O'Connor Set for Return to Ireland
O'Connor Set for Return to Ireland
Tuesday, 17th Jan 2012 13:41

Irish reports are linking Town left-back or left midfielder Shane O’Connor with a move to Shamrock Rovers. Recently on trial at Southend, 21-year-old O’Connor is out of contract at the end of the season with Paul Jewell already confirming that no new terms will be offered.

The Republic of Ireland U21 international O’Connor, who is available on a free transfer, spent time on loan at Port Vale before Christmas but failed to make an appearance for the League Two side.

The ex-Liverpool trainee made 15 starts and seven sub appearances for the Blues after winning himself a deal at Portman Road after asking fellow Corkman Roy Keane for a trial.

Must be off form if Southend didn't want him. Great shame as he always looked a player when he pulled on the Town shirt. Don't throw it all away lad, you can defo make it.

Perhaps he should move to somewhere like Lapland. Always played his best on snow

I am very sad. I really liked Shane and felt sure he would be a regular for years to come - even when Keane departed. How wrong I was. I hope he goes onto better things because he has undobuted talent in my view.

lets be realistic.... went to Liverpool from his Irish team aged 16, let go by liverpool (EPL) at 19 , came to us (Champ) ..... didnt show enough for our management, so he has been to Port Vale (league 2), where he couldnt make the team, has now been on trial at Southend (league 2) where he hasnt got a deal, and it looks like he might go back to Shamrock who are Irish Champions, and where finances are like this.... 'Champions of a domestic league where the highest earner trousers approximately €50,000 per year and the average salary is less than half that' Which if you look at the Wages structure in the English league put them about League 2 / maybe bottom of league 1 wages.

Unfortunate but i think this is his level.......

Why is it bad news ? Liverpool didnt want him, Ipswich didnt want him, Port Vale didnt want him, and Southend didnt want him, Bit of a clue there I think !

I find it strange as he always seemed to do ok on few occasions he played;but four clubs rejecting him must mean something.More interested about whos coming in because unless we get a couple of defenders before the end of window then I fear Div1 beckons.

What can happen to a lad who showed so much when he first joined Town, to not be able to get into a league two side ?

Obviously something very wrong with his attitude and or ability, yes he did have a couple of good games for us but clearly not up tothe standard of league football in England if he's now not made it at 2 League 2 sides.
A younger version of George O'Callaghan maybe, there was another Irish player who had attitude problems.

Another pointer to those criticising Jewell as being unfair to not give him a chance and what a player he is to waste .Like Lavery he cannot get a club in England at league level .
One good game on snow is all i can recall again on TV which is why a lot on here had a raised opinion of him .

The best player currently at the club. Talk about throwing the baby away with the bath-water : in our case we throw the baby away and KEEP the bath-water ...
The best left-sided player since Matt Richards, and he was hounded out of the club by pig-ignorant fans.

Shame but inevitable. Another Shane off to Dublin. The other Shane played in goal for Dublin GAA on Sunday.
