Jewell Delighted With Performance As Well As Win
Jewell Delighted With Performance As Well As Win
Tuesday, 31st Jan 2012 22:50

Town boss Paul Jewell was delighted with his side’s performance as well as their win after West Ham were beaten 5-1 at Portman Road.

Jewell said: “It’s nice to get a result but when you get a performance as well, it’s all the sweeter. They’re a good team, West Ham, they’ll get promoted, I’ve no doubt about that.

“We started the game well, although we rode our luck from one or two set plays. I think it was a victory for hard work and determination. We worked exceptionally hard.

“Our last two games against Blackpool and Leeds, we were the same — we hunted in packs and we set about West Ham. We didn’t want to give them any time on the ball, we closed them down, we harried them from all over the pitch and at times played some good stuff ourselves.”

He says even though Town were well ahead at the end of normal time, there were still a few nerves: “We were 4-1 up and when the four minutes went up the groan around the ground showed you that we’re still not safe, so it was nice for us to get a fifth goal, it was a terrific goal.”

Jewell wouldn’t speak about turning points, but felt it was a result which will do everyone good: “It’s a great tonic for everybody - players, manager, staff, owner, supporters, even the guys who ask the questions every week, it’s a nice feeling.

“But we’ve had a few false dawns before this season and we know we’ve got a really tough game on Saturday but at least we can look forward to that game with a bit more confidence.”

Jewell had praise for midfield duo Andy Drury and Luke Hyam: “Andy’s got quality on the ball and it would have been nice if he could have stuck one away.

“I think he showed a calm head at times and him and Luke have done terrific in there. They’re keeping senior players out of the team because their performances in the last three games.”

He says the inclusion of Michael Chopra was a last minute thing: “It was a late decision. Sometimes as a manager you get a gut feeling, sometimes you get it wrong.

"Chops has been sharp in training for the last couple of days and I made the late decision today to play him. Jason was a bit unlucky, but it was a terrific first goal.”

Hammers boss Sam Allardyce slammed his side's defending: "I was bitterly disappointed. I didn't expect us to put on such a poor performance defensively.

"That's been our ultimate strength this season, especially away from home, but as a defensive unit we just disintegrated.

"Ipswich came out of the blocks quicker than us and exposed the gaping holes we left in our back four. When you do that you get punished.

"We were very, very poor in that department and that's why we lost the game.

"Even when we clawed our way back we didn't have the organisation or communication to make sure we got through to half-time, so I could sort one or two things out.

"Ipswich were great and took full advantage of us not being on song.

"They stuck their chances away when they came their way, so from a football point of view it's been a shock and a really bad day."

Cracking performance last night and believe we will avoid relegation by the skin of our teeth! Still need to sign CB(s). What is really frustrating is why can't the players play like that every week????????????????????????????????

Are we in the pocket of a Asian gambling ring?

PJ out, get Lee Clark in (he won't come, nobody will come to Ipswich now)

Stunning result..well done all.

Now stop fannying about and start giving the likes of Hyam a proper contract..we need to start building around these kids like Burley used to do.

Barrett put in an excellent effort last night, I would like him to stay in goal and feel that he is as good, or even better, that the loan keeper who maybe we should return to his club, the eleven players on the pitch became a team last night and it resulted in a fantastic win.

Funny how you won 5-1 against top of the table and there are still calls for PJ out on here. Right in the sense that we haven't done anything yet to avoid relegation but thrashing a bogey side in a local-ish derby, plus doing the double over them with a newer looking side should give you cause for optimism no?

Tge blackpool, Leeds and West Ham performances have all been encouraging (except for the capitulation at Leeds) and for me that's down to two things: the combination of drury and hyam and the emergence of JET. Hopefully others like Chopra, Smith and Sonko can find form and cressie and Edwards can start to push on without fear!

Only change for Coventry is Carson on the bench for leadbitter for me.

Great result and surprise. Shows what they can do. Liked the group huddle before the start and the effort for 94 minutes.
IMO they all raised their games and although I still feel we need a RB and at least 1 more CB, the lads did well.
JAS0999, surely the players are only identified by PJ and up to Clegg and M.E. to bring them in. Reason they didn't come could well have been our league position along with loyalty to Portsmouth but if the loan market is carefully used to strengthen those weaker areas until the summer then we can survive this year. PJ looks like he will obviously be judged on the whole season now and M.E. will make the decision on his future then. A run of performances like last night will see us move up the table into a safer mid table position.

Well done Town.

Jas, your most constructive post for a while, i applaud you.... credit where credits due.

I agree, disappointed with the lack of ins, but, we do have a good enough squad to get out of the currrent position as last night showed. As much as im disaapointed withthe lack of ins, gven that i do think we'll climb to mid table by the end of the season, id much rather then have a good solid rebuilding exercise in the closed season, something ME, Clegg & PJ know has to happen, i think the players we get then will want the shirt, ala cressy, closed season they can see the progress weve made, rather than paying over the odds for people in the window through blind panic, lets see if we get a couple of solid loans in to back up the current squad now.......

jas, how is beating the league leaders 5-1 not an excellent result?

Great all round performance. The "youngsters" have played well for the last few games (Hyam, Drury, Martin have stood out recently) but last night the more senior players actually performed well too! (Chops, Sonko and Murphy who probably had his best game since being here) Only slight nerves came from Carlos being far too casual at the back at times but if we can keep this bunch together for a run of games we should be good enough to pick up the points required to finish safely away from the bottom three.

tomisamos - in fairness to Jas, and i have knocked him recently, he did actually say it was a good, no excellent result.... not that it wasnt an excellent result. I for one am still buzzing, after this, the Barnsley game and of course the Peteborough nightmare which i witnessed from the stands, you cant say it is ever dull being a town fan! Shame of it is we have play better than that and lost this season due to the poor defending, i am agree with a majority on here who say we need to bring in at least on CB, probably more. I wont knock Edwards, i think there are far worse RB in the division but i would so love to see his creativty and ability to beat a player further up the pitch where it belongs.

Don't know if its a reflection on how bad we've been in the past but i've really enjoyed the last few games. What a breath of fresh air the youngsters bring... really want to play for the club and have transformed our midfield. Must keep Leadboots out of the team IMO if we are to maintain this upward trend.

Thought Lee Martin was outstanding last night, along with Hyam and Drury. Jewel got things right by leaving well alone until Chops tired towards the end. Now optimistic about a mid table finish!!

Superb result against an experienced and physical side.
Drury, Hyam and Martin never gave the Hammers midfield a minute on the ball and showed real quality while JET showed us why he is such a great prospect and a potential match winner. When you think we have Jimmy (who i still think has a big part to play this season.)Carson,Bowyer and new signing Stevenson all competing for places the midfield is beginning to look very solid.
However despite the euphoria of the evening and lets face it,it should have been 6 -1 as Martin was carved down in their box on 90 minutes, i still have concerns about the defence. Edwards has the tricks and a good touch but not a right back and the defensive partnership still looks fragile and needs addressing. You couldn't fault the effort of Smith and Sonko but a few errors early on in the 2nd half nearly had us biting our nails again. It could have been a different game at 3-2 and they did have chances.
It was great to see the absolute joy and probably relief on the faces of the players as they came off the pitch and we all just hope the confidence from this match will carry on to Saturday.
Its very disappointing we haven't brought anyone in during the transfer window and yes some more youth and hunger is the way forward long term but i hope we can bring in at least one experienced CB and a right back in on loan in the next week to steady the back line. Its an area of the team that's still needs addressing to ensure we push on to mid table.

The positives are;
1) the result; I could have predicted 5-1, but to West Ham not us,
2) the performance; I wasn't there, but it sounds wonderful,
3) done by a young side, many brought up through the ranks.
Negatives
1) still couldn't keep a clean sheet,
2) Billblue one swallow does NOT make a summer and if we go down this will be forgotten. A good run is needed.
3) no Carson, so I fear that the Ipswich youngsters message is still fully to sink in,
Mr Jewell; please do not go out and get some grotty loan signings for the sake of it. Let's work with what we've got, but a new defence coach would be worth his weight in gold.
