Ward in Town Talks
Ward in Town Talks
Thursday, 8th Mar 2012 23:49

Portsmouth defender or midfielder Joel Ward is understood to have been at Town earlier this week to hold talks over a move to the Blues. The 22-year-old, who has also been linked with Watford, was one of the three Portsmouth players Town targeted in January, when a fee was agreed for Ward and keeper Stephen Henderson, the deals breaking down over personal terms.

Now, with Pompey continuing to offload players to ease their financial situation, the move seems to be back on with Portsmouth’s administrator believed to have put a deadline of the weekend on the switch.

Although the transfer window is closed, Town can sign players on loan initially with previously agreed permanent deals being formalised in the summer. Peterborough recently recruited Crawley striker Tyrone Barnett on that basis.

Keeper Henderson is also reportedly still on the Blues’ radar, while central defender Jason Pearce, the third January target, may also continue to be in Paul Jewell’s thoughts.

Speaking to TWTD last week, chief executive Simon Clegg confirmed that the Blues' pursuit of some or all of the Pompey trio was a “live issue”.

Good news. It will give him time to bed in and hit the ground running next season. Pearce as well would be great, not fussed about Henderson - there are better keepers around.

Great news, looks like a very good player!
I know ive reacted badly to the fact that he turned us down in january. But the fact that he wants to help his poor club out must be a good sign, looks like a team-player who wont leave the sinking ship, players like that are what we need. COYB

Good signing should he actually be committed to the team rather than just a team to pay his wages til may. with Carlos being offered a new deal whos going to be first choice right back should they both sign?

How awful must it be to be a Portsmouth fan right now. You'd go round all day just gutted.

@ sospiri

everyone should remember your words when clegg fails to sign a player, he is trying to avoid us being in the same position.

So where does he usually play? Is he a midfielder that can play in defense, or a defender that could play in midfield? Is he right or left footed?

BlueFinn added 07:01 - Mar 9
Your answers are here. He's played centreback too and midfield.

With Pompey having had so thin squad they need to use their players wherever needed.

we played like this at start of season we would not have these problems we are having singing people whose club are going under, unfortunately we did and now if we get ward n pearce, next year looks very rosy. Murphy has to be signed up has to be one of my fave player to put on town shirt this year, and martin very impressive since free role. good keeper in ALB unfortunate in way he being treated but not henderson i dont rate him and he obviously didnt wanna come here last time. take leaf out of doncasters book they get people wanting to put there shirt on very easily piquienne last week. from pompey id like to see WADR, PEARCE, NORRIS, HALFORD, OR, KITSON find a different keeper or jamie ashdown to piss henderson off he dont wanna play for club fukk him

Let's hope we can get him this time on sensible wages, as he could be another important building block for our future.

I looked up Ipswich on there. The valuations are crazy: Richard Wright £250K, Jamie Peters £450K, Grant Leadbitter £1.5M, Nathan Ellington £875K...but then Aaron Cresswell only £450K and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas only £1.1M. :-D

Agree with Blue Fred and Sindre. A few people criticised the Pompey players. Whilst the thought of them allegedly holding out for excessive wages was unpalatable in january, this may have been because they were desparate not to leave. This could be the sign of committed players, who may be just the type we need, should the reality of Pompey's unfortunate situation now be sinking in, and their wage demands are more realistic. We'll see. As Blue Fred says, if we get him, great. if not, all the best. Cautiously agree about Murphy - he certainly loves us and has done well. Just conscious of his age and possible cost in wages/transfer fees.

I hope Jewell has scouted this player properly. Pompey fans do not rate him very highly. This comment is typical... "Ward really isn't very good (having the ability to run up and down will never compensate for having such a poor first touch). He gives everything but I shall not be sad to see him go." I have seen him play twice, and have not been particularly impressed. I suppose it depends on whether he is cheap, and is happy to be a squad player.

@BillBlue and Pessimistic - he's not got a bad disciplinary record at all, check the stats again. He's got 5 yellows, and no reds this season (from 34 games).

You were looking at the number of times he's been subbed on (6) and off (2).

Ward and Pearce yes. As for Henderson, doesn't look like an improvement on what we already have. Much prefer Guzan

Ward and Pearce yes! Henderson no thanks! Would rather we tried for Guzan.
