Jewell: We Deserved to Win
Jewell: We Deserved to Win
Saturday, 3rd Dec 2011 18:10

Blues boss Paul Jewell felt his side deserved to have beaten bogey side Watford after the Hornets came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory at Portman Road. The loss means Town’s winless streak against the visitors stretches to 14 games and their run of defeats is up to seven.

Jewell said: “We should have had three points. On Tuesday we were abject, but today you could see the determination — we just didn’t have any luck.

“I’m not one for blaming luck, I never have been, but for their first goal [John] Eustace goes to lay it back, it sticks under his foot, the little ricochet goes their way and they go on to get a penalty.

“We should have dealt with their second goal, but we’ve had balls flash across their box, we’ve had shots saved, we’ve done everything but score another goal.

“I’m hugely disappointed to lose seven games in a row, but effort-wise I can’t question the players today.”

Jewell said there were few arguments from his players about the penalty: “There were no complaints from our side.

“I didn’t have a great view from where we were, but Sonko didn’t complain. You’re not the first person to ask me that, someone else said it didn’t look a penalty but the lads didn’t complain.”

Jewell admitted his 21st-placed side are now in a relegation battle: “No doubt about it, we are. After 19 games we’re fourth bottom of the league, so of course we’re in a relegation battle.

“But I just saw that two weeks ago Burnley were fourth bottom, now they’re 10th, so it can change quickly, but it’s seven games on the bounce now and I’m aware of that more than anybody.

“It was a day to stand up and be counted," he added."There was no hiding place for any of us. The only thing that went against us today was the result.

“Maybe I see it wrong, but I think I’m an honest enough manager to know when we’ve been outplayed and been bad and today I think we were dead unlucky.”

Watford manager Sean Dyche was pleased to grab the three points: “With Ipswich’s unfortunate run you don’t want to be the team they turn over because that run will end at some point.

“We knew it would be a tough game and we knew we’d have to go all the way through the game whatever the ref played minutes-wise, and we didn’t.

“It wasn’t always silky from us, it wasn’t always our best performance but the desire of the players and the work ethic of the players was fantastic, I thought.”

camposlocks - I don't rate Jim as a manager. He just hasn't been better because it appears that our board is entirely incompetant at picking and supporting managers properly.

If next week is a 17.20 KO does that mean it's on TV? If so, anything but a 200% performance and a win will put on a huge amount of pressure to sack Jewell if he doesn't go before then. But if he does go, it's going to put even worse pressure in front of the team. It could give the media a potential field day. Time to sort the men from the boys in our side I think, desperate sort out needed in Jan.

Same thing every week...month...year for a long time, manager after manager, player after player, money spent...money spent...money spent, it feels like its deja vu being a town fan.
There seems to be a consitant failure in the club to appoint a solid manager, and to sign hard working and passionate players.
Maybe I'm wrong but Cleggs permanant focus on what we will do in the premier league has ment that he has taken his focus awy from the here and now.
Focus now Mr Evans and Mr Clegg, or you may find yourself in charge of a mediocre league one team, instead of the sleeping giant most of us who comment on these pages still believe it is.

Infiniteregress: Couldn't resist! Sorry! But my point is that 7 consecutive defeats is freefall. How long do we wait? Keane went before this.

I like the comments "if we continue to play like that we'll be fine..." only problem with that statement is that regarding staying up or heading to the play-offs? it amazes me now how people's expectations have now changed, a few months ago we would have been cheesed off losing at home to Watford but now as we have played better in this game than others we're on the up!
If we played ok in this one then we'll be useless at Barnsley and isn't it on SKY? if so then goodnight.
I know this is really a pesimistic on my behalf but come on things have got so bad at this club over the last few years, we need a major overhaul starting with a new manager (one springs to mind) restart fresh before the Jan transfer window, get the youths coming through and some of ME's money into the academy (should have never got rid of Bryan Klug) mixed with some fresh blood and a few who deserve still to be in the starting 11. League 1 will be a disaster IF we go down but I'd rather it be with a different manager than Jewell.

I disagree with PJ. We didn't deserve to win because we failed to take our chances and conceeded two sloppy goals (penalty has a stonewall one). Also, Watford started better, hit the bar and Stockdale pulled off at least three very good stops in the second half.

Having said that, we probably didn't deserve to lose the game and I thought overall we played okay. But let's be blunt we did 'well' against a very very very poor Watford side. This is hardly something to celebrate - particularly as we LOST the game.

The time for excuses has gone. PJ sounded like a beaten man on the radio - and is now clutching to 'we deserved to win' - sorry PJ but we lost and bottom line is we have lost our last SEVEN under you plus many many other thrashings before this disgraceful run.

Furthermore - look at attendnaces - less than 16K ITFC fans there today - nearer the 15.5K mark. I predicted it would go to 12K with PJ in charge - I stand by it. Even season ticket holders have given up. It's time for ME to act. Admit he got it wrong and send PJ on his way. This terrible manager will get us relegated.

JEWELL OUT!

When we were 1-0 up i just knew and could sense them getting one goal and then getting another. Exactly what happened. Barnsley next who won 4-3 so god knows how we will do there.

I didn't go today, quite frankly i've got better things to do now than splash further cash on watching school boy errors and capitulations of the highest order.
If some of these comments are accurate and we really did put in a solid 90 minutes and deserved to win the game then i'm even more worried. This is Watford at home. A team we would have all backed us to beat at the start of the season. For another poor side to take all the points from PR it just further amplifies the decline in pedigree of our club.

Actually for the first time in a while I've come away from the match thinking that we actually played reasonably well. Bowyer is still pointless, Andrews is positionally shocking, but.... better. We could have scored 6 with our chances, and were the better team. Still concerned with bits and pieces. We need energy in the centre of midfield. We need a right back. And with Chopra not firing atm, we need somebody to stick the ball in the back of the net.

Progress... just. Still, the slide needs to be halted, because another loss coupled with a poor performance will mean curtains for Mr Jewell

Silly me I had a couple of quid on us to win 2 - 1 with Andrews as first goal scorer. Odds of 45/1, got the first scorer right and couldn't argue about the penalty. I was right behind it and it was definately a penalty. At that point I expected us to up our game and score again. I would have a smile on my face and £90 in my pocket tonight, but we weren't up to it. We were unlucky but Watford are a poor side who should have been put to the sword. I agree with what jas099 has said we need a change and soon maybe ME would like to go too and take SC with him. As I said yesterday Jewell could be free then for the next series of Strictly, in fact Brucie could take his job I am sure he would be better than Jewell!! Nice to win, to win nice!!!

Thought we were terribly unlucky, every 50/50 went the other way, every bounce went their direction and even the ref represented them more than us. I was happy with the responce from the team and that is a joint effort from them and the manger. Walked away from PR happier and with a little more hope.
Yes we lost, but i love soemone who goes out fighting.
I back the manger and the team at MY club.
Looking forward to the next match.

7 straight loses which could easily have been 8 as we were fortunate to win at home to Portsmouth,an embarrassing thrashing by Peterborough and PJ says 'I'm not one for blaming luck' but...... This kind of run is not about luck its a about poor management and ultimately poor decision making by Clegg and ME in hiring this guy in the first place.
PJ's constant post match cliches are quite frankly dull and uninspiring and i fear for this club i've loved and supported for over 40 years.Sticking with a manager who is clearly out of his depth can only mean relegation and i disagree with all the people who post that we should lower our expectations.ITFC have the support ,ground and infrastructure to be a premiership team simply as.
We also once boasted one of the best academy's in the country who have produced a hots of great players. Going down to League 1 does not always mean we will have success and come straight back up like Norwich. We need to stay in this division while rebuilding but under the manager this seems unlikely.
I hope ME can use his obvious business skills to see where we need to go which clearly means an injection and investment of youth, clearer communication with the fans and someone other than PJ who has vision and passion for the club itself.COYB.

If we had played Carson instead of Martin today we would have won. Martin did have his best game today and he was still pants. He is meant to be dangerous in their box not ours! He was 100% responsible for their 2nd goal. Would some statistician check what % of games we have wOn with Martin in the team, bet it is about 10%

I agree with with Armine6 were were very unlucky today, Watford get soft pen we had good shout for one turned down by a very poor ref.
I thought the team put in the effort today and the crowd were behind them for 90 minutes.
Never heard the moaners on this site booing PJ and the team at all. but do they attend games at Portman Road.
