Clegg Reiterates Backing for Jewell
Clegg Reiterates Backing for Jewell
Wednesday, 4th Jan 2012 20:04

Chief executive Simon Clegg has reiterated that he and owner Marcus Evans continue to back manager Paul Jewell, despite the Blues' continuing poor form. The Town chief also restated that Jewell will be given money to spend during the January transfer window.

Clegg told the BBC: “Paul enjoys the full support of the owner and myself, and that’s why we’re continuing to back him and making money available should he need to bring in additional players.

“Obviously, things are not going well on the pitch at the moment and therefore we have identified some areas of weakness and Paul is looking at those at the moment.”

However, Clegg admitted that eventually his and Evans’s patience will run out, despite Jewell’s appointment a year ago being viewed as one for the long term: “There has to be a tipping point at some point, but we are some distance from that.”

Regarding criticism aimed in his own direction, Clegg says he has no plans to move on: “I’m not walking away from this club, I’m here to fight and to ensure I can do everything that I can to support the manager in terms of achieving the goal.

“My job is to support the manager and as long as I continue to enjoy the support of the owner, I will continue to do the job.”

Clegg says Evans has been far from penny-pinching when it comes to providing Jim Magilton, Roy Keane and now Jewell with money to spend in the transfer market: “When you look at the levels of investment over the last couple of years, they are considerable when compared to other clubs in the Championship.

“No one can question the level of commitment that Marcus Evans has made to this club, we just need to make sure that we start turning things around on the pitch and if we haven’t got the right players, we’ll need to bring them in.”

Elsewhere, the Blues and Huddersfield are claimed to be amongst the clubs interested in transfer-listed Leicester central defender Sean St Ledger.

Jewell made enquiries regarding the 27-year-old Republic of Ireland international last January and again in the summer but with the Foxes signing him from Preston for £1.2 million in July.

St Ledger fell out with manager Nigel Pearson after the Boxing Day game against Town due to his frustration at his lack of opportunities at the King Power Stadium, having made only 10 starts and two sub appearances this season.

Patronising fool. Clegg has seriously underestimated the feelings of most Ipswich fans.

Look at where we are with all the money spent, going backwards.
So much wasted.
After 12 months and with all the players brought in we still don't have a team that can compete. That is sad. We have no spine in the team and our team is built around , well , no one. No focal point, no pace, no creativity. Surely a half decent manager could do something with the players we have.

Had enough of premier league has beens and cast offs. Our neighbours got it right with the mix of players from Colchester, Brighton, shrewsbury, millwall......

We have players no one else wants. Every one goes on about we must play 4 4 2. We are even easier to beat.

Only time I have ever protested was against john Duncan. Could well be we will have to do the same again. Had we lost to barnsley think he would have gone. The win papered over the damn great ravine within our club.

At this rate Mr clegg ,season ticket sales for next season will be below 10,000. Progress?? You are taking the p.

Jewell's transfer business cannot be criticised? Bowyer over the hill, Chopra mentally unstable, JET lazy, Ellington useless, Drury simply not good enough, Ingamarsson a short midget who doesnt make up for it by reading the game well at all, Cresswell is his only decent permanent signing, he struck lucky with Sonko as he didnt really want him, he stumbled upon him

I wouldn't be surprised if Marcus Evans was actually Delia Smith!! Doing everything she can to get us relegated.

And as for St ledger, O'Dea keeps him out of the Eire squad so take from that what you wil (i.e. he's crap - just ask Preston fans). Do we not have any European scouts, particularly in Holland? The whole thing just beggars belief!

Jewell has been identifying areas that need strengthening since he got here, he's brought in junk that was worse than we started in most cases and short term stopgaps in others. You could fill a whole team with Jewell flops already surely its cheaper for Evans to pay the guy off ..especially considering there will be an absolute biblical exodus of fans if Jewell sinks the club into division 1?

I'm sorry but I honestly cant think of a positive attribute to Jewell's management since he's been here, rubbish tactically, rubbish transfers, spent loads on wages, broken records for the wrong reason.
He's got to go

To me, Jewell isn't the problem. I know I seem to spend my life on here defending him but it's because I believe the problem goes far deeper than Jewell and that sacking him will no absolutely NOTHING. Anyone who thinks this board can sack Jewell and bring in someone better is as deluded, if not more.

Jim was doing fine without Evans. With no money and no pressure of expectation we nearly made the play-offs. With £12 million and promises of Premier League football we were midtable, went a 2 month spell without scoring, lost all confidence and eventually through pressure of the fans, and the weight of disappointment, Jim was forced out.

So what did Evans do? He brought in a big name famous for his managerial brilliance in bringing Sunderland up. He expected instant success. Was there any? No. Keane's signings were useless, he ruined the academy and we found ourselves having spent millions on players who got us further down the league than Jim.

So what did Evans do? HE brought in a manager with a mixed track record but respectable pedigree. He seems to have seldom splashed out the money, despite the promise that the Wickham money would go on new players (where are they? Did it really all just go on wages?) and yet again promised success. Of course Jewell said this would take a long time to steady the ship, but we didn't hear him, we only heard Evan's 'money' and 'ambition'. We saw the big names roll in and we just assumed, Jewell is going to get us up. He was even talking about the play-offs last week!

So what does Evans do? Refuse to show his face? Refuse to interact with the fans? Who knew that a faceless businessman with a director more interested in the up and coming olympics would seem to have invested in a nice amount of cash without actually improving the football? Who knew the fans would get more and more impatient when the stakes were raised? Evans demands and promises success he has no means of fulfilling. He's tried to make the club run before it could walk again all along and who do we blame? The managers? The players? It's them, yes. But is it any co-incidence that our last real promotion attempts/success came under Burley and Royle, with no money, and no Evans.

So, although Jewell may or may not have to go, I don't care about that. As far as I'm concerned, it won't improve the football. In fact, I think I may actually have seen some more exciting football under Jewell than I ever saw under Keane, at least! The players haven't looked motivated for a few seasons now, the managers look exasperated, the fans are still waiting for the promise of success and promotion to look like it's being remotely fulfilled, and where is our owner? Who knows, probably out of the way somewhere counting his money. He doesn't care about football, and neither does Clegg. So, to be honest. Thanks but no thanks, I'd rather be a Portsmouth and have an infrastructure that cares for its fans and its football, despite a real threat of liquidisation and relegation than an expensive corporation which uses big names and big talk to pretend its done anything other than suck the soul out of Portman Road. There's a big problem, but Paul Jewell is the least of it, he turned up far too late in the day to have started it in my book.

I see the Evening star/EADT online has taken away the comment section on the same headline about Clegg. I wonder why??
What on earth is going on with our club?
I would rather have Sheepshanks and Burley back with no money than the current set up. At least us fans would be respected and the football would be good again!

Hang on a minute! BBC News last night said that Ipswich Town are £60Mn in debt! Please let's be careful here. Without Marcus Evans's financial backing behind the club, we would not exist. We would go out of business. And it all stems from the miss-management of 10 years ago when we were relegated from the Premier League having recklessly overspent i.e. Finidi George £20k p.w., that Italian goalie £38K p.w. !!! No other level headed businessman would get involved with a football club, so don't kill the golden goose. Watching on Monday was painful & it hurt, but we are so nearly a team capable of easily holding our own. Something is missing. Maybe errors by senior players lacking confidence. If we do end up in League 1, (& I think the team will come good soon & avoid relegation) then we will need Mr Evans's backing like never before! It's only 8.15 so I haven't been drinking (yet)

Well done Tomisamos - a good appraisal of the real issues. However Jewell is part of the current problem and needs to either sort the team out quick or get out. Give youth a chance PJ

I'm sorry guys, but I think the players are getting away with our situation too lightly. We know they can play well, we've seen it - second half Barnsley ! But all too often, they play like a team who've never met each other before and in a style reminisant of a bad youth team who've yet to use their skills [ no offence to youth teams ]. Paid by performance, this lot would've owed the club over the last few months. It is all so easy to have a pop at everybody other than those who are actually kicking the ball. Think about performances recently, the only team effort was the come back mentioned above, other than that we've seen the odd individual effort. Only my humble opinion, but I think as a team they deserve a collective kick up the arse !

A couple more defeats and it will all kick off.

I suppose that we are stuck with the invisible ME but Clegg will have to go. The question is - will he go of his own accord or will he wait to see how many banners appear at PR with 'Clegg Out'.

What a nightmare.

He must go. He has presided over the worst times in our recent history and the fact that he paid out £250K to a buch of gangsters to bail out Chopra speaks volumes.

Diamond, I agree it's the players not performing but surely it PJ's job to motivate and organise them and this does not happen. I disagree that Evans is the problem as he has been bank rolling us for some time and he stays away and appointed Clegg to be his spokesman. Yes I don't think Clegg is the right man and I wish we had an owner who cared about the club and although I thought PJ was a good appointment at the time and with the signings of Chopra, Cresswell, Bullard and 2 Centre Halfs, I thought we had a good chance this season, I am losing faith rapidly.
Good call on giving Osman a go, he might give some youth a chance rather than the panic buying I suspect we will see over the next three weeks. I know the lkes of Smith and Hyam have looked poor this season but Smith was excellent in the WC and Hyam looked good last season so they clearly have the talent, just need someone to harness it.

said pretty much the same thing about Roy Keane I believe, he was out within a few weeks of this statement. The tipping point will be the 5 game losing streak after the Blackpool game
