led to us being so regularly thrashed.
When they get themselves together as a team, we will be going into the promised land next season with Paul Jewell at the helm!
Bring on Norwich in 2 seasons time and watch how WE play!

I wouldn't advocate a change in manager at this stage, I do feel PJ has an awful lot to prove as I'm not convinced by him yet.

What a sad state it is that football appears to have different rules to business - In football apparrently if you're crap at your job you get the sack (if the club can afford the pay off)? In business, if you're crap you get the sack with no 'pay off' to be had.

Come on PJ, you can pull us round. Couple of good results and we can climb up the table again.
Never a dull moment in the Championship!

PJ; Please understand that you 'work' for ITFC. Not Marcus Evans. Your work is for the fans and the club, not the money man.
