Clegg Reiterates Backing for Jewell
Clegg Reiterates Backing for Jewell
Wednesday, 4th Jan 2012 20:04

Chief executive Simon Clegg has reiterated that he and owner Marcus Evans continue to back manager Paul Jewell, despite the Blues' continuing poor form. The Town chief also restated that Jewell will be given money to spend during the January transfer window.

Clegg told the BBC: “Paul enjoys the full support of the owner and myself, and that’s why we’re continuing to back him and making money available should he need to bring in additional players.

“Obviously, things are not going well on the pitch at the moment and therefore we have identified some areas of weakness and Paul is looking at those at the moment.”

However, Clegg admitted that eventually his and Evans’s patience will run out, despite Jewell’s appointment a year ago being viewed as one for the long term: “There has to be a tipping point at some point, but we are some distance from that.”

Regarding criticism aimed in his own direction, Clegg says he has no plans to move on: “I’m not walking away from this club, I’m here to fight and to ensure I can do everything that I can to support the manager in terms of achieving the goal.

“My job is to support the manager and as long as I continue to enjoy the support of the owner, I will continue to do the job.”

Clegg says Evans has been far from penny-pinching when it comes to providing Jim Magilton, Roy Keane and now Jewell with money to spend in the transfer market: “When you look at the levels of investment over the last couple of years, they are considerable when compared to other clubs in the Championship.

“No one can question the level of commitment that Marcus Evans has made to this club, we just need to make sure that we start turning things around on the pitch and if we haven’t got the right players, we’ll need to bring them in.”

Elsewhere, the Blues and Huddersfield are claimed to be amongst the clubs interested in transfer-listed Leicester central defender Sean St Ledger.

Jewell made enquiries regarding the 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international last January and again in the summer but with the Foxes signing him from Preston for £1.2 million in July.

St Ledger fell out with manager Nigel Pearson after the Boxing Day game against Town due to his frustration at his lack of opportunities at the King Power Stadium, having made only 10 starts and two sub appearances this season.

It's not necessarily Clegg's fault as such, he's just knows nothing about football.

Don't want St Ledger, likely to kick off if left out, too small, obviously wasn't good enough to save Preston from relegation. No thanks.

jewell needs to go . But why does everyone blame clegg as much. ok he doesnt close all the deals as keane said but surely the rubbish on the pitch is to do with the manager and his coaches and our players . Why is it clegg`s fault almost as much ?????

Clegg is not a football man. He left the British Olympics team before the biggest Olympic event we have ever seen to run a championship team. Strange.

ME saved Ipswich from financial disaster and should be applauded, but he needs to lose his faith in Clegg and spend money on getting David Dein in charge. A man who knows how to run a successful football club without being millions in debt.

Seems a complete no brainier to me

As if anything Clegg thinks counts for anything. He's only a glorified PA.

If you don't sack Jewel this week, a new manager misses the transfer window. we struggle on with Jewel and some panic buys. he gets sacked in May. We are back to zero, maybe in league 1 and will have lost another season for a manager and a new to team to find their feet.

If you gat any business sense, ME Jewel goes now.

PS Why are we the only club that allows this kind of situation to drag on for months. 8 losses out of ten gets you the sack in 99% of the football league.

walberswick - you're right 99% of Clubs would have sacked the Manager by now based on these results - and yet, we still have IDIOTS saying 'give him more time' and slating the likes of us for 'moaning'.

In so many ways we are probably one of the most tolerating set of supporters in the Country - as indeed this current situation proves.

Speaking to a Norwich Supporter today he said you couldn't make up what's happened to this Club - and he's right.

I watched this interview and when asked by the interviewer about his own (Clegg) unpopularity, he said it was the first time he had been made aware of it, or words to that effect; clearly he does not view this website or hear some of the crowd at matches asking for him to go. His unpopularity has been evident since the Keane fiasco. Phil, you must have the ability to highlight all these postings to ME and Clegg; please get them to view it so that they can see the frustration of all the town fans.

Forgot to add that Clegg is as deluded as a modern day politician, oh and as honest.

What an arrogant tw@t!! Get him out while we still have a club to support ... and tell him to take Jewell with him.

Appoint Russell Osman as manager for the rest of this season to see how he does (earning quite a reputation as a coach) and maybe some like Fabian Wilnis if available as his assistant.

Then in the summer get a more experienced man in (Burley? Butcher? maybe) to help mentor Osman and Wilnis. At least we'd have a management team who had pride in the club and would truly want to do their best.

Couldn't be any worse than this pair of clowns!

tractorboy2434 - as sad as it has to be said, and real sad in my opinion - you're right.

I am sure they are so naive, that it's the only action that would change anything.

Only 'contented charlies' left in the stands - to buy the pies.

.......... never mind, I suppose we should be grateful - the turnstiles have been painted, and allegedly look nice. GREAT.

We seem to be sleep walking into this transfer window - we all know what we need - so lets just get on and do it.
Maybe it is not easy to sign players but Ipswich have needed centre backs for the last 11 months so negotiations should be at an advanced stage- out best centre back Sonko this year was signed almost my desperation this summer so surely we would not be making the same mistake twice and leave it so late.

Lets hope so. I think jewell is a top bloke, but his time is up he has obviously lost the squads confidence in him. Just wonder what the secret behind his success at bradford and wigan was??

Jewell's transfer business cannot be criticised (bar just one or two) as someone has somewhere above, his ability to merge all these players into a real consistent team, can.

Whilst Clegg is getting most of the flak here, I think Evans must share in the blame for the shambles we currently find ourselves in. I don't care if he's rich - it's totally unacceptable for someone in such a position of responsibility to lurk in the shadows and refuse to communicate directly with the people who are the lifeblood of the club. This isn't just another business opportunity - it's a football club with it's heart and soul in the community. The Cobbolds may have been a bunch of Tory aristocrats, and I'm a dyed in the wool socialist, but I would prefer them and even Old Etonian Sheepshanks in charge any day of the week.
