McCarthy: Play-Offs Still Possible
McCarthy: Play-Offs Still Possible
Saturday, 10th Mar 2012 07:22

On-loan goalkeeper Alex McCarthy is refusing to rule out in-form Ipswich’s chances of reaching the play-offs.

Town are currently 11 points adrift of sixth-placed Birmingham, who have played one game less, but McCarthy said: “You never know what might happen.

“It is often said that in this league any team can beat any of the others and we have shown that by doing the double over West Ham and taking a point from Southampton the other night.

“Sometimes it is a question of which team turns up. We are a different team to what we were a few weeks ago. It took longer than we thought it would to gel together and pick up points but we have settled into a good rhythm recently.”

Town have banked 16 points from their last seven outings and, realistically, would need to at least maintain a similar ratio over their remaining 12 to have any chance of breaking the 70-point barrier and possibly gatecrashing the top six come the end of the campaign.

McCarthy, who has made five first team appearances since arriving from Reading in January, added: “If we can keep picking up three points at home and continue to collect a few from our away games we could have a sniff of the play-offs.”

But even if Town miss out, a top six finish is the very least that McCarthy’s parent club — currently the most consistent in the Championship after a run of seven straight victories — look capable of achieving.

The England U21 international keeper, whose loan is up on April 11th, added: “They are flying at the moment. I wouldn’t even rule them out when it comes to automatic promotion or even finishing the season as champions.

“Obviously we did them a big favour with our result at Southampton the other night and I had a text message from the gaffer [Brian McDermott] to thank me for that.”

If we're not in the hunt against reading i suspect he'll stay. If we are they'll take him back!

Mathmatically possible, yes it is, but not very probable is it.. i would be happy to see continued improvement in the the squad, (additions to) and performances on the pitch. lets face it, if by some stroke of luck we made the play-offs and got promoted, what do you think would happen? the thrashings we have experienced this season would undoubtedly occur next season, but with more regularity. this team has only just started to gel and perform at this level, would be to big a ask of this team to move up a level, without wholesale team changes, relegation would be a certainty. I want to enjoy it when we get there. lets enjoy watching the steady progress and take this league by storm next season...coyb

I used to think that achieving promotion this season, almost by accident, with a strong drive to make the play-offs wouldn't be a good thing as we're not really ready for sustained survival (and success) at the higher level. However, I'm coming round to the thought that (in the unlikely event of it happening) there would be advantages.

Our upward momentum would be huge in terms of morale, if nothing else. And, through careful planning, we could aim to follow the Blackpool model. Unlikely Premiership contenders, they were, nevertheless, only just relegated - literally a goal or two (in a couple of different games) from safety. They didn't overspend while up and are now making another strong challenge, with the helpful fuel of parachute payments.

There is something to be said for that, as long as we don't go (financially) mad like the last time.

Guthrum... football as with most sports is about confidence and this is all hypothetical ,but how good would it be for team moral and confidence to get a severe hiding each week. Could really do this team harm to go up now,(aint happening of course). Back in January we were a team looking at a relegation battle,(and it was where we belonged to be) do you really think that 6 weeks or so later we are a team that would be able to make a fight of it in the prem? We need some additions to playing staff to make us a good championship outfit, would need several more for the prem.

Full praise to the team and management for the improvements over recent weeks,
but lets remain sensible, shall we..coyb
